Directors Message… June's meeting began with a tribute to our National Symbol in honor of Flag Day and

ended with a presentation on cleaning and painting small parts economically. Our meetings

are becoming quite chockfull of info for the hobbyist. If there's something that you'd like to

tackle on your own or need some insight on how to repair a part the monthly meeting is the

place to be! Meetings are a great way to learn or share information. This is ideal travel time

and you don't want to have your car in need of repair. So drive that car to the next meeting.

We'll be back from the National with some pictures and updates from our

National organization.

Stay cool,

Dave and Jo Ann

Story and Photos By Tony Gatta

Rust or "oxidation" Is somewhat a very bad

word in the old car hobby . Telling someone that

there vintage ride is rusty could be cause for a bar

room brawl, like the ones in an old John Wayne

movie where bottles are tossed, chairs are

smashed and men go thru the windows onto the

dirt. Rust is serious business !! Millions are

spent each year to fight it. From Fred painting

his rusty tractor to Men hanging from lines on the

George Washington Bridge attempting to scrape

and paint as so many men had done before. In the

northeast a main reason that a vintage vehicle is

sent to a scrapyard is that the vehicle is just too

rusty to repair. Since we can't change the weather

or move to Arizona, the fight goes on.

Then I saw an ad in Hemmings Motor News for

a product called Evapo-Rust so I checked out

their website. It seemed to be just what I needed

and it was available at Harbor Freight where I

could use my 20% off coupon too. I picked up a

gallon and poured some in small container and

placed in some small Buick parts that were to

fragile for the rock tumbler. The next day I re-

moved the parts and to my surprise the rust was

gone. No toxic smell, no burning fingers, and non

flammable too. All that remained was to wash

and paint the parts. Since then

I've used it many times, you can

reuse it depending on how rusty

the parts are. Evapo-Rust

While checking the drive shaft on my

68 Buick, I noticed what seems to be

excessive play in the differential. If I turn the

drive shaft back and forth until I feel the gears

mesh, there is a lot of sloppiness in the rear.

What could be causing this?

What you are feeling is excessive back

lash in the differential. That is, the

teeth of the pinion gear don’t contact the teeth of

the ring gear until the pinion gear has rotated a

lot. This excessive lash is likely caused by wear

of the ring and pinion , or an incorrectly adjusted

pinion. The depth of the pinions engagement

with the ring gear, which determines the lash, is

controlled by shims which are placed onto the

pinion gear between the gears head and its inner

bearing. You will need to remove the rear end

cover and inspect the gears for wear. Moderate

amounts of wear can be compensated for in the

pinion adjustment. In order to adjust the pinion,

you must disassemble the rear. While it is apart,

it is prudent to evaluate the bearings, side gears,

and other internal parts and replace any that

merit it.

I have a 1953 Buick Super with differ

ential oil leaks at the rear wheel bear-

ings and at the joint between the torque tube and

differential carrier. The service manual says the

seals at the wheel bearings and pinions assembly

need replacing but to do this, according to the

manual, I will need special pulling tools to help

me do the job. Is it possible for me to do the job

without spending a fortune on equipment, or do

you think I should just take it to a professional.

Unfortunately, replacing the seals

in your Buick requires special tools

and a lot of time. Several tool suppliers, includ-

ing Snap-On and Mac, sell a wide variety of

pullers including the ones you need. But they are

extremely expensive and are not worth buying if

you are only going to use them once. You might

try contacting the Buick club in your area. The

club, or a member, might be able to loan you the

necessary tools. In addition to the special tools

needed, however, replacing the seals is a very

time-consuming project that requires patience

and a high degree of mechanical aptitude. I com-

mend your desire to do the job yourself and sug-

gest you try it if you can borrow or rent the

needed tools from someone. Otherwise I suggest

entrusting this job to a professional.
