    NYSOEA Mission and Goals

    Mission

    Goals

    NYSOEA is a professional organization which promotes

    interdisciplinary lifelong learning in, for, and about the outdoors andinspires an appreciation of the environment for all people.

    To help classroom teachers and youth leaders use the outdoors toenrich their curricula and programs.

    To assist our members in expanding their knowledge and skills inusing the environment for responsible educational purposes.

    To promote public awareness of the value of outdoor andenvironmental education and interpretation.

    To foster a lifelong appreciation and sense of stewardship for theenvironment.

    To act as a unified voice supporting the fields of environmentaleducation, outdoor education, interpretation, and outdoor recreation.

    Outdoor Education is education in, for and about the outdoors having universal

    values that : Play a pivotal role in reversing what Louv calls "nature deficit disorder" Connect humans to their surroundings and the other life forms with which we

    share this planet.

    Offer opportunities to integrate learning throughout all disciplines. Support the development of a values system. Teach appreciation, respect and reverence for the natural world, leading to

    global stewardship.

    Offer opportunities for successful learning for individuals whose strengths lie inany of the multiple intelligences.

    Professionals in outdoor education :

    Are collegial. Mentor each other especially those starting out in the field. Make every effort to keep abreast of and consciously observe best practices.

    Consistently share, build and renew skills to advance knowledge in the field

    As a professional organization dedicated to outdoor education NYSOEA

    Administrative Goal

    To have a knowledgeableand effective working

    board.

    To have smoothtransition between

    succession of leadership.

    To have rich and frequentinteraction and

    collaboration among the

    board members.

    Provide board members with an updatedboard manual and periodically reiterate

    the election processes, eligibility and

    privileges and responsibilities.

    Recruit board advisors and replace ones

    that are no longer interested in servingin the Advisory Group.

    Provide training and mentorship to newboard members and have them serve in

    the elect position. In absence of a

    predecessor, assign a current board

    member as a mentor.

    Manage the logistics for securing theadministrative supplies/resources and

    staff. Propose a calendar for regular

    board meetings and arrange for at least

    3 in person meetings.

    Committee structure andpolicies are reinforced

    and followed as defined in

    the by-laws.

    Board has access to an

    outside perspective andexperience from advisors.

    New board members feelequipped to serve

    effectively in the executive

    positions.

    There is a centrallylocated office with

    manager/ clerical support.

    Members have enough

    Prepare and submit the annual budgetto the board for approval.

    Periodically review expense and seekfinancial advice to increase return on

    investment.

    Establish a Budget committee whosemembers must include the Treasurer,the President and VP Admin.

    Establish a Financial committee whosemembers must include the Treasurer,

    the President along with ad hoc

    members as needed.

    Make a fund raising pitch or invitemembership subscriptions at all events.

    Attract sponsors for annual conference,trainings and regional events.

    Tap all avenues for fund developmentincluding merchandising, advertising,

    auctions and grant applications.

    Demonstrated improvement in fundand resource utilization.

    Strict adherence to accountingpractices and financial regulations.

    Remain fiscally transparent to our

    members and supporters.

    Development staff meets thefundraising targets to support projects

    Backgroundofthisdocument.

    In 2005, the NYSOEA Board of Directors started a process of creating a living

    document which would guide the planning for the organization for the upcoming 5 10 years. It was conceived to be a fluid and flexible document, which would serve

    as the groundwork for future planning strategies.

    In 2010, the NYSOEA visioning committee was formed to review, update and

    supplement the original work of the board of directors. This board goal document is

    intended to carry the organization into 2015

    Definitionsofterms used inthisdocument

    Outdoor

    Education

    Outdoor education is experiential, interdisciplinary learning in, for, through or

    about natural environments. In sub definitions, outdoor education is linked with,

    but not limited to - environmental education, adventure education, experiential

    education, wilderness education, recreational experiences, and service learning.

    Cultivation is the process for keeping individuals connected and educated about

    the organizations activities and importance in order to bring them closer and

    encourage personal ownership and responsibility for the organizations

    success. Cultivation also includes praise and appropriate recognition for all

    involvement with the organization.
