Body PlanesImaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections.
Frontal /Coronal plane divides body into front (ventral) and back (dorsal)
Transverse Plane divides body into top and bottom (superior and inferior)
Sagittal Plane divides the body into right and left sides (closest to midline called median and further away called lateral)
Body cavities
Direction• Medial Toward the mid-line
of the body • Lateral Away from the mid-
line of the body
Proximal - close to origin of the body part or point of attachment of limb to the body trunk
Distal - Away from origin of the body part or point of attachment of limb to the body
Cranial Head Caudal near the sacral
region or tail end
Dorsal/ Posterior back of body
Ventral Anterior front of body
Inferior Lower or below transverse plane
Superior Upper or above transverse plane
