June 13, 2015 Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors and Advisory Board of The Musicians at Play Foundation, I am honored to welcome you to The Vintage Masters of Swing – our first live performance event. The Foundation was created to “bring live music to the community and the community to live music” and tonight's concert is but the first of many opportunities for us to do just that.

Almost a century ago, the invention of radio and records began to spread music-- mostly American popular music--all over the world. Our emotions and memories were soon affected by songs we loved, by favorite big bands and film scores. Through wars and depressions, the power and joy of music was always there to comfort and entertain us. Tonight we celebrate six national treasures who helped to create that music.

These legendary composers – Van Alexander, Patrick Williams, Ralph Carmichael, Bill Holman, Sammy Nestico and Richard Sherman--will conduct their own great arrangements. Our immense gratitude to Tim Simonec for gathering a truly All Star Big Band for this evening, and to the one and only Leonard Maltin for serving as our Master of Ceremonies. To Tierney Sutton, Sue Raney and Janene Lovullo – thank you for lending your beautiful vocal talents. And heartfelt thanks to our growing list of sponsors, without whose help this concert would not have been possible.

The Musicians at Play Foundation will continue to present concerts throughout the year--big band, jazz, chamber music and special events--and we hope you will show your support by becoming a member of our organization. Our mission is clear: to keep live music playing throughout our city and across the country. Educational outreach programs will expand cultural awareness and encourage future generations of young musicians and music lovers.

I grew up in a family of musicians and married my wonderful musician-husband Don. I know that it takes the support of a dedicated community to keep music alive. I hope you share my passion for Musicians at Play. And many thanks to all of you for sharing your evening with us tonight. April Williams President and Artistic Director

  • Dear Friends,

This Foundation was created to “bring live music to the community and the community to live music” and this event is but another of many opportunities for us to do just that.

The Musicians at Play Foundation, a nonprofit organization that connects artists to audiences, educates, presents, preserves, documents and celebrates the music of Los Angeles, is proud to present our special guests Seth MacFarlane and the Ron Jones Jazz Influence Orchestra kicking off the MAP 2015-2016 season at the beautiful Moss Theater in Santa Monica.

With a focus on big bands, jazz, chamber music and live music-to-film events, the Musicians at Play Foundation will be presenting concerts and educational outreach programs throughout the year in order to expand cultural awareness and foster new generations of musicians and music lovers. With my personal thanks,

April Williams President and Artistic Director

Congratulations Musicians at Play Foundation…It has been my honor to have worked with my brilliant colleagues in Los Angeles, and I always appreciate the invaluable contribution they’ve made to my scores and to those of other composers. LA musicians are a pool of freelancers who constantly come together to form a fabulous orchestra. We don’t celebrate this enough, and we absolutely need to be more vocal about it.

    - John Williams, Composer

  • Dear Music Lovers,

There is little doubt as to what effect music has on our everyday lives. It entertains, motivates, heals, alters our moods, and heightens our emotions. We are fortunate, in this age of technology, that we literally have music at our fingertips 24 hours a day. Technology has its limits, however, for no matter how great the sound system, there is nothing like the spontaneity, excitement and power of hearing highly trained musicians perform live.

Last spring I was given the wonderful opportunity to become managing director of Musicians At Play and work with its talented and inspirational founder, April Williams. It is our mission to give to the community the gift of music by helping to produce live concerts, turn young people on to a variety of musical styles, provide training and guidance for upcoming artists, develop musical talent in our youth, and to preserve and exhibit the incredible musical genres present in Los Angeles.

If you are interested in learning more about the Musicians at Play Foundation and invitation to serve on the Board of Directors, contact us at [email protected]. I hope that you thoroughly enjoy this evening’s MAP concert and that you join with us in the future to spread the magic of live music.

    Cynthia Pease

  • Seth MacFarlane is a true renaissance man possessing talents that encompass every aspect of the entertainment industry. He has created some of the most popular content on television and film today while also expanding his career in the worlds of music, literature and philanthropy.

At 25, MacFarlane became the youngest showrunner in television history when his animated series FAMILY GUY aired on FOX. Now in its 13th season, FAMILY GUY has garnered MacFarlane Emmy Awards for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance and Outstanding Music and Lyrics. In addition to FAMILY GUY, MacFarlane serves as co-creator, executive producer and voice actor on AMERICAN DAD! He also executive produced the 21st century version of COSMOS: A SPACE TIME ODYSSEY that premiered on ten US networks, simultaneously across FOX and National Geographic platforms, making it the largest television premiere event of all time. The series has gone on to receive a Peabody Award, 2 Critics Choice Television Awards and nominations for a Television Critics Association Award and 13 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. Up next for MacFarlane is Starz’ new comedy, BLUNT TALK, which he executive produces. The series starring Patrick Stewart and written by Jonathan Ames will begin airing on August 22nd. The show has already been greenlit for a second season.

MacFarlane made his feature film directorial debut in 2012 with the highest-grossing original R-rated film of all time, TED. This buddy comedy starred Mark Wahlberg and MacFarlane as the voice of the lovable foul-mouthed teddy bear. The film made over $545 million worldwide and was also co-written and produced by MacFarlane. Fresh off the success of TED, MacFarlane hosted the 85th Academy Awards in 2013 and was also nominated for the film that same year. He was nominated for ‘Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song’ for ‘Everybody Needs a Best Friend.’ The sequel is currently in post-production and is set for release on June 26, 2015. In May 2014, Universal released MacFarlane’s western-comedy A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST. The film, which MacFarlane wrote, produced, directed and starred in, featured an ensemble cast that included Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried and Neil Patrick Harris, among others.

MacFarlane’s debut album “Music is Better Than Words,” debuted at #1 on the iTunes jazz charts in 2011 and went on to receive two Grammy nominations, including ‘Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.’ Released by Universal Republic, the album celebrates the classic, sophisticated sound of the lush swing orchestras of the ‘40s and ‘50s with MacFarlane singing some of the hidden gems of that era. Norah Jones and Sara Bareilles collaborated with MacFarlane on two duets on the album. In 2014, MacFarlane released his first-ever Christmas album, “Holiday for Swing,” that debuted at #1 on the iTunes holiday album charts. The album features timeless holiday songs accompanied by a 52-piece orchestra.

In August of 2014, MacFarlane performed with the world-renowned John Williams Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, lending his baritone voice to renditions of “Luck Be a Lady’ and “You’re Sensational” to rave reviews. MacFarlane also recently performed sold out shows with the San Francisco Symphony on New Year’s Eve and the National Symphony Orchestra on Valentine’s Day.

  • For over 37 years, Ron Jones has dedicated himself to the craft of composing. Most of his creative work has involved scoring music for TV and Film projects, produced by both major Hollywood studios and independent productions companies. Ron scored hundreds of episodes of Hanna-Barbera’s popular animated series. Ron was also called on to arrange and eventually compose many of the main title themes, such as the Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, The Snorks and many more.

Ron was asked to score the animated series, Duck Tales for Disney. Duck Tales has been one of the most successful animated series of all time and still plays to a large worldwide audience. After Duck Tales, Ron worked on the first four seasons of Paramount’s smash hit series, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Ron also worked with one of the great young talents, Seth MacFarlane. Seth took a chance and developed a new series for Fox, called Family Guy. Ron scored the pilot and the series has gone on to become a worldwide hit. Ron has been pushed to create nearly every possible musical style and genre of scoring during his years working on Family Guy - from Broadway parodies, jazz, pop, contemporary grooves and songs to serious orchestral underscore.

Ron has expanded his musical exploration by forming the Influence Jazz Orchestra. The group is made up of the most elite session and jazz players in Los Angeles. This ensemble was formed out of a desire to share with live audiences the incredible and amazing studio musicians Ron calls to record his TV scores. The band performs new works by Ron, as well as the best charts written for Jazz Ensemble. Many performances feature Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy singing his favorite classic Sinatra songs as arranged by Nelson Riddle, Billy May and more. Influence is involved in concerts of film and TV music as well as cutting edge Jazz.

Ron owes everything to his wife, Laree, for all of her wonderful support and love. Ron is very proud of their son, Nathan, and look forward to all he will be and do in his life.

  • “Playing music is a life long commitment. There are always new things to consider and develop. I’m exhilarated and humbled by music on a daily basis, and plan to continue on this path until my last day on earth.” These words pretty much sums up Bob Mintzer’s approach to music.

Bob has written over 200 big band arrangements. His big band music is played over the world, and has influenced numerous big band writers. He honed his big band writing and playing skills in the bands of Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis. He has also written works for the National Symphony Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra of the Netherlands. WDR Big band in Cologne, HR Big Band in Frankfurt and was commissioned to write a piece for concert band and tenor sax (Go) by a consortium of 50 universities.

As an instrumentalist Bob has worked with Art Blakey, Jaco Pastorius, Sam Jones, Randy Brecker, Gil Evans, the Yellowjackets, GRP All Star Big Band, Mike Manieri, The New York Philharmonic, to name a few. He has done session work for James Taylor, Steve Winwood, Queen, Donald Fagan, Milton Nascimento, and countless others.

Bob currently resides in Los Angeles in the former house of composer Arnold Schoenberg (his first LA residence, 1934-1936), teaches at USC, travels 4 months out of the year, and, when at home, writes and practices constantly. He is generally considered one of the tenor saxophonists who came out the school of New York players in the 70’s, which includes Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, David Liebman and Steve Grossman.
