If anyone had told me nine years ago that we’d end up reaching 100 issues, I would never have believed them. But here I am, late as always, adding the finishing touches to the magazine ready to send down to our printers. Long-suffering, patient, efficient and professional Evonprint in Small Dole, they have been brilliant and stayed smiling however late I am. 100 issues of BN5 and 57 of thirteen8 and they’ve not let us down once. Thank you Steve and the team, I am eternally grateful to you all for making BN5 look so good!

To celebrate our 100th issue we have produced a Henfield 2015 Calendar. Local businesses have sponsored each month and every single penny of the £6 donation price goes directly to HART - Henfield Area Response Team.

I think HART deserve our support. They are completely unpaid and attend emergencies at all hours across the BN5 area, giving lifesaving early response care while an ambulance is en-route. They are a comfort to those in distress and have saved countless lives. Please help us to raise as much money for them as we can. We’ll be attending lots of local events with the calendars

and they are available in many High Street shops (see page 26), or you can call the office to buy one and we’ll post it out to you.

Finally, THANK YOU for reading and contributing to BN5 magazine, what would we do without you!

FRIENDS OF THE HENFIELD MUSEUMThe friends of the Henfield museum is now up and running. At the recent inaugural meeting, a commit-tee was formed and Wynn Saunders was elected the Chairman. Several volunteers came forward to help the curator Alan Barwick to undertake maintenance tasks; one of which is the cleaning of the perspex cover on the model of Henfield railway station. It is an exciting times for the museum, with new ideas to attract more visitors. We have already installed new lighting and informa-tion boards; soon there will be a notice board outside the bus shelter. We will be organising talks, with visits to other museums in the near future and circulate a regular newsletter. The museum is full of interesting artefacts and there is always something new to see for adults as well as children. If you are interested in becoming a friend, currently there is no membership fee, please ring Wynn on 01273 495910. We are now on the Henfield Hub www.henfieldhub.com/friends-of-henfield-museum/

WEST GRINSTEAD & DISTRICT PLOUGHING MATCH The beautiful setting of the Warnham Park Estate played host to the annual West Grinstead & District Ploughing Match and Agricultural Show in September with a bumper crowd attending and record entries. The Society is very grateful to Jonathan Lucas and the Warnham Estate who hosted the match together with their farming occupier, Dominic Gardner and his team who had worked very hard in preparing for the day. The hedge-laying and ploughing got under way early on in the day with a large variety of trac-tors both old and new, including traditional horse and steam ploughing. There were plenty of competitors in the welding, field produce, hedge laying and cutting classes and entrants varied from young teenagers to those in their eighties. The main ring was busy throughout the day with the dairy and beef cattle classes, a large variety of sheep breeds and of course the ever popular young person’s lamb handling class which saw a great number of youngsters parading their sheep to the crowds. This year also saw a record number of trade stands with a vast array of modern and vintage equipment on dis-play. There was a very popular produce competition, not forgetting displays on sheep shearing, a gun dog scurry, ferret racing, hound parade, clay shoot, ‘meet the farmer’ education area, a very competitive tug-of-war and, of course, the crowd pleasing terrier racing, all of which made for a very successful day. The beer and produce tent did a roaring trade throughout the

day and the Young Farmers Club did an excellent job of keeping the crowds entertained with a variety of activities.Rowan Allan

HENFIELD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP: 9 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENTThe Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) held its AGM on 11 September 2014. The Chairman, Tony Jackson, reported on another successful year, say-ing that “the 9th year of the Partnership has contin-ued the success of previous years, bringing about benefits to the local community that were likely not to have been achieved either so quickly by others or at all. Much of our success results from continuing to have a close and understanding relationship with the Parish Council and being focussed on delivering actions.” Tony referred to the Henfield Hub, the com-munity website set up nearly two years ago. “Since then there have been over 51,000 visitors, and there are now around 500 registered users – very impres-sive figures.” Also with the HCP’s Action for Older People’s Group, a computer club was set up to help people to get online and become computer literate. He then mentioned several aspects of the HCP’s work being focussed on helping Henfield to evolve in a sustainable way. “What constitutes a sustainable development is a much debated topic, one where

As Retained Fire Fighters we all have other occupations, but when the call comes we drop whatever we are doing and be-come part of a team. Depending on the type of cover given, you may be required to respond from home and/or work, day and/or night. You will be trained to carry out all the duties of a Fire Fighter, you will need to carry out initial training before you can safely respond to emergency calls, which will include some on station training and some at a central training course. Ongoing training will require attendance at a two hour weekly drill night on sta-tion, plus periodic refresher courses in areas such as breathing apparatus and trauma care. You will also have the opportunity to undertake optional training courses in order to gain extra skills. If you are interested in a role with us please feel free to contact CC Jim Mundy 07742 128 900 or FF Da-ryl Radwell 07590 420 820. IN MEMORIUM – SALLY ORRICKOn the 23 July Sally died suddenly at the age of just 62. At her funeral, my son and I requested that dona-tions be made to HART (who were first on the scene) and/or British Heart Foundation (she died from a heart attack). I know Sally would have been proud and flat-tered by the resultant collection which totalled nearly £1,600 for HART and £970 for BHF. I would like to thank everyone who gave so generously and I sin-cerely hope that some good will come from her un-timely death. Since we moved to Henfield in 1980, Sally has been secretary of the Henfield Badminton club for over 30 years, been a volunteer driver with the hospital car service, a teaching assistant at the primary school and active on the Small Dole Action Committee. If anyone tells you there is no such thing as ‘love at first sight’, please tell them from me they are quite, quite wrong. She was my love, my world, my life.Bob Orrick

HENFIELD GARDEN CLUBOur last talk of the year is on Tuesday 4 November at the Henfield Hall when Sarah Carlisle will be telling us about Brighton and Hove Gardens where she has been instrumental over the last ten years of chang-ing Brighton and Hove’s municipal planting. Anyone who has been to Brighton recently will have seen how the old-fashioned, labour intensive and costly bed-

ding areas have been transformed to more natural-istic planting styles using early bulbs, perennials and grasses. Come along to hear the story behind these changes. The talk starts at 7.30pm, tea and coffee is available beforehand. Non-members/visitors are al-ways welcome, admission £3. The final event of our year, a members-only Christmas social, is on Tues-day 2 December. Following the success of our Ital-ian themed meal last year, our Social Secretary has this year organised a French themed evening which we are sure will be another success. The last date to book this event (members only) will be at the above talk. For more details about joining our friendly club please contact our Membership Secretary Linda Beresford by email [email protected] or phone 01273.492497.Margaret Hollingsworth

FATHER CHRISTMAS IS COMING TO YOUR STREET!The BP Guild in its effort to raise funds for the Se-nior Citizens day out in 2015, intend, health permit-ting, to escort Father Christmas his sleigh and Dasher throughout the Parish of Henfield during December. This will be in keeping with the fast approaching festive season and the “living advent” that is being organised. BP Guild members are alleged to have a self-recording singing carols. This they will play at the time. They will try to reach as many of the households in Small Dole and Henfield. Look out for the dates and areas visited in our De-cember editions or the Henfield Hub. Also lookout for arrangements with the BP Guild of when Santa is to visit on Christmas day to deliver presents to children.

This new research report has really brought to life the positive attributes of state boarding provision.” Fol-lowing breakfast Mr Herbert had a tour of the four boarding Houses, three of which have recently been

refurbished, now offering boarding for 124 boarders. Steyning Grammar School is one of only 35 state boarding schools nationwide, and the only one in Sussex. State Boarding offers great value for money, with no tuition fees and affordable accommodation. Places are offered on a weekly or full time basis for students from Years 9-13. The quality of boarding provision at the Steyning Grammar school has been judged by Ofsted to be ‘Outstanding in every category’ (2012 & 2009).

SUPER-FAST BROADBANDHenfield Hub computer club is now benefitting from super-fast fibre optic broadband at Henfield Leisure Centre. The club meets every Wednesday at the cen-tre from 10am till 12pm and everyone is welcome.

Remembrance Sunday this year falls on Sunday 9 November which is the closest Sunday to Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First

World War. Across our local area Remembrance Sunday services will be held to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and other conflicts. Some of these services are detailed below – all Henfield residents are welcome to attend. Friday 7 November - Poppy Cross Ceremony in the cemetery At 11.30am children from Year 6 at St Peter’s School will read eulogies to our fallen servicemen and lay a poppy cross on each of their graves.Sunday 9 November - Remembrance SundayAt 9.20am the parade will leave the War Memorial in Cagefoot Lane and march to St Peter’s Church. The service of remembrance will start at 9.45am and the parade will leave the church at 10.35 and return to the War Memorial. At 10.50 there will be an Ecumenical Service, organised by the Parish Council, at the War

Memorial including a two minute silence and reading of the names of the fallen. There will be road closures in the High Street from 9.15 to 9.30am and again from 10.30 to 11.30am. Diversions signs will be in place directing traffic via Nep Town Road, Broomfield Road, Upper Station Road and Church Street. Tuesday 11 November – Remembrance DayA two minute silence will be observed at the War Memorial on Cagefoot Lane at 11am and a lone bugler will sound the last post.

“BN5 is like part of the furniture.” “It wasn’t in BN5 so it can’t be happening.” “My postman hasn’t de-livered BN5 this month. What’s going on?” Those

are a few if the things people have said over the years (luckily we don’t hear the final one very often!). They are the comments that make me most proud of what we’ve achieved over the last nine years of publishing BN5. If it doesn’t arrive then we hear about it! 100 feels like a milestone for our business and a good time to reflect on the past few years. From the first issue when it was just me as writer, advertising sales-person, graphic designer of sorts and tea-maker (only one of those things done half-competently, I make a mean cup of builder’s) to now, with our two publica-tions (we launched thirteen8 in 2010), our smart web-site and this month our new charity calendar. Without the enthusiasm and encouragement of our first set of advertisers back in November 2009 (Cor-nerweighs, Stokes, The White Hart, Village Care, Henfield Hall, Jasmines, The Conservatory Company, Henfield Leisure Centre, Kingston Smith, Coles Auto-motive, PHB and Braziers, along with a few business-es who are no longer around) I wouldn’t have done it. So, a huge thank you to them for believing in the idea. We are continually indebted to them and all the local businesses that advertise with us. Many have become firm friends and we are great believers in buying local-ly and using local tradespeople. Henfield is so lucky to have such great shops, service providers and reliable businesses, we are very proud to champion them. There are seven of us working on the magazine now, mainly part-time. Zoë Standing looks after our sales and keeps our customers happy and she’s brilliant at it. Zoë has the biggest laugh, we are guaranteed a sunny day when she’s here! She is as passionate and enthusiastic about BN5 today as she was the day she started back in 2007. Judith Ryan is our ‘newbie’ and the cheerful voice at the end of the line when you call us. Always efficient and organized, “Judith, what did we do before you?!” has become a phrase often ut-tered in the office. Juthy Slaughter is deserving of a

carriage clock for long service (and sufferance). Juth somehow manages to make all the figures add up and occasionally seem interesting (unbelievable, isn’t it?). Without her we’d grind to a halt. Sarah Butler has been writing articles and editing our news and diary submissions since 2011, she makes it all look very easy and manages to fit BN5 around her ‘proper’ job for the Environment Agency and her three gorgeous girls. I have no idea how she does it, and remain the most calm person in the office. We also call on the talented and artistic skills of local graphic designers, Helen Boosey creates our much-admired covers for both magazines, while our other ‘newbie’ Emily Black is learning the ropes on ad designs and magazine layouts. Chris from DCP is ever efficient and helps out when we get busy, which we frequently do. The lovely Sue Willis looks after our website, her eagle-eyes spot any errors and make sure everything is fully updated. The new website (www.bn5magazine.co.uk) has been a really big project for us, and after initial ‘settling in’ is working really well and proving very useful. Along with our Facebook page (with 700 likes and building) which regularly gets over a thousand views on our comments. Both are a really nice way of us getting valuable feedback – making sure we keep you right up to date. We now publish BN5 digitally and we love to see where in the world it’s being read online – how fabulous to be able to say ‘hello’ to our readers in Ger-many, Australia, France, the US and Cyprus. We even have a reader in Venezuela who regularly downloads BN5, we are assuming it’s the same person!Thank you everyone for supporting us; for reading the magazine and for letting us know when we get it right and when get it wrong. We’ll be at various village events on the run-up to Christmas selling our Henfield Charity Calendar like fury, so please come and say “Hello”. On the 12th December there might even be some mulled wine and chocolate brownies! Emma Osman, Editor

With winter on its way it’s time to turn your attention to preparing yourself and your skin for the cold months ahead. As we hibernate indoors germs are more likely to spread and elements such as the dry winter air and central heating can wreak havoc on your and your family’s health and skin. Locally based Tisserand Aromatherapy and Barefoot SOS harness the power of natural essential oils to bring a range of wellbeing, skincare, bath and body products to help give you a boost.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for their exquisite aromas and natural healing powers. Rich in botanical benefits and natural antioxidants, plant oils boost radiant, healthy skin while their therapeutic properties work to help improve our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Established for over 40 years in Brighton, Tisserand Aromatherapy has recently moved into more spacious premises in BN5 to provide larger facilities in which to blend its essential oils, while also providing easy access to the motorways. Tisserand source its 100% organic, wild crafted or ethically harvested essential oils from around the world to ensure maximum fragrance, intensity and purity, but these premium oils are hand-blended by the company’s in-house aromatherapy expert and bottled right here in BN5.

Tisserand top winter tip

Keep your head clear and the winter chill at bay by combining two vital essential oils. Lavender oil, nature’s own antiseptic, and Eucalyptus for easy breathing. Try 4 drops of Lavender oil in a vaporiser or diffuser to refresh and purify your home or office and an equal amount of drops of Eucalyptus on a tissue to clear sinuses.

The Tottington Woodlanders Conservation group has been managing Tottington Woods in Small Dole for over 22 years. The woods, which had been largely

neglected since just after World War II, are considered one of the finest examples of a traditional bluebell woods in the local area.We manage the woods in a traditional style: coppicing the understory and preserving the habitat to encourage a rich diversity of fauna and flora. We have been gath-ering information from various surveys about the plants and other wildlife dependent on this style of woodland over the years and have identified some unusual and scarce species now thriving in Tottington Woods. These include many ancient woodland indicator plants which only thrive in woodland that has been in existence for many hundreds of years (these indicator plants can be viewed on our web site in the floral list). The main task of coppicing takes place every Sun-day throughout the winter months by our small band of committed workers and it usually involves involve cutting and sorting the coppice. Last winter we were involved in learning a new skill in hedge laying and if you walk through the woods you will have seen the wonderful hedge that we created in the north east corner. Along with the work, there is a huge amount of fun and laughter, and we take great pleasure from knowing that we are contributing to betterment of the woods. There is always time to stop and gather around the fire for a welcome cup of tea and a chat - where else can you go on a cold winter’s morning to meet friends, get some exercise, enjoy the great outdoors and get a free cup of tea?

Earlier this year we signed a new agreement with our land owners, Hopegar Properties (after the comple-tion of the original 21 year understanding) who give regular support to our management of the woodland. We have a tripartite agreement with Hopegar and West Sussex County Council who, in the form of the countryside rangers, give our group valuable advice and support. We sell the cut wood as bean sticks, pea boughs and stakes, or we turn it into charcoal or craft items which we sell at various events throughout the summer. This enables our group to function without applying for grants to maintain the wood. This summer we had a grand display in Red Oaks garden during the Henfield Garden and Arts weekend where we demonstrated the use of traditional pole lathes and sold items made by members of the group. We also had a good display at the Small Dole Horticultural show with the addition of ornamental bulrushes made by Jill. If you would like to buy any of our tradi-tional garden products it’s a good idea to contact us late in the winter to place your order. Our new chairman, Mal-colm Knight, is looking forward to the challenges ahead. Malcolm (who has been a member of Totting-ton Woodlanders since it began in 1992) takes over

Here you can view our most recent activities and any up-and-coming events as well post photos and comments about your walks in the Tottington Woods. We welcome new members to join us either in our winter coppicing work, or to help with other activities such as delivering our newsletter or administrative tasks. Life rushes byAre you noticing the changing seasons? That wonderful summer seems forever ago, and now you are on the highway to the Christmas high pressure zone, probably in the fast lane of that highway, overtaking whenever you can…

The Inner criticDo you find that there is a constant “to-do list” in your head? You could be taking the children to school, but perhaps, in between chatting, you are thinking about the tasks you need / must / ought to complete before you pick them up later. Sleep walkingWhen you have glugged down that morning caffeine shot, it is on to the next thing on the list, your mind on automatic pilot, a dictator insisting you must get as many things done as quickly as possible. Sometimes the rebel asserts

itself and inertia can set in, just the thought of all that stuff to do is exhausting! Reconnect with realityIf this sounds familiar, and you would like to rediscover what it feels like to step back a little, slow down and smell the roses, some sessions with Nicola can help you to reconnect with your natural ability to be mindful. This means choosing to be present and open to whatever is happening around and within you in a given moment. Simple and difficult at the same time, but relaxation techniques and mindful practices, such as doing one thing at a time, can really help to make the day more enjoyable and just as productive. Many people find they sleep better and manage their food intake and mood better too.

The Steyning Air Cadets were given the experience of a lifetime at their annual awards lunch at Tottington Manor in September when two Lancaster bombers

performed a special detour over the South Downs just for them! The awards lunch, which followed a Battle of Britain memorial service at St Andrews Parish Church in Steyning, was to celebrate the cadet’s achievement from the previous 12 months. Both aircraft were taking part in the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight UK Tour and were on their way from Shoreham Airport to Duxford Airshow. On hearing that the Steyning squadron were nearby, the pilots made a special diversion to fly over Tottington Manor where the Cadets were parading in the grounds with the union flag. The glorious pair roared over the historic restaurant so low that the cadets could feel the air vibrate with the loud rumble of their engines. The amazing fly past was organised by the guest of honour at the lunch, Mr Robert Pooley CStJ. FRIN. FRAeS. of Pooley’s Swords and Air Pilot Publications in Shoreham. The Steyning squadron commander Flight Lieutenant Dave Emsley said: “Mr Pooley is a fantastic man with an incredible career in aviation. He started as an Air Cadet, entered the Air Force, after leaving became an aircraft engineer and started his Air Pilot Publication and pilot accessories business. He remains very active in supporting aviation and the RAF and hence he managed to arrange the fly past for us”. He went on to describe the experience: “This

was an incredible experience - I never thought we would have a twin Lancaster fly past and it will be something the cadets remember for the rest of their lives! None of us are likely to ever see it again.”The Lancaster is the most famous and successful RAF heavy bomber of World War II which first took the skies in 1941. Over 7,000 bombers were built during the war, both here in the UK and in Canada. Around half of these were lost in operations or destroyed in crashes. Of those that survived, most were scrapped at the end of the war. Today there are only two airwor-thy Lancasters left in the world – one owned by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and one by the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Cadet Chandi Slaughter described the experience: “On the day of our Awards Dinner we were told that some Lancasters might fly over the restaurant. Dur-ing our lunch, just before 2pm our commanding of-ficer asked us to go outside and stand at attention in a squad. Then we heard this really loud rumble. Over the hills flew two Lancaster Bombers. They were mas-sive and scared all the cows!” She then went on to explain: “They are the only two flying Lancasters left in the world. It was really special because they had done a detour just for us, and it might be the last time they fly together, as one is from Canada. They were magnificent!”The Steyning Air Cadets would like to thank Mr Pooley for arranging such a special and unique experience.Sarah Butler

Warning: The value of your investment may go down as well as up.

At last, it seems the Government is beginning to understand the

importance of financial education. In last month’s article I commented on the promise made in the March Budget to offer free face-to-

face guidance to those at retirement, with the intention of giving them the knowledge to be able to choose the correct retirement option for them. In addition to this, as of the start of this academic year, Financial Literacy will now form part of the national curriculum for eleven to sixteen year olds and there will also be more inclusion of financial studies for younger years.I doubt there are many people that would argue this is not a very welcome development. Finance is now a huge part of everyday life for most people – I don’t think I have sat through an ad break that hasn’t included an advert for a financial product for some years now. Loans with four figure interest rates are now available within fifteen minutes, seventeen year olds are expected to understand insurance terminology when insuring their cars and anybody attending University is likely to leave with eye watering debt. It is therefore clear to see that young people need to be financially literate. We are passionate about financial literacy and for the past six years, we have been coordinating and delivering a seven week

financial literacy course to pupils in years ten and eleven at a local high school. These lessons have formed part of the students’ Personal, Social, Health and Vocational Education (PSHVE) lessons and have focussed on the importance of budgeting, dangers of debt, effective use of comparison sites and understanding insurance jargon, as well as explaining taxation, investments and the process for buying or renting a property. Whilst I am pleased with this seriously overdue initiative, I have some fears that the curriculum may not address the most important and relevant areas of finance. There are many sources which have suggested that this will be delivered as part of Maths lessons and will focus on calculating APRs and using currency as a unit of measurement. If this does become the case then many people, who have campaigned for this change for many years, will feel very deflated. The inclusion of financial literacy in the national curriculum is of course a step in the right direction and as long as the personal and emotional side of finance is addressed, future generations should be well informed to make the correct financial decisions. This is now more important than ever, with the increasingly quick and easy access to a myriad of financial products online.Richard Cohen, FPFS, Chartered Financial Planner

If you are planning a Christmas party for your staff – don’t let the taxman

crush your festive spirits! Paul Samrah of Kingston Smith LLP advises how to celebrate in style.A staff party, paid for by an employer, technically

counts as a benefit in kind on which employees are taxed. However there is an exemption that allows employers to host the event without it being treated as a taxable benefit – provided the cost per head is no more than £150. For the exemption to apply, the event must be generally open to all and not be exclusive to a particular group. However events based on separate working locations or departments of employees are allowed, if generally available to all employees within the location or department. Unless the principle of generality is achieved, then the full amount is taxable against the employees who attended. For example, an exclusively Directors event which excluded employees would not qualify for the exemption. Employers may organise more than one annual event and all such events may qualify for relief as long as the cost per head, in any one Tax Year, does not exceed £150 in aggregate. If say, two events are held, one costing £120 per head and the second £50 per head, in total you have breached the £150 limit. In this case, the whole of the first event will fall within the £150 exemption but none of the second. If only one event is held in the year and the sum spent is more than £150 per head, then the full amount spent will become liable to Income Tax and National Insurance (NI) for both staff and employer alike. It is taxed as a benefit, which could bring a nasty chill in the New Year. When planning your event and estimating the tax implications, remember that the price per head is calculated on the total number of attendees, that is all staff, their partners and any clients, and not just employees. Secondly, make sure you include all incidental costs. This means adding up not just the venue hire and catering costs but all the other things, such as entertainment fees, taxi fares, overnight accommodation and any VAT charged (regardless of whether or not you are VAT registered). Divide the total cost of each function by the total number of people (including non-employees) who attend, in order to arrive at the cost per head. If an HMRC enquiry is launched, you will need to provide details of all the costs and attendees.Beware of trying to apply the HMRC’s concession to ordinary staff entertaining. You need to hold an event that is clearly a formally organised function. Some employers also make the mistake of charging the party to entertainment in the accounts, then

Christmas Parties and Giftsforgetting that an event worth over £150 per head must be disclosed on the P11D. There are potentially harsh penalties for incorrect completion of the forms as well as Corporation Tax implications. It is worth remembering that although VAT on entertainment is not reclaimable, VAT on staff parties can be reclaimed, even if it exceeds £150 per head. This is an extra Christmas bonus not to be overlooked!Turning to gifts for staff from their employer – HMRC do accept nowadays that minor gifts may be provided tax-free for employees. There is no statutory ‘de minimis’ limit, so care is needed. For instance an employer may provide employees with a seasonal gift, such as a turkey, a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates at Christmas. All of these gifts are considered to be trivial and are as such not taxable. Where there are a large number of employees, the total cost of providing a gift to each employee may be considerable, but where the gift to each employee is a trivial benefit, this principle applies regardless of the total cost to the employer and the number of employees concerned. If the gift extends beyond the trivial, ie from a bottle or two of wine to a case, from a turkey to a Christmas hamper, you should take advice as it is likely to be treated as a taxable benefit in kind. As a consequence, unless the cost is shown on the employee’s P11d (and the employee pays the tax accordingly) the employer will need to enter into a PAYE settlement agreement with HMRC. The employer will also have a Class 1A (or 1B) NI liability. If the gift comprises non-cash vouchers, the Class 1A NI liability would transfer to a Class 1 NI liability, meaning both employees and employers would be liable. The cost to the employer of providing the vouchers would need to be added to the employee’s gross pay in the pay period that the vouchers were provided, to enable the calculation and deduction of Class 1 NI to be made. Cash presents, such as Christmas bonuses or vouchers redeemable for cash will require tax and NI contributions to be paid through the PAYE system. Finally, if you are considering making Christmas gifts to customers or clients, beware there is a £50 limit in any one Tax Year. The gift must be a business related gift, e,g. a calendar, clock or pen. It must clearly carry an advertisement for your business, otherwise it will be classed as entertainment expenditure and will be disallowed.

Enjoy the party!
