Jacobite ring sellsfor £12,000

A ring used by Jacobite agents to identify them-selves while carrying secret messages from BonniePrince Charlie has been sold at auction for £12,000.

The ring, set with an emerald, was estimatedbefore the auction at a value of £3,000.

The ring bears a concealed inscription, “CRIII1766” which proved the allegiance of its wearerto the Jacobite cause.

Anyone caught with documents signed by theprince after his defeat at Culloden in 1746 facedexecution, so proof of authenticity was providedinstead by the ring.

1766 was the year that Prince Charles’ father,James, died, leaving the Young Pretender to con-sider himself the rightful king.

Bagpipes to encirclethe world in 2010!

In 1995, a 3,500 strong parade along PrincesStreet in Edinburgh led to the Pipefest event beingreplicated and expanded not only there, but alsoin other locations around the world, raising con-siderable sums for charity in the process.

Now, the same organizers have unveiled plansfor an ambitious 24-hour global celebration.

The idea is to have concerts and parades heldat 20-minute intervals in at least 70 towns and cit-ies around the world on 31 July 2010. A world-wide TV audience of 100 million viewers is tar-geted for this 2010 Pipefest, dubbed “Around theWorld in 24 Hours.”

Places likely to take part include New York,Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dunedin, Perth,Osaka, Hong King, New Delhi, Islamabad, CapeTown Reykjavik, Belfast and Dublin.

The organizers hope that the concerts andparades will be staged at “iconic locations” in par-ticipating cities and that more money will be raisedfor charity.

Annie Moore Memorial now a realityMemorial Dedication Event Set for Irish-

American Immigration Icon “Ellis Island” AnnieMoore for October 11 in New York City Effort ledby great-granddaughters (Phoenix, AZ residents),Phoenix’s Irish Cultural and Learning Foundationand Arizona Philanthropists — The memorialdedication ceremony for the unmarked gravesiteof Irish-American historic icon Annie Moore, thefirst immigrant through Ellis Island in 1892, hasbeen set for Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 2 p.m.at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York. Great-granddaughter and spokesperson for the AnnieMoore MemorialProject, Phoenixresident JuliaDevous, announcedthat the event will befree and open to thepublic.

The unmarkedgravesite of historicfigure “Ellis Island”Annie Moore wasdiscovered in 2006when noted genealogists corrected history by un-veiling her true identity and story.

Devous states, “We are planning a specialevent to properly honor Annie as both a simple, humble woman of Irish heritage from the LowerEast Side, and as an Irish-American historic icon.We understand that Annie holds a special place inthe hearts and minds of Irish-American immigrantsand their families here in America and Ireland. There has been such interest in Annie and the dis-covery of the real story of her life as a New Yorkerthat we expect this event to be fairly high profileand well attended by the public - especially theNew York Irish community.”

She continues, “All are welcome to join thefamily and project supporters. We hope to honorAnnie as well as celebrate her place in history withthis special dedication ceremony.”

Commissioner of Records for New York CityBrian Andersson, who’s genealogical detectivework helped uncover the true identity of Annie as

a New Yorker, and Ireland’s Consul General NiallBurgess will both serve as advisors to and partici-pants in the dedication.

The steering committee has also extendedinvitations to genealogist Megan SmolenyakSmolenyak, who unveiled the Annie Moore mys-tery in September 2006, and to Cardinal EdwardEgan or a representative of the Archdiocese of NewYork to preside over the ceremony.

“We plan to incorporate both cultural and li-turgical aspects into the dedication, which we thinkare both fitting and appropriate to the occasion,”

Devous says.Government offi-

cials, dignitaries, projectsupporters, descendantfamily members andrepresentatives of theIrish-American commu-nity will also be in-volved.

The monument, carved from Irish BlueLimestone, is currently

under production in County Clare, Ireland by mas-ter carver Francis Mc Cormack of Irish NaturalStone Products, Ltd., and will be imported by theirBoston affiliate, Irish Natural Stone, Inc.

Cardinal Egan granted a special waiver forthe use of Irish Blue Limestone for the monumentin Calvary Cemetery due to the historic nature ofthe project.

The monument is a simple but elegant Celticcross with elements that represent both her Irishand American heritage, and her connection to the“Ellis Island” story.

Funding for the Annie Moore MemorialProject - for the monument and dedication - hasbeen realized through a national/international ef-fort through the Irish Cultural and Learning Foun-dation in Phoenix, Arizona. Launched on St.Patrick’s Day 2007, the project met and surpassedits goal earlier this spring with major support com-

ing from Phoenix, New York City and Irelandthrough the “Ante Up for Annie” campaign.

Arizona philanthropists Norman McClelland(Chairman, Shamrock Foods) and Bill O’Brien(President, Wm. Howard O’Brien Companies, LC)provided lead gifts of $5,000 each. New York’snonprofit The Kelly Gang, Inc., named the projectas a beneficiary of their annual St. Patrick’s Daybenefit with a gift of $15,000, and New York busi-ness owner Tommy Ryan (Annie Moore’s Pub andRestaurant, Manhattan) made the initial $1,000project gift. Ireland’s Cobh Heritage Centre in Cork(which boasts a bronze statue of Annie) and ananonymous Irish donor have both made $1,000contributions. Boston’s Irish Natural Stone, Inc.has provided an in-kind gift of $2,000.

In addition, the project received an unex-pected grant of $5,000 from the Government ofIreland through the office of the Minister of For-eign Affairs with the support of Consul GeneralsEmer Deane (west coast) and Niall Burgess (eastcoast).

Devous states, “The support from around thecountry and Ireland has really been amazing. Weare so touched by the generosity of all of our do-nors, and are so grateful.”

PROJECT BACKGROUND: On January 1,1892, Annie Moore, a teenage girl from CountyCork, Ireland, made headlines as the first immi-grant to be processed at Ellis Island. Her imagewill forever represent the millions who passedthrough Ellis Island in pursuit of the Americandream, and is a symbol for immigrants of all na-tions that have contributed to the rich fabric of theUnited States.

On September 15, 2006 noted genealogistsrevealed the true identity and story of Annie andher descendants. At that time it was also discov-ered that Annie Moore’s remains lie in an un-marked grave in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, NewYork, along with five of her children. Led by de-scendant family members and supporters, theAnnie Moore Memorial Project, establishedthrough the Irish Cultural and Learning Founda-tion of Phoenix, Arizona, was created to raise funds

for a monument for her unmarked gravesite. Dedication of Annie Moore Memorial will

be held Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the

and stayed at a large hotel. However, he didnae feel thatthe natives were friendly.

“At four o’clock every morning,” he told a friend,“they hammered on my bedroom door, on the walls andeven on the floor and ceiling. Heck, sometimes they ham-mered so loud, I could hardly hear myself playing the bag-pipes!”

ROBERTSON, ROBERT: Where in NorthCarolina might the ROBERTSON Familiescoming early from Scotland, I believe fromArgyll, have settled? I believe ourROBERTSON Families came early to NorthCarolina, settling on the eastern coast area. Ibelieve as early as 1715 or 1745. Might thisbe the area the Families settled? Mygrandfather ROBERT ROBERTSON, one ofthe youngest, if not the youngest, was bornc.1833. No other member of this large familyis known. Apparently ROBERT, one of a largefamily of boys, was orphaned at an early age.According to census records ROBERT’sparents too were born in North Carolina.ROBERT and CATHERINE A. GARBERmarried September 3, 1859, Douglas County,Illinois. One son was born in Illinois, five moresons were born in Indiana before the familysettled in southeastern Colorado whereROBERT died April 8, 1905. Any help wouldbe very much appreciated. Mabel I. One of our genealogy patrons recently dis-cussed a situation she heard about at a yard saleup north. I have eliminated names and specificreferences to places in the interest of privacy is-sues. I think the circumstances and its implica-tions for everyone, especially those interested ingenealogy, speaks for itself.

The yard sale was like most common sales.Items for sale included decorative plates, light fix-tures, Christmas lights, old clothes, tools, and avariety of computer and automotive parts. As herfriend was browsing, she noticed a slim, coloredleather book, its border framed in gold. This wasclearly something personal in nature that waslikely discarded either by accident or by a familymember cleaning up a home or apartment afterthe death of an elderly family member. This un-fortunate occurrence often happens when the sig-nificance of an old treasure is not apparent to theperson who is getting the house or apartmentready for a sale or new occupant.

The frontispiece read: “In Memoriam.” Itwas a funeral book for a gentlemen who was born, according to the information typed on the nextpage, on 1 March 1856 in Buffalo, New York, and passed away on 30 October 1943 in Peoria,Illinois. Other information in the book includedthe name of the woman who played the organ atthe funeral, the name and address of the Presby-terian Church where the funeral was held, detaileddescriptions of the various flower arrangements, and a register containing the signatures of themourners that attended.

The book also contained a variety of otherimportant personal documents. Carefully foldedinside the front section of the book were two cop-ies of the deceased individual’s death certificate. There was a letter dated 1881 from an employeeof the Western Electric Company recommendingthat the deceased be admitted to Rutgers Univer-

sity. Other items included oldphotographs from a company-sponsored event onNew Year’s Day in 1930, a customs declarationfor one of his sons, and a newspaper clipping foran award received by a daughter. The back sectionof the book held a folder containing a variety ofpersonal correspondence and legal papers show-ing specific dates and places of residence, employ-ment, churches and schools attended, and otherfamily information.

The gentlemen conducting the yard sale hadno idea of how, when, or where the book had comefrom. Our shopper was just starting to get involvedin genealogy. She was in the early stages of learn-ing how to gather family information, organizedata, and learning the importance of old docu-ments. She appreciated how grateful she wouldhave been to stumble across this type of informa-tion in her own research. The classes at the localgenealogical society made her determined to tryand find out as many clues as possible to find some-one in the family and return the book to them.Using the skills developed in genealogy classes, and advice from the local genealogy society, ourshopper searched online phone directories, censusrecords for the state and counties mentioned,Googled the family names, posted messages onvarious message boards, and any other strategy shecould think of. The process is now going on fiveyears and counting.

This story should make you think about allthe items of genealogical value that may be sittingaround your home or the home of a sibling whohad no idea of their importance. The items couldinclude: report cards, family heirlooms, class pho-tos, old legal papers, yearbooks, diaries, tax returns,or various insurance papers. Thirty years from nowsomeone might find theseitems interesting. Others may think they are trashand dispose of them without a second thought.

Ellis Island MarriagesEllis Island MarriagesEllis Island MarriagesEllis Island MarriagesEllis Island Marriages

Marriages took place at the Ellis Island Reception Center. This factrecently caught one of our patrons

and me by surprise when we located one of hisancestors arriving in 1907. In theoretical legalterms, these ceremonies should have been reportedto the New York City, Borough of ManhattanHealth Department.

Ellis Island was legally part of Manhattan atthat time. In many cases, these marriages were toolsof necessity for convenience and were dissolvedshortly afterwards. This arrangement was impor-tant to the parties in-volved due to legalconsequences in exist-ence at the time.

Unaccompaniedwomen, regardless ofwhether they weremarried or not, wereprohibited from leav-ing the Ellis Island Re-ception Center with-out an adult male ac-companying her.

My uncle servedin the New York CityPolice Department foralmost 30 years. He made a comment in passingmany years ago, before I had any experience ingenealogy, that one fear the New York authoritieshad about single women coming in at Ellis Islandwas prostitution. If they had no family or friendswaiting for them, criminal elements were always

looking for unsuspecting immigrants to recruit. Hiscomment never made an impact on me until thissearch.

However, it was quite possible that singleswould have met on board ship. Some of these mar-riages were sincere in nature and lasted. This isanother of example of why I always caution patronsabout judging the actions of their ancestors by todaysstandards. The legal environment is totally differ-ent. Unaccompanied women and minor children canbe found on the “List of Detained Aliens” that ac-companies the passenger list. It may be at the front

The Celtic Community has lost a very spe-cial friend with the passing of Kathy Wood. Sheand her husband Len have been part of the IrishCultural Center in Phoenix, Arizona, from the verybeginning. It was always a special occasion whenthe couple, members of the Phoenix Pipe Band, played their pipes for a Center Function.

Anita “Kathleen” Wood, loving wife, friend, sister and daughter passed away at home on Au-gust 20th. Kathy was born on February 26, 1951 inEscondido, CA. She is survived by her parents;Betty and Roger Shappee, sister andbrother-in-law; Candace and GregParton, brother and sister-in-law;Curtis Shappee and Penny Babeland husband Leonard Wood.

A fourth generation native ofEscondido, Kathy attended schoolsthere, graduating from EscondidoHS in 1968 and entered UC, SanDiego with honors. She graduatedfrom UC, Riverside with a doublemajor in Psychology & Linguistics.Kathy married Leonard Wood inRiverside, CA on July 21, 1973 andlived in the Southeast for most ofthe next 27 years. She sold profes-sional television equipment in Atlanta, GA andmoved to Phoenix in 1998 to be close to family.Kathy toured Ireland several times by bicycle withher husband, Len. They met through playing bag-pipes and continued playing pipes throughout herlife time. She was a co founder of the SavannahCeltic Pipe Band and played in bands in the South-east, Mesa and Phoenix.

Kathy served on the Board of Trustees for theIrish Cultural and Learning Foundation. Takingadvantage of the classes offered by the Center’sAcademy of Irish & Celtic Studies, she became anIrish speaker. Kathy volunteered for countlessevents through the years; serving as vendor chairfor the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire as wellat the Arizona Irish Festival, of which she was oneof the Founders. She loved checking out garage

In 2006, Kathyand friend Janice Bryson founded the non-profitIrish Arizona Project, dedicated to studying theIrish or those of Irish ancestry who settled in Ari-zona. As a historian, Kathy took great pleasure inresearching the stories and images of Irish pioneersand is co-author of “The Irish in Arizona,” to be

Scottish epitaphs? They’re wonderful!During the period from about 1600 to about

1850, no self-respecting Scot would allow death toovertake him without first having immortalized him-self with a proper epitaph. If circumstances did notpermit, the local vicar of some such dignitary wouldtake a stab at it. Basically, the epitaph was meant togive details on the life of the person buried below, but the wit of the Scot made it much more.

From an Aberdeen Churchyard: Here lie thebones of Elizabeth Charlotte, Born a virgin, died aharlot. She was aye a virgin at seventeen, A re-markable thing in Aberdeen.

From a churchyard near Greenock: Here lies, alas! Poor Roger Norton, whose sudden death wasoddly brought on! Trying one day his corns to mowoff, The razor slipped and cut his toe off! The toe,or rather what it grew to, The part then took tomortifying. Which was the cause of Roger’s dy-ing.

From a churchyard in Deer, Aberdeenshire:Here lies an old woman wrapt in her linen, Mother

to James and Thomas Binnen; Who for want of acoffin was buried in a girnal. The earth got theshell, and the De’il got the girnal. (A girnal is ameat chest.)

From Lochtyside: As I was riding along theroad, Not kennin’ whit was comin’ An Auld greybull a’ horny cam’ After me a runnin’; He wi’ hishorny heid struck me He being sore offended I fromma horse was forced to fa’ And so, my days wereended.

From Dumfries: Here lies AndrewMacPherson, Who was a peculiar person. He stoodsix foot two Without his shoe, And he was slew, AtWaterloo.

From a churchyard in Torryburn, Fife: In thischurchyard lies Eppie Coutts, Either here, or here-abouts; But where it is, none can tell til Eppie riseand tell herself.

Elvis’ folksfound inScotland

Villagers in Lonmay near Aberdeen are ex-cited to find that Elvis Presley’s ancestors livedthere in this quiet corner of northeastern Scotland.Scots author, Allan Morrison, in his The PresleyProphecy, has traced Presley’s ancestry back 250years using local records and the files of the Churchof Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Morrison found that eight generations beforeElvis took to the stage, his ancestor Andrew Presleymarried Elspeth Leg in 1713 in Lonmay. Their son,Andrew, became a blacksmith and was the firstPresley to leave Scotland, emigrating to the Ameri-can Colonies in 1745.

Here’s a little bit about ScottishHalloween - known as “Samhuinn” in Gaelic

The word “Samhain” or “Samhuinn” means very literally “the end of summer” or “summer’send.” Both Scotland and Ireland call Halloween Oiche Shamhna.

When Christianity came to Scotland and Ireland, Samhain was changed to “Hallowmas” or “AllSaints Day.” This commemorates the souls of the dead who had been canonized that year. Over time, the night became known amongst the people as Halloween or All Hallows Eve or even Hollantide.

About the same time, November 2nd was named as All Souls Day. On that day, prayers were to beoffered to the souls of all who had died and for those waiting in Purgatory for entry into Heaven.

Just a little research will reveal that throughout time, pagan and Christian beliefs mingle intomany celebrations from the end of March through the first week of November.

Traditionally the Scottish “turnip” our rutabaga would be carved and hollowed to form a lan-tern. A pumpkin is much easier to carve!
