HAMFELDS - DIY HEAVEN! More exciting changes are afoot in Hamfelds of Henfield! Olivia Pugh has been gradually improving and expanding the shop since she took it over November 2011. As well as creating a vastly improved shop layout and stock list, last April she opened the Hamfelds Garden Shop off Coopers Way which has already proved a fantastic success. So when the opportunity of expanding the shop onto the top floor of Brick House came up, Olivia felt it was too good an opportunity to miss. Now, after much knocking down, noise, mess, building and decorating, Hamfelds has a brand new tool and DIY department on the first floor. In addition to a much wider range of power tools (which includes circular saws), the new department also stocks plumbing items, guttering, timber, sand and cement – a real local builders merchants! “I’ve been gradually expanding the tool section over the past couple of years” explained Olivia. “But customers kept asking me if I would stock bigger items. The room upstairs is perfect because it has an access at ground level onto Coopers Way. Customers will be able to load-up their purchases directly from the door or walk them straight over to the public car park.”And if Hamfelds don’t stock the particular tool you are after, they have access to over 30,000 tools on free next-day delivery. “We really want to support the local customer, whether they are a professional tradesperson or a DIYer” said Olivia. “If you order a tool before 5pm we can get it delivered the next day which is faster than the internet and saves you a journey.” Builders and tradespeople can also save 10% by opening a Hamfelds’ account, and help themselves to a fresh cup of coffee whilst they shop from the new Hamfields machine!Described by many as an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ Hamfelds will continue to stock their usual fantastic range of homeware, hardware and gardening items. From batteries to brushes, keys to kettles, torches to timber, seeds to screws and a whole lot more besides, Hamfelds has got the lot and all served with exceptional personal service. Why go anywhere else?

The sun is shining as we send the May issue to the printers and Henfield Cricket Club are working hard to prepare their ground and their players for the coming season. We’ve had so much rain over the winter months that the groundsmen have got their work cut out to get everything ready to go. By the time this issue reaches you the first ball of the season will have been bowled and the wonder-ful sight of cricketers playing on the Common on Sunday afternoon will have heralded the start of summer.

Read more about how you can get involved with your local club on page 22, they are always looking for new members at all levels of the game.

It’s great to see the hard work of the Henfield Club members paying off with the opening of the Don Scutt Memorial Room above the main bar. If you haven’t been to the Club recently you’re in for a pleasant surprise, not to mention the most rea-sonably priced beer in the village!! I met chairman Digby Stephenson to find out more; see page 31.

It’s the Village Evening on 9 May in Henfield Hall. We’ll be there, along with more village clubs and charities than you can shake a stick at. Join us all for a glass of wine and find out more about the or-ganisations you can get involved with in Henfield.

Have a fantastic month, enjoy the spring sunshine and hopefully the sound of leather on willow!

Best wishes

JOIN ST BARNABAS HOUSE FOR A NIGHT TO REMEMBERBack for 2014 and now in its seventh year, join St Barnabas House and hundreds of women for Worth-ing’s annual walk under the stars on Saturday 21 June. Night to Remember is our midnight walk in aid of St Barnabas House, the adult’s hospice for Worth-ing, Adur, Arun and Henfield. We have introduced a brand new challenge for 2014 with a 20 mile route, so ladies can now choose to walk 7, 13.1 or 20 miles through the night! The walk will start at Worthing Lei-sure Centre and registration is £20 per person, which includes a ‘Night Pack’ (our exclusive pink Night to Remember t-shirt, torch and medal), fundraising pack

and refreshments en route. Registration closes on 9 June and you cannot register on the night – so get the girls together now and register to be one of our brightest stars! Please visit www.nighttoremember.org.uk for more information and to register.

HENFIELD FRIENDS OF ST BARNABAS CELEBRATEThe Henfield Friends of St Barnabas celebrated win-ning the BBC ‘Community Heroes’ award nomina-tions last month. They gathered at Henfield Free Church for their annual fundraising ‘bangers and cash’ lunch for villagers which raised more than £200. Chairman Carolyn Phillips said: “We are delighted to receive this recognition for the work we do for St. Barnabas.” BBC Sussex and Surrey judges said: “We have been fuelled with the most reassuring thoughts of how many wonderful people we have in our part of the world.” The Henfield group, which raises funds for St. Barnabas hospice in Worthing, organises vari-ous fundraising events throughout the year, including carol singing, a Christmas craft event, street collec-tions and a cricket match. They are currently looking for more supporters, membership having dwindled to 12 from an original 24. Sponsors of the ‘bangers and cash’ event were Alan Woodward Butchers, Whites Farm Shop, Henfield Budgens and Radmalls Funeral Directors.

YOUTH FOOTBALL TOURNAMENTFor the second consecutive year, Henfield FC is host-ing a Youth Football Tournament on The Kings Field on the week-end of 17-18 May. Over 135 squads have entered – a 25% increase on last year - and many families will be attending. The tournament is run on a group basis, culminating in the finals at the end of each session (around midday and 4pm) on both days. We kick off on Saturday morning with the Under 7s, 9s & 11s; followed by the Under 13s, 15s & 16s in the afternoon. Sunday morning sees the Under 8s & 10s together with the Girls Under 13s playing and the afternoon moves on to the Girls Under 11s, the Under 12s & 14s. We are really grateful to the many local traders that have readily supported the Club by advertising in the 40 page full colour tournament programme or by pro-viding raffle prizes and we hope they too will benefit

As last year, we will have stewards around the immediate area to direct and assist as well as clear directional signage in place for the visiting squads. We apologise though in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused to local residents by the additional street parking and traffic, which we will endeavour to keep to an absolute minimum. Please do come along and support our village’s youth football teams – as they play with pride and passion and no little skill too.Paul Samrah, Secretary Henfield FC

SHOREHAM AIRPORT COMMUNITY MEMORIAL With the closure of the D-Day Museum at Shoreham Airport in 2003 the topsoil, containing pilots ashes, and the rose bushes of the original Garden of Remem-brance were moved to Lancing College Chapel. The existing Memorial, installed by Gerald Spicer in 1997, is now managed and maintained as a public amenity by a voluntary Board of Trustees. The Shoreham Air-port Community Memorial is not registered with the Charity Commission, but is set up with a Small Char-ity Governing Constitution and is managed solely with charitable aims for public benefit. Thanks to generous donations from local compa-nies, individuals and the airport owners and opera-tors the site is being refurbished and improved. The B26 Propeller has been re-installed after removal and overhaul. A paved walkway round the memorial has been laid with wooden planters each side of the south face. Brian Brown’s memorial will be re-sited near the propeller along with a memorial for Don Bean MBE

HTC’S ‘THE CEMETERY CLUB’ Sheila Nye and the Henfield Theatre Company team have delivered a very professional and engaging ren-dering of Ivan Menchell’s ‘The Cemetery Club’. The story is a poignant comedy and parody of the be-reavement of four very different Jewish widows Ida, Doris, Lucille and Mildred. The first three ladies are ostensibly friends and share the post husband experi-ence, but each have their own mantra and manner of coping. The scenes oscillate smoothly between Ida’s comfortable upper middle class living room in Forest Hills in New York, to a corner in a Jewish cemetery with the Brooklyn skyline as a backdrop. Ida, Do-ris and Lucille meet monthly in these two locations, swapping memories and searching for a way for-ward. The arrival of Sam, an uncomplicated widowed Jewish butcher, who also comes to honour his dead wife, in the cemetery, quickly leads to deceit, refined squabbling, teasing and highs and lows of the three widows, revealing their inner desires and truths. With a cast of only five, this is a story with irony, light comedy and human empathy. The acting, accents, timings, stage sets, window view and lighting are top class, almost faultless. American lexicon and clar-ity of speech are perfect. Both sets are atmospheric. Each of the ladies are dressed and coiffed to match their individual characters. Their idiosyncrasies are well portrayed. Mildred is forever showing off her re-cent clothing bargains and wishfully bragging of mul-tiple affairs. Loyal, no-nonsense and frugal Doris re-turns with a doggy bag of food from the wedding, and

large hearted Ida unifies the trio. From the moment of his lumbering entry into the cemetery, Sam comes over as the solid imperturbable Jewish butcher wid-ower. Each scene reaches a high and leads naturally into the next act. It’s great entertainment!Although the subject matter is international, the pro-duction authentically captures the Jewish American culture and one imagines oneself in the cosiness of a Forest Hills home and in the loneliness and isolation of a Jewish cemetery. This is West End material and qual-ity, but available in the comfort and calm of Henfield Village Hall. Well done Henfield Theatre Company!Jean-Pierre & Joan Pirault

LETTER TO THE EDITORSir, in my nineties, living alone and unable to walk after a stroke, my lifeline is a mobility scooter. With it I can get to the shops and meet people. Ageing means the number of us on scooters is growing fast. But yester-day there were 12 advertising A-boards blocking the pavements in our High Street, despite a local byelaw forbidding them. Trivial? No! Accidents will happen if we scooterists are forced to the edge of the path, go an inch too far and topple into the traffic. Both Parish and District Councils say it is not their re-sponsibility to enforce the byelaw and passed the buck to County Highways, to whom I made a formal complaint two weeks ago – but the danger remains. A legless friend last year did get pitched into the road avoiding tree roots; luckily no traffic hit her but I believe it hastened her death. What’s the point of having bylaws if shops and pubs ig-nore them and nobody enforces them?John Davey

KNOW DEMENTIA THANK YOUKnow Dementia wish to say a very big thank you, once again, to those of you who supported the charity last year at the Garden & Arts weekend. The monies raised (over £2,000), are being put towards a year-long programme for younger people diagnosed with dementia and their family caregivers. This will be a programme of activities that will support the families health and well-being. The charity is also working closely with families in Henfield and West Grinstead Parishes to support more of our seniors who have also been diagnosed and both groups and their carers are helping to design programmes that will support everyone. We would also like to say thank you to people from the villages, the choir, Baloos, Lou Beckerman, our Musical Direc-tor and Wayne McConell Director of Brighton Jazz School who have been helping raise money for these events as well. A very successful jazz lunch was held at Baloos recently raising over £700 and Brighton Jazz School’s end of term concert raised over £220. The charity is just developing its group of volunteers and should you wish to help please contact us on 01273 494300 or email [email protected]

As usual, details on all these activities can be found in the iconic blue leaflet available from various outlets in early May. MARATHON RUNNER TRACEY’S DOUBLE CELEBRATIONTracey Prescott from Henfield had a double celebra-tion last month – completing her very first marathon on her birthday. Despite suffering a back problem at mile 18 of the Brighton Marathon she completed the 26.2 miles in just five hours and 38 seconds, raising more than £1,600 for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Tracey is general manager of Peewees, the Burgess Hill and Brighton hairdress-ers, and she was running in support of friend Gary Dunk who has been under-going cancer treatment. “It was tough towards the end but I had the support, en-couragement and advice of my sister Sam Bremner and experienced mara-thon runner Ilidia Campbell who is doing the London Marathon” said Tracey. Her next challenge is on 10 May in a 20-mile ‘Rat Race’ obstacle course at Burghley House, Lincoln-

shire, for Cancer Research UK. Donations accepted at www.777fundraising.com Mike Beardall

HART’S THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE – JUNE 2014 It seems an age ago that we did our training walk in Snowdonia and the Challenge is now just round the corner – 12 weeks away in fact! The Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snow-don) within 24 hours. The team consists of eight walkers and three drivers / cooks and training has been taking place each weekend, with Chanctonbury Ring, Wolstonbury and Devils Dyke all playing a mas-sive part in building up the leg muscles! We are incredibly lucky to be supported by The White Hart, Sean Preston and GSFW Solicitors who between them will cover the costs of the Challenge amounting to approximately £2,000. This means that any spon-sorship the Team receives will go directly to the vol-untary responder groups HART and PART (one of the walkers is from the Partridge Green Area Response Team) and this is where we would like to look to you.Sponsor forms will be spread around the village and we would be grateful for any support you can give us. Funds raised will be used to secure HART’s future and for the maintenance of the PADs (public access defibrillators) held in the village. HART’S 10 respond-ers each carry a defibrillator and there are 19 PADs spread around the village. This means that hopefully not one of you is more than five minutes away from these life-saving pieces of equipment. Anne Dewdney

NIGHTINGALES SINGING FOR SURVIVALWildlife experts are warning that plans to build on a Nightingale ‘hotspot’ near Henfield will destroy ir-replaceable habitat and leave many endangered or declining species of birds with nowhere to go. May-field Market Towns wants to build 10,000 new homes at Wineham on site well known locally for its birdlife. LAMBS (Locals Against Mayfield Building Sprawl) is holding ‘Sight and Sound Birdwatch’ to catalogue the species living there.Helen Crabtree from the British Trust for Ornithology says the site is an important spot for wildlife. “The area in question has some fantastic habitat for wildlife and for birds in particular,” she says. “Not only are Night-ingales relatively abundant in the hedges and copses, but there are breeding Skylarks, Yellowhammers, Lin-nets and sometimes Lapwings. These are all farm-land birds that are suffering declines in Sussex.” The Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Adult learning Manager, Mike Russell agrees: “It is a mosaic of habitats,” he says. “You’ve got the upper echelons of the Adur coming through here, so you’ve got water meadows, you’ve got running water, you’ve got small ponds, you’ve still got a network of hedges – the removal of hedgerows has been one of the major losses of habitats for some species - you’ve got small woodlands and you’ve got agricultural areas. So it’s a real mixture of habitats in a fairly confined area and that gives it a lot of diversity.”Val Bentley from the Sussex Ornithological Society

has been surveying Nightingales in the area since the 1990s. She says that the UK’s Nightingale popula-tion has shrunk dramatically over the past 30 years, and Wineham is a ‘hotspot’. “It is an excellent area for Nightingales because there is quite a lot of exactly what they want,” she says. “They seem to prefer Blackthorn scrub – in particular Blackthorn scrub near running water; and there are plenty of both around here. With so much building going on, these areas that are still relatively untouched are becoming the most important sites for this particular species.” If you want to take part in Wineham’s ‘Sight and Sound Birdwatch’ please visit lambs.org.uk or email [email protected]

RUSHFIELDS PLANT CENTRE GETS HART LIFESAVING MACHINERushfields Plant Centre in Poynings has received a heart defibrillator from HART. The AED (Automated

External Defibrillator) will be used in the case of a cardiac arrest and around 40 staff will be trained in its use. Rushfields director Kathryn Hillman said: “With 300 people a day coming through our doors it is vital that we have the equipment and the knowledge to deal with a cardiac emergency.” HART co-ordinator Dave Fletcher said: “The presence of a defibrillator gives staff some reassurance that they can deal with a cardiac emergency while waiting for a paramedic and responder to arrive. Everyone should have some basic training in resuscitation techniques.”

SEAGULLS SWOOP FOR JANSEN!Local Henfield boy, Jansen Lee, has been signed by Brighton and Hove Albion Academy football team at U12 level for an undisclosed fee. 12 year old Jansen was originally signed by QPR at the age of 9, but Brighton finally brought him from the London club, despite QPR not wanting to let him go, after the two teams met last November. He was invited to the Brighton v QPR game by the Head of the Academy to officially sign for the club on 11 March.

Jansen, who is currently on a sports scholarship at Ar-dingly College, is now training four times a week with the Academy who are hoping to obtain Category One status in the coming weeks - that is the highest rat-ing for a professional football academy and coincides with a move to their £30million new academy train-ing ground in Lancing this summer. After two years of training three times a week in London, Jansen is set to join the academies ‘day release’ programme in

IS YOUR CRYING INFANT DRIVING YOU CRAZY?The Chiropractic for Infants with Colic (CHIC) study is free and may be helpful. The most common condition paediatric chiropractors see is infantile colic, this is also the most common complaint that is seen by doc-tors in the first 16 weeks of life. This is a problem char-acterised by excessive crying and can be distressing, not only for the baby, but also for the mother and can disrupt family life.Clinical experience shows that chiropractic can be useful in helping these babies, however, in an effort to provide robust evidence to support this, Madeleine Brzeski, our paediatric chiropractor is taking part in a nationwide research project, approved by The Uni-versity of Southampton’s School of Medicine. Babies aged up to three months who are enrolled on the study will be given three chiropractic treatments free of charge, parents will be expected to keep a ‘cry-ing diary’ and to answer five minutes of questions by telephone, once a week for five weeks.Go to www.Colicstudy.org or call 01746 802080 to find out more. For further information about the Hen-field part of the study visit www.paddockshealthcare.co.uk and click on ‘Infant Colic’. PONIES-N-KIDS SPRING SHOW’S A SUNNY SUCCESS It wasn’t only the sun that was smiling at the annual Ponies n Kids Spring Jumping Show, plenty of riders were too. Held on Sunday 9 March in glorious sun-shine, a fun time was had by all whilst raising money for St Catherine’s Hospice. Classes were split into led and non-led categories and the Novice event saw Tayla triumph on Twinkle and Harriet on Daisy who both did double clear-rounds. Second (led) was Annie on Twinkle with Sophie on Sir Edward Bear coming third. Second in the non-led was Nicola on Twinkle and third, Zerena on Sir Edward Bear. The Intermedi-ate class was very close between the top three led ponies who were Annie on Twinkle, Tayla on Daisy

and Beth on Barbie. In the non-led section the winner was Olivia on Daisy followed by Zerena on Sir Edward Bear and Mille on Barbie.Show organisers and owners of Ponies and Kids rid-ing stables Nan and Lucinda Langhorne praised the performance of the children and their ponies and extended heartfelt thanks to all you helped make the day a success “We’ve all had a wonderful morning and it’s great to see the children put what they learn during their lessons into practice in a fun, competitive environment” Lucinda said. “We would like to thank Keith from Convenience Corner for providing us with snacks, Julian Portch for his wonderful photography, Hannah for all her hard work and especially Nicola Stern for judging and time keeping” She added. £150 was raised on the day for St Catherines which will be donated to remember Brian Stern, Nicola’s husband and Henfield resident, who passed away recently and benefited from the wonderful service the Hospice pro-vides.

DAYCARE CENTRE UNDER THREAT OF CLOSUREHenfield Day Care Centre in Hewitts is under threat of closure by West Sussex County Council.A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “We are planning to consult on how day services will be provided at Henfield in the future and no decision has been made. Should the decision be taken to close the building we will look to find alternatives for the custom-ers. Another option is to look to find another organisa-tion to run the service from the Henfield Day Centre.”There are serious concerns being voiced by rela-tives and carers of local users of the Centre, which has been called a ‘lifeline’ for some dementia patients who have no other place to go.The consultation document however states that the Centre has been unable to achieve anticipated oc-cupancy since the implementation of the new model of specialised day service provision with the average occupancy at 16.6%, costing £210 per place per day. In 2011 the Council moved away from multi-purpose day centres towards specialist focussed provision, meaning a drop in numbers of qualifying users. There is a consultation meeting being held at The Steyning Centre at 7pm on 28 April where there will be a presentation on the proposed options. A copy of the report is available from www.westsussex.gov.uk/your_council/meetings_and_decision-making/executive_decisions.aspx. Search under the date 14 February to find the document.

For all the clichés about cricket being a typically ‘English’ sport, for me there are few things that herald the arrival of an English summer more than

seeing village cricket being played in a rural setting. And Henfield Cricket Club can lay claim to having seen more summers than most being one of the oldest clubs in the world. The first recorded cricket match took place in Hen-field in 1721 and Henfield Cricket Club was formed 50 years later in 1771. Despite its ups and downs over the past 243 years, the Club is today a thriving and modern 21st century club. During 2013 the Club fielded eight teams with 93 players and played 141 games. With such as fantastic season under their belts, they are looking forward to an even more successful 2014 season. This year sees the first XI of the Senior Men’s playing in Division 4 West of the Sus-sex Cricket League. The team is relatively young with an average age of 22. Some of the players have developed through the ranks of the Colts, having played for Henfield since their early teens. The Club also runs a league sec-ond XI and a third XI (who were champions in their league last year) on Saturday as well as two Sunday sides. The Women’s first XI has only been playing for three seasons but already they are flourishing. Last year they played in the Sussex League and were runners-up in the Santander T20 (West) division. For 2014 they have set their sights on the challenge of the Southern League, as well as the SWCA Santander 20/20 league. The club is proud to have achieved Clubmark status which means they have demonstrated that they run their youth cricket programme to the tough standards demanded by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). They have a strong Colts section for young cricketers and this year they are playing in the U15, U13, U11 and U10 age groups in the SCN South Area League. The Club has also put together a new acad-emy for the U8’s. As well as the Club based activities, Henfield Cricket Club also offers coaching to local primary schools and hosts a Primary School Cricket Tournament.

Of course, as with much local and amateur sport, Henfield Cricket Club is very reliant on the generos-ity of local firms to sponsor them. This year the club is delighted to announce that Eyesite Opticians are sponsoring their shirts for three seasons. They have an ongoing partnership with the White Hart and they are also pleased to be working with Get Fit fitness training who is helping to get the team’s fitness levels match-ready. This year, in addition to the regular fundraising, Hen-field Cricket Club also has a project to redevelop the practice nets facility which has been well used over the years. The total cost of replacing the nets is around £30k, of which £20-23k is being provided

through grants. The Club is looking to raise the remain-ing £7-8k by the end of this season so that the work on the installation of the new nets can take place over the autumn, ready for next year. But it’s not all hard work and no play! From quiz nights and Mexican food evenings to the summer party and an-nual dinner and with plenty in between, the club mem-bers are a very sociable bunch, both on and off the

pitch, as their busy social calendar testifies. And the Club, with its fantastic location on Henfield Common surrounded by beautiful woodland, is quite a draw for those wanting to watch club cricket: on match days during the summer months the boundary-side parking is often full of spectators who come from far and wide with their picnics hampers and deck-chairs.The Club welcomes new members, both playing and social, of all ages. If you would like to get involved in any way, please contact Peter Boyce via email at [email protected] or call 07736 315904.Sarah Butler

The Club has a limited number of roadside sponsorship opportunities still available and if you would like to take advantage of one of these, or support the redevelopment of the net facility, please contact Peter Boyce on 07736 315904.

Every year at BN5 magazine we open our doors to a work placement student for a week during the summer months. The students, who come from

local sixth form colleges, all have an interest in writing, publishing or media. We enjoy showing them how we work, setting them projects and feeding off their energy and enthusiasm. We hope that they leave at the end of the week a little bit more knowledgeable about the pub-lishing industry and hopefully inspired to further their career development.Last summer, Henfield student Amy Johnston came to us from Brighton and Hove Sixth Form College (BHASVIC). Amy is keen to pursue a career in politics that we recommended her to local MP Nick Herbert for a work shadowing opportunity. This is what hap-pened next in Amy’s words:“Despite being confident in my understanding of po-litical mechanisms both in the UK and the USA, my knowledge of politics on a local scale is limited. To be able to pursue politics at degree level and decide on a potential career path in this field, I felt that some first hand experience shadowing my member of par-liament was needed to give a clearer insight into con-stituency matters. To arrange this, I got in contact with Nick’s constituency assistant via email before going to meet her to discuss her involvement with con-stituents and local businesses through visits, meet-ings and surgeries. Her passion and dedication was inspiring, and she presented me with an opportunity to spend some time at Westminster on International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to a greater awareness of women’s equality.

First I went on a tour around 10 Downing Street with a group of about 12 other girls who had also been in-vited by their members of parliament. This was a great privilege and sitting around the cabinet table where so many significant decisions have been made in the past is a memory that will stay with me forever. We were also guided around the Prime minister’s gardens and various rooms upstairs including where David Cameron has his private, informal meetings and his dining room. Then we went to Portcullis House where Nick’s PA and his research team talked me through their roles and how they ended up working for Nick. When Nick arrived at lunch I was able to talk to him in a casual environment before he accompanied me to a debate where he explained how debates work and pointed out various aspects of the chamber. It was extremely exciting to see the House of Com-mons for the first time especially with Nick next to me to answer all my questions. Then I had a detailed tour starting at Westminster Hall where I was able to see some committee rooms as well as a thorough expla-nation of the history. Finally, we went to the speaker’s house which was very grand and John Bercow him-self was present, he gave a speech along with influen-tial women including female MP’s and those success-ful in business. This experience taught me that having a career in politics does not necessarily mean becoming an MP; there are so many roles involved in making constituency matters run smoothly on a more local level, which is something I may think about perusing in the future.”

Many will know of the Henfield Club through its association with the Remembrance parade and War Memorial in Cagefoot Lane at the

Club. The member’s support of the annual commemora-tion of local men who gave their lives in the conflicts is well recognised – they keep the War Memorial pris-tine and host a reception for the ex-soldiers and parade members each year. You may have attended their annual ‘Pumpkin Com-petition’ – a lively event with stalls, a band and a bar-beque in Cagefoot Lane, with prizes for the largest or the most uniquely decorated pumpkin. Both of these events embody the spirit of the club; community. The club is welcoming more and more families, it has cast off it’s reputation of being ‘only for the men’ and you’ll find plenty of people enjoy-ing drinks in the welcoming and cosy bar, or playing snooker on two of the finest tables to be found locally. There’s a lively and friendly banter, this is a real ‘locals’ bar, but if you are new to the village you will be just as welcome, you might just learn a thing or two about Henfield! The Club is undergoing even more changes, the latest is a bright and sunny Meeting Room. Directly above the main bar, the room has large windows with views up and down the High Street. Light streams in from three aspects and the tall ceilings make the space airy and inviting. Digby Stephenson, Club Chairman, explained more. “The room was partly for storage so we took down the partition which gave us more light and another window. It’s been a lot of hard work by members and local builders, but it’s worth it. The club was originally called The Comrades of the Great War Club, it was

formed by local men returning from the Great War. This same comradeship continues and this new room for the community is in the same spirit.”The walls have been painted very appropriately in ‘Poppy Red’ and it’s been furnished with very com-fortable chairs. The room fits up to 34 people with several configurations, and a nice large wall is ready for screens and projectors. Free wifi is also avail-able making it perfect for business meetings, with a downstairs bar available for refreshments this is a useful, centrally located venue. Local artist Kenneth McIntosh is curating the room as a gallery space – his landscapes and seascapes sit beautifully in the after-noon light. He is looking forward to encouraging other local artists to exhibit their work at the club. One of the Club’s longest serving and well loved members passed away earlier this year. Don Scutt, who joined the Club just after the war, took his turn in most positions on the committee – chairman, presi-dent, secretary and even behind the bar! Don is sorely missed, sadly he is not here to see the room which has been named in his honour in use. His friends, family and members of the committee know that he would have been very proud to see such a lovely space used for the benefit of Henfield people. The Henfield Club Don Scutt Memorial Room is avail-able for hire for £9.50ph for the first hour and £7.50ph thereafter. Club Membership is a bargain £10 single, £15 couple and £5 OAP. If your group comprises of more than 50% Club Members then your room hire is completely free. The Henfield Club, Cagefoot Lane, BN5 9HD 07864 023171 [email protected] Osman

Going back to work after having a baby can be quite a challenging time, especially for first time mums. This is something that Laura Mills at Oscar Bear’s can relate to entirely. As well as managing the ‘Cbabiesafe’ nursery in Hove and having 10 years experience in childcare, she is a mum herself; to a lively and chattering two year old.

“Creating the right environment which is stimulating as well as homely and comforting is key to happy children,” said Laura. “We are entirely child-led with our free-flow education and development, but parent-led with our flexibility. We open from 7.30am – 7pm so we can fit in with parent’s work routines. For example, we can supply a wholesome breakfast for children who arrive early in their jim-jams meaning you don’t have to rush a reluctant child to eat while you are hurrying to get to work on time! Being a working parent can be very stressful so we do our best to make life a lot simpler and create more quality time for parents.”

Oscar Bear’s is situated in some converted farm buildings on the Albourne road just outside Henfield. Although the room is open plan so that children are free to explore, each room is interlinked and can be separated for quieter activities. The baby room has a cosy ‘sleep area’ with dimmed lights and there is an area for meals and more messy play. Large windows look out to the partly decked garden, where children whizz around on scooters and trikes. “We chose this location partly for the lovely countryside, it’s great for welly walks and we don’t need to go near a road,” said Laura. “There’s plenty of parking and we’re situated on one of the main routes out of Henfield so we are convenient for commuting parents.”

The nursery can accommodate up to 24 children from age 0-5, including eight babies. They are open Monday – Friday for 51 weeks of the year apart from bank holidays. The children enjoy delicious hot lunches supplied from Partridge Green’s The Easy Lunch Company and for children staying later there is a high tea of something warming in the winter months, like scrambled eggs on toast.

The staff at Oscar Bear’s are fully trained to NVQ level 3 and above, fully CRB checked with paediatric first aid certificates. They work closely with West Sussex Children’s Services; Laura has strong links with them after working on their Family Outreach projects and mobile toy library.

The children enjoy a gentle ‘settling in’ process, including visits accompanied by a parent or carer, slowly building up to a full session. Each visit happens at a different time of day so the children experience lunchtimes, sleep times and playtimes. “Part of our parental contact will be our new online portal ‘Baby Days’ which allows parents to log on and see what their children are doing, with photographs, lunch menus, activities and infor-mation,” said Laura. “It’s not just the children who need to settle in, the parents need to feel comfortable that they are leaving their precious child in a safe environment and that they will be looked after with love and care.”

For more information contact Laura Mills, Oscar Bear’s Day Care, Unit 4, Firsland Studios, Hen-field Road, Albourne BN6 9JJ. Call 01273 494077 or find us online www.oscarbear.co.uk.

This summer Laura Mills and the rest of the staff at Oscar Bears Day Care will be preparing their four year olds for all-the important transition to primary school. As well as looking forward to the new and exciting adventures the children will have at school, they will also be celebrating all the fun things they have done at Oscar Bears Day Care over the past two years.

The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage and is entirely child-led in terms of the free-flow education and development. As well as the usual messy play, welly walks and teddy bears picnics, the children have also been taking part in some more adventurous activities such as: growing caterpillars into butterflies; regular yoga sessions; making their own fruit smoothies and milk shakes; incubating hen’s eggs until they hatch; and touching the visiting Zoolab mini-beasts. “The children were definitely braver than the staff when it came to touching the snake!” laughed Laura.

As a small, family run nursery Laura and her team are able to offer the flexibility which is so important to busy

working parents. They are open from 7.30pm to 7pm Monday to Friday for 51 weeks of the year (they only close for a week at Christmas and on bank holidays). Laura will also try to accommodate flexible childcare requests where possible. The cost is all inclusive so everything, including the wholesome hot meals, nappies, wipes and all activities, is all included in the price – just another way in which Laura and her team are making life simpler for parents.

They have a fabulous location just off the Henfield Road in Albourne which is perfect, both for access to the lovely countryside for the children and access to the commuter links for working parents. The family room is a bright and cheerful purpose-built environment designed to enhance the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of each child, ensuring that their individual needs are met.

Here children are able to independently explore the environment whilst learning valuable educational skills. The baby room has been especially designed to provide a safe and stimulating environment that encourages exploration and investigation through play. The nursery also benefits from a separate sleep room which provides babies with a quiet sanctuary at nap time. All the staff are fully trained to NVQ level 3 or above and are fully CRB checked with paediatric first aid certificates.

Laura prides herself on the warm family environment she and her staff have created at the nursery and the fact that staff-turnover is non-existent. “Parents tell us how their children love coming to Oscar Bears and how they see it as an extension to their family – that makes me really happy as it’s the best praise we can have” said Laura. “We will be quite sad to say goodbye to our school leavers, but we are very much looking forward to welcoming new babies and children into our family!”

The Trefoil Guild, named after the three-leafed Guiding emblem, are a busy and friendly group of ladies who meet on the third Tuesday of the

month in the Henfield Guide Hut, tucked away down Staples Barn Road. The group is all about companion-ship and keeping the shared values of the Guiding or-ganisation alive – helping others and supporting the local Guiding groups.I met the group one evening as they prepared for the forthcoming celebrations of 100 years of Guid-ing. Each Trefoil Guild group had been set a series of challenges, all of which had been completed over the past year. The ladies were creating a long and colour-ful strand of bunting with each challenge crafted and illustrated on each flag, to symbolize what the group had achieved. The Trefoil Guild is formed of ex-Guides and leaders, although if you’ve never been part of the organisation you’re still very welcome. One member, Anne Adams, had never been a Guide – so she took her promise in a ceremony last year and then promptly enrolled in the Trefoil Guild on the same evening. Many of the la-dies were not only Guides but had been leaders in the past. The Guild often give a helping hand to the local Guide groups (there are currently two Rainbow packs, two Brownie packs and two Guide packs. Finding vol-unteers, especially when the girls go on pack camp or on trips out when higher ratios of volunteers are need-ed, is especially hard.) The help of the Trefoil Guild is invaluable in keeping Guiding alive locally – currently there is a waiting list of girls eager to join but a severe lack of leader volunteers. In 1979 the Henfield branch held their first meeting. Since then they’ve enjoyed trips to see gardens, walks, tea parties, film shows, picnics, theatre visits and more camp-fires than they can remember. Two of the founding members still attend – Mary Holder and Win Saunders. One member, Anne Collins, said; “I didn’t realise what I was capable of until I became

The ‘Promise’ and the spirit of Guiding has helped me and I have formed great friendships through the group.”Trefoil member Jane Brown was honoured last year with the highest award in Guiding – the Silver But-terfly, for her services to the organisation. That’s many, many hours of running Brownie Packs and Guide Groups, as well as a stint as County Secretary, bringing fun, opportunities and invaluable life-skills to countless young girls. Many went on to complete their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and gained confidence

There have been some changes at Selectacarpet over the years – but we’re still offering the same fantastic service!

SELECTACARPET – at your service!

The thing most of our customers notice is the obvious change in the colour of my hair since our last picture in BN5!

We have been in business for 18 years, Selectacarpet is truly a family affair. I learnt about carpet fitting from the best teacher in the business – my dad Brian; I fitted my first carpet with him when I was just eight years old! He has been fitting flooring since before I was born. He has fitted at the smallest house in England (only 6 foot wide!) and has even fitted carpets for royalty at Buckingham Palace.

I am proud to say that my family has grown over the last five years. Linsey and I were married at St Peter’s Church in Henfield by the lovely Revd Angela, if you

saw Linsey waiting it was because I was late to our wedding! We then had our fantastic son Noah who was also christened by Revd Angela. Noah is now three and growing fast! We have moved three times, from Hurst to Cuckfield and now Burgess Hill and we’ll be moving again soon!

You have probably seen our huge Selectacarpet van with all of us in it as I drive around locally to our cus-tomers. Linsey with Noah in the passenger seat seem to get the most attention rather than my shocking hair these days! We have all our samples on board, as choosing the carpet in your house is really important to get the colours right. If you can’t find the colour you want we can get it custom made for you too.

This is a very popular time of year for running, with almost everyone having just run a mara-thon! Discussions about carb-loading and taper-

ing make the rest of us feel lazy, but there is no need to panic. Before learning to run, we learnt to walk, and ac-tually, walking delivers all the benefits of running, while being a lot kinder to our knees. Not only is walking better for your joints, but it is also simple to do and, when done regularly, has been shown to reduce the risk of developing chronic ill-nesses such as Type 2 diabetes, asthma, strokes and some forms of cancer. Amazingly, half an hour of brisk walking (4 mph) can shift 150 calories. But before you relax in your comfy chair, smug that you have already done your 30 minutes on the school run, it has to be the right kind of walking! The NHS recommends aiming for 10,000 steps a day. This may sound like a lot, but you are probably already clocking up 3,000-4,000 steps. Try using a pedometer to work out your daily average, then gradually build more steps into your daily routine - an additional ten minutes of brisk walking will add 1,000 steps to your daily total. To achieve the anticipated benefits you must be walking at a moderate intensity, i.e. faster than a stroll. However, it’s not just the amount of walking we do that is important, but how we do it. Quite simply, the vast majority us walk wrong, using the wrong muscles in the wrong way and at the wrong time. This can

To develop the ideal walking posture you need to build strength from the inside out. By aligning the body properly, posture is corrected and movement becomes more fluid while discomfort such as back pain lessens. Walking is a brilliant way to look after your heart, safeguard your joints whilst improving your posture, stamina, confidence and strengthening your back, legs and bottom. In the past week I have had the misfortune of having to take my new baby into hos-

pital because he wasn’t well. No sympathy required – he is fine now, but during the few days he was in, I noticed a poster adver-tising the services of the Sussex

PAT dogs which caused me to think about how effective our pets can be at solving our fears and woes. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved – even if the re-cipient of the problem has a waggy tail and a wet nose!In my more recent predicament, I have to be honest and say our menagerie didn’t do much to help reduce my stress levels. I came back one night from the hos-pital to find cat vomit encased in a cocoon of ginger fur on the stairs courtesy of Feargal, who has the dubious honour of being our fluffiest cat. The following evening the dogs, who were suffering from hyperactivity as a result of lack of exercise, were particularly excitable due to a mouse running riot in the downstairs loo. Fear-gal was again suspect number one for letting his prey escape and having to catch the mouse at 11.30 in the evening didn’t assist my sense of humour. However, in general I do believe that pets definitely have an important role to play in helping improve our outlook when things aren’t going well. Whether this is just lifting the spirits a little on a low day or helping someone who is lonely or depressed. Without getting too deep and meaningful there is something uplifting about caring for an animal that provides uncondi-tional love and doesn’t suffer from any of the emo-tional stresses and strains that many people have to endure. Owning a pet provides a pleasant diversion from the troubles of everyday life and personally I find it hard not to relax when there is cat purring on my lap (until a fur-ball is hooked-up, that is!)For those who aren’t fortunate enough to own their own pet but who would benefit from the positives that come with contact from one, ‘PAT’ dogs and cats ex-ist! PAT stands for Pets as Therapy which is a charity founded to facilitate contact between sick, lonely, de-spondent or unhappy people and a happy relaxed pet. “They provide therapeutic visits to hospitals, hospic-

Paws for thoughtes, nursing and care homes, special needs schools and a variety of other venues by volunteers with their own friendly, temperament tested and vaccinated dogs and cats”*. PAT dog and cat visits provide peo-ple with the pleasure of contact with a happy animal and brings everyday life closer - these benefits cannot be underestimated. The charity is always looking for new PAT dogs and cats. All potential applicants have to pass tests to make sure that they have the right temperament and are suitable for the important job in hand. Owning a PAT dog or cat can be just as rewarding as receiving the ‘therapy’ and if you are interested in registering your pet, then contact details for the charity can be found on their website – www.petsastherapy.org So, while I don’t think that any psychiatrists out there need to be worried about being out of a job, we should never underestimate the positive role that having a pet in your life can provide. Yes, a dog poop on the kitchen floor first thing in the morning does test the patience but these minor indiscretions are far out-weighed by all the good times. Next time your pet is in the bad books, maybe it’s time to cut him or her some slack – unless it’s the fourth mouse in the house that day of course!Jonathan Underwood, Hawthorn Vets*Reference from www.petsastherpay.org

DOUBLE CELEBRATIONS AT RED OAKS

For further information please call us on 01273 493043or visit www.barchester.com/redoaks

April was time for double celebrations at Red Oaks. Another group of our dedicated staff were awarded their Long Service Awards.

The seven staff, mainly care and nursing team have collectively amassed 110 amazing years’ service. These awards fell at the same time as National Nutrition Week, so we held a Celebratory Tea Party combining the two. This gave new chef Leigh Clifford a chance to show off some of his skills and knowledge, as he and his team created nutritional sandwiches, canapés, freshly made cakes, specialist teas and smoothies. Nutrition Week is a worldwide event focusing on resident dietary needs, for example, likes, dislikes and allergies, as well as menu standards, snacks and fortified meals.

Long Service Award Winners: left to rightJulie, Jo, Karen, Jennifer,Anita and Gulhanim.

May 12th is International Nurses Day and to further show our appreciation to the nursing staff, not only here at Red Oaks but also in the local community, we are going to be holding a special day for them all.Special invites have been sent to them to attend a free day of pampering, beauty treatments, massage and lovely food and drinks. We have previously hosted a group of Polish beauty and masseuse students, and due to the success of that visit we were delighted to be asked to host two further groups this year. The students stay with us at Red Oaks and spend time practising their new found skills on the residents and staff. The first group enjoyed themselves so much that several of them have returned to work with us during the summer holidays.Any local nurses who would like to make the most of this wonderful opportunity should contact Red Oaks to book a place.

Dementia Awareness Week begins on Monday 19th May and we will be holding a coffee morning at 10.30 on Thursday 22nd May followed at midday by a Round Table discussion. These have proved really popular in the past and people are encouraged to come along and join in.

We are currently seeking new care staff and senior carers. Experience not necessary. Please call for further information.

Is There More to Massage Than Just Relaxation?

Not feeling your best and not sure why? Might be time to detox. You don’t have to go on a detox diet or drink special smoothies to detox. Start with a massage to kick-start your body’s own natural cleansing processes, which can slow down for a variety of reasons — lack of regular exercise, too little fluids or fibre in the diet … If you haven’t been taking the best care of yourself, a detoxifying massage can help set things right again.

How does massage help the body detox, exactly? The rhythmic strokes and pressure applied to muscles, tissues and organs during massage therapy help stimulate the circulatory system. It works sort of like a sponge: When pressure is applied to the tissue and fat, toxins are literally “squeezed” out from in between the muscle fibres and cells. They are released into the circulatory system for easier elimination. The lymph system is keyYour lymphatic fluid system works with your cardiovascular circulatory system to flush out toxins and carry immune cells throughout the body to help defend against infections. If your lymph fluid circulation gets sluggish, toxins can accumulate and immune cells may not get carried to the areas of the body where they’re needed.

Since the lymph system doesn’t have a big central pump like the heart to keep things moving, it has to rely on gravity, exercise, breathing … and massage. So if you haven’t been as good as you should about your exercise, diet and “me time” routine (it happens to the best of us!), that can affect how you feel, causing aches, pains and swelling (lymph edema). It can also cause deterioration in organs and glands, like the thymus, that are vital players in your immune system. It’s easy to see why detoxification is important to avoiding illness and chronic health conditions. So if you’re not feeling your best or haven’t been as good about your diet and exercise routine lately, why not book a massage with Heather to get you back on track?Remember to drink a glass or two of pure water after massage to help the body flush out toxins more rapidly.

Should you cash in your pension to buy a property?

for around £600 per month. If we assume you don’t pay an agent and do all the management work and tenant finding yourself, never have a month without a tenant nor a repair bill to pay that gives you £7,200 per year. Of course the income is taxable so, assum-ing you’re a basic rate tax payer. You are left with after tax income of £5,760, or a net yield on your starting amount after tax 2.88%. To make things even worse you are now dependent on the fortunes of one person (or maybe two if rent to a couple) for your entire non-state retirement income. If they lose their job you likely lose your income too!Compared to a diversified portfolio of bonds, shares and property held through a pension and with the income drawn tax efficiently through “phased draw-down” cashing in your pension and buying a property may easily be the biggest financial mistake you could make.Richard Cohen, FPFS, Chartered Financial PlannerNsure Financial Services provide independent financial advice. Following the budget there has been a lot of talk

around the increased flexibility that is to be in-troduced around how you can take your pension benefits. I’ve heard a

number of people say “At last - I will be able to cash my pension in and buy a property to fund my retirement”. Quite why anyone would want to do this is beyond me. Let’s assume after April 2015 someone has a fund of £200,000. You can have 25% tax free with the re-mainder being added to your income in the year or years that you take it. If you took the whole £150,000 in one go, you are going to lose your personal allow-ance, meaning some of that income is taxed at 60% and if you have any other income at all some of it will be taxed at the additional rate of 45%. However, you plan carefully, take the income over a couple of tax years and only pay 40% tax on the income. This means you are left with £90,000 from the taxable por-tion, which leaves a total fund after tax of £140,000. Then you find a property to buy, remember you’ve got stamp duty and solicitors fees to pay so realistically you can buy something in the £135-£138,000 brack-et. Locally that buys you a one bed flat that will rent

Savers, doers and makers celebrateThe Chancellor of the

Exchequer’s latest Budget was, he said,

“one for savers, doers and makers”. The intention was to encourage growth in busi-nesses, particularly small but

fast-growing companies, and to reward savers who have seen their returns cut sharply as interest rates remain low. Unusually for Budget Day, the speech contained one or two previously unannounced surprises. One of the biggest was the Government’s plans to re-form the pension regime, and particularly the removal of the limit on the amount that can be withdrawn from pensions as this effectively means that anyone over the age of 55 will be able, from April 2015, to withdraw their entire pension fund as cash. As before, only the first 25% will be tax free, but the remainder will be taxed only at the individual’s normal marginal rate rather at the current rate of 55%. This creates a number of opportunities for individuals to draw the entire balance of their pension fund at nor-mal tax rates and then invest their funds outside of the regulation of a pension fund and without the need to purchase an annuity. While the move does allow people to take more re-sponsibility for the money they have saved whilst working and makes pensions more attractive, it also increases the potential for confusion so it will become more important than ever to take good professional advice before and on retirement.Business taxesThe main announcements affecting businesses in-cluded an extension of the Annual Investment Allow-ance to include capital expenditure incurred on plant and machinery. For expenditure after 1 April 2014, the maximum annual amount will be increased from £250,000 to £500,000 until 31 December 2015. This is a welcome extension of the scheme and will be a boost for capital-intensive businesses. It should mean that most SMEs will be able to write off 100% of their capital expenditure on plant for tax purposes. The Chancellor also announced changes to Corpora-tion Tax relief for SMEs that invest in qualifying R&D. At the moment, SMEs can obtain a deduction in Cor-poration Tax for 225% of the amount they spend. If the company is making losses it is possible to surrender the R&D deductions (or the loss if smaller) for an 11% Corporation Tax repayment. This will be increased to 14.5% for qualifying expenditure from April 2014, in-creasing the rate of the cash credit payable to SMEs that carry out R&D but do not have Corporation Tax liabilities. Many SMEs find R&D tax credits very help-ful and this change is a positive one. The Chancellor added that he also plans to extend the popular Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme.

The SEIS was initially introduced for a temporary pe-riod and gives investors who buy shares in qualifying companies Income Tax relief at 50% of the amount invested. This will now become a permanent relief and should help smaller and early stage businesses who are looking for equity funding.Individual taxationThe best news in the Chancellor’s speech was re-served for savers. Mr Osborne announced that the annual investment limit for ISAs will be increased from £11,520 to £15,000, and also announced that cash and stocks and shares ISAs will be merged, which means that all of the £15,000 can be invested in cash (previously, only half of the maximum allowance could be held in cash). The maximum holding limit for Pre-mium Bonds will also be increased, to £40,000 in June 2014 and to £50,000 in 2015.Pensioners looking for a better return on their savings welcomed the announcement that a new Pensioners’ Bond will be launched in January 2015, which will of-fer a competitive interest rate for the over-65s. The investment limit, though, will be set at £10,000.Anti-avoidanceThe Chancellor continued his battle against tax avoid-ance with the announcement that anyone who is a participant in a scheme that has been ‘notified’ by HMRC will have to pay the disputed tax up front, and will only recover it (with interest) if and when the legal process is concluded in the taxpayer’s favour. This is intended to address HMRC’s belief that some taxpay-ers use marketed schemes to ‘park’ the eventual li-ability, in some cases for years. For full details on all the announcements, see our website, www.kingstonsmith.co.uk/budget-2014Paul SamrahFor further advice on this or other business issues, contact Paul Samrah on 01737 781546 or email [email protected]
