New Zealand continues to discover emerging talent in its young singers. The very high quality of contestants in the Lexus Song Quest is

witness to the outstanding young opera singers now making their mark. Following the very successful program of Singers

to Listen For last year, our audience will again be able to interact with four artists in a programme of accessible

music. This year the concert is organised in association with The Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, and Dame Kiri

is giving her personal support to the concert. Her accompanist, Terence Dennis, will be our

pianist, and several of our singers will join the Kiri Programme to develop their

careers. Top quality canapes and wine will be served to provide an

ample meal. It will be a great night.

New Talent

Katherine McIndoeSopranoKatherine McIndoe should need no introduction to Wellington audiences; being head girl at Wellington Girl’s College and one of the most outstanding students at the New Zealand School of Music. In recent years she has won many awards and is currently a Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artist with NZ Opera, appearing in the company’s recent Magic Flute production. Katherine is also one of only 6 singers who has been chosen by the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation to participate in their latest major initiative – The Kiri Programme.

Jarvis DamsBaritone Jarvis Dams with his fine baritone voice has also been chosen for The Kiri Programme and has recently been a Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artist with NZ Opera. Jarvis holds a Master of Music with first class honours from the University of Waikato and has been a recipient of a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship. He was also a recent runner-up in the prestigious New Zealand Aria and winner of the national Lieder prize.

Anna DowsleyMezzo-sopranoAnna Dowsley, although still very young, comes with a growing reputation as one of the most outstanding Australian Opera Singers, and already has a string of successes in some of the great mezzo roles such as Rosina in Barber of Seville, Cherubino in Marriage of Figaro and Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte. She has won a string of awards, both as a student and in her early years with Opera Australia, enabling her to study in Italy. Wellington is fortunate to have the opportunity of hearing Anna at this stage.

SPONSORS TO BENEFIT

Jonathan AbernethyTenor Jonathan Abernethy has his first appearance in his home-town for some years. It’s a great opportunity to hear him because he has now established himself as one of the most exciting young singers working regularly with Opera Australia. He has recently been named as a HSBC 2015 Festival d’Aix-en-Provence Laureate and winner of the Australian Opera Award. With a very full programme for the coming year it has been a coup to find a date when Jonathan was free, and he has also been responsible for introducing Anna to her first New Zealand audience.

‘Singers to listen for’ will feature four of our best and brightest hopes for the future in a program designed to delight.
