LEARNING OASIS GIVES BACK TO FSPS TEACHERS We are so fortunate to have such incredible partners in the Fort Smith community. FAIRVIEWFUNWITHSANTATHANKSTOGRANTFROMFSPSFOUNDATIONFairviewElementaryteacherMaryMcCainwasabletotake70kindergartnerstoridethePolarExpress!ThiswasmadepossiblebecauseofagrantfromtheFSPSFoundation!Ms.McCainsaidtheallofthestudentsandtheparentsthatattendedhadanincredibletime!HugethankstotheFSPSFoundationforallthattheydoforourdistrict!BACKGROUNDCHECKSFORCLASSIFIEDPERSONNELAsrequiredbyAct1040of2019,theFortSmithPublicSchoolswillbeginconducting backgroundchecksonallclassifiedemployeesinJanuary2020.Employeeswillreceivea separateemailaccordingtothetimelinelistedbelowcontainingrequireddocumentsandspecificdetailsaboutschedulinganappointment.Forthepurposeofthislegislation a“classifiedemployee”isanyonewhoholdsapositionthatdoesnotrequirea teachinglicense.AccordingtoAct1040of2019,backgroundcheckswillberepeatedontheseindividualseveryfiveyearsandwillconsistofthefollowing: 1.TheArkansasStatePolicecriminalrecordscheck 2.TheFederalBureauofInvestigationcriminalrecordscheck 3.TheChildMaltreatmentCentralRegistrycheck Wewillbeginbyconductingbackgroundchecksonthoseemployeeswhowerehiredpriorto2009andwillcontinueuntilallclassifiedemployeeshaveabackgroundcheckcompletedwithinthelastfiveyears. TheHumanResourcesDepartmentworkedwithLarryBandy,PurchasingSupervisor,tosubmitabidproposaltoanyauthorizedvendors.TheonlyvendorwhorespondedwasArkansasLiveScan.ARKANSASAPCOMPUTERSCIENCEINCENTIVEMONEY(SOUTHSIDEHIGHSCHOOL) TheArkansasDepartmentofEducationhasawarded$17,150.00toSouthsideHighSchoolforoutstandingperformanceinAdvancedPlacementComputerScience.NineteenSouthsidestudentswillreceiveanincentivecheck.Thechecksrangeinamountsfrom$250to$1000.SouthsideHighSchoolwillreceive$3,150foractivitiesthatpromotecomputerscienceeducation.Ourdistrictwasoneofthetoptendistrictsinthestate!

FortSmithPublicSchoolsWeeklyBoardReport Page3of6WeekofDecember13,2019 BALLMANRECEIVESANARKANSASDEPARTMENTOFEDUCATIONCOMPUTERSCIENCEGRANT BallmanElementaryreceivedan$11,874.88computersciencegrantfromtheArkansasDepartmentofEducation.The17winnerswereselectedfromatotalof38applicantsbasedonproposalsthatoutlinedeffortstoexpandtheircomputerscienceprogramandimplementinnovativebestpractices.Therecipientswillusethegrantfundstocovertheexpensesassociatedwithpurchasingcurriculum,softwarelicenses,andnon-fundamentalequipment,aswellasprovideprofessionaldevelopmentorstudentincentives,asoutlinedintheirsubmittedbudgets.“Thesedeservingwinnersfromaroundthestatesubmittedstrongproposalsthatwilltransformtheircomputerscienceeducationprograms,”ADESecretaryJohnnyKeysaid.“Asaresultoftheirefforts,Arkansas’studentswillhavetheopportunitytoengageandlearninrobustcomputerscienceclasses.IamexcitedaboutthegrowthoftheComputerScienceInitiativeandlookforwardtoseeinggreatthingsfromthesewinnersandtheirstudents.”FIRSTELEMENTARYLEGOROBOTICSCOMPETITION FortSmithPublicSchoolshas12elementaryschoolsthatwillbecompetinginthe2019-20FirstLEGOArkansasLeagueroboticscompetitiononSaturday,December14inSpringdale. ThecompetingelementaryteamsareBallman,Barling,Beard,Cook,EuperLane,Fairview,Orr,Pike,Spradling,Sutton,TillesandTrusty.EachelementaryteamwillbecompetingintheSpringdaleSouthQualifierevent.TheeventwillbehostedbytheSpringdaleSchoolofInnovationat2667HyltonRoadonSaturday.FortSmithstudentswillcompeteagainststudentsfromHackett,Clarksville,Fayetteville,andSpringdale. Duringthetournament,eachteamwillparticipateinonerobotgamepracticematch,threeofficialrobotperformancerounds(bestscorecounts),ajudginginterviewthatincludestheteamjourney,theinnovationproject,andtherobotdesignprocess,andcorevaluesjudgingintheteampitarea.Judgingwilltakeplaceinthemorning.Therobotgamepracticesessionandofficialround1willtakeplaceinthemorning;robotperformancerounds2and3willtakeplaceintheafternoon.Weareexcitedforourstudentstocompete! MembersoftheFortSmithPublicSchoolsPoliceattendedthefuneralofFayettevillePoliceOfficerStephenCarr.LawEnforcementOfficersfromacrossthenationattendedthefuneral.CitizensofFayettevillelinedtheprocessionroutetopaytheirrespects.OurprayersgoouttothefamilyofOfficerCarrandtothemembersoftheFayettevillePoliceDepartment. FortSmithPublicSchoolsPoliceWeeklyActivityFSPSOfficersrespondedto90callsforservice,visitedschoolsatotalof35times,counseled102studentsandcontacted72parentsorguardians.FSPSPoliceatTournamentofChampionsFortSmithPublicSchoolsPoliceareprovidingsecurityandprotectionthisweekendattheTournamentofChampionsBasketballClassictakingplaceatNorthsideHighSchool.
