    1. How does Professor Miller describe the American Character in the 18thcentry!

    Miller begins by citing ". Hector t. "ohn de Cre$ecoer abot American as a new race formed by

    combining of different %ropean ethnicities& and that the gap between rich and poor is mch

    smaller in America. 'hen he cites Ben(amin )ran*lin& who said that different colonies differedfrom one another in go$ernment& economy& and religion. Miller then concldes that both

    Cre$ecoer and )ran*lin were correct+ the colonists were de$eloping a common American

    character despite the differences that e,isted between regions. He also says that the colonists still

    had strong tie to Britain.

    armed the British and the )rench against each other throghot the world. 7n the /orth American

    theater which actally began two years earlier as 9)rench and 7ndian ar:;& )rance allied itself

    with the 7ndians and foght against the British. At first& the British sffered a series of defeats andcolonial protest for forced enlisting and seii$er topain. Althogh the colonists were happy with British $ictory in the war& the war bdget will be

    the case of the impending crisis.

    3. hat does Professor Miller mean when he says 9Ben(amin )ran*lin was an ad$anced agent of an

    ideological re$oltion:! iscss the changing natre of the American character and the inflence

    of the %nlightenment.

    Miller means )ran*lin inspired many to become rich& to wor*& and to rn their bsiness

    independently from go$ernment reglation. 7t is an ideology called pri$atism. )ran*lin belie$ed

    that this wold benefit the society as a whole. At that time& cities were growing and there weremore entrepreners rnning their own bsiness. Also& )ran*lin was part of the %nlightenment&

    e$idenced from his many in$entions& disco$ery on electricity& and his criticism of astrology.
