We are feeling really, really Christmassy here in the BN5 office. Sarah has spent so much time researching where to get the best mince pies and festive decorations she’s managed to enthuse us all (and remind us to get going on the shopping!). Our Keep Christmas Local article on page 24, 25 and 26 will give you some ideas about how to take the stress out of shopping this Christmas, while supporting local shops, producers and crafts people at the same time.

We’ve got some lovely events happening around the village this Christmas. There’s the annual High Street Spirit of Christmas evening, where you’ll find Father Christmas, carol singers and plenty of mulled wine and mince pies to get the festivities off to a flying start. There’s also the Nativity Sheep Trail for those who are a little younger, see if you can find all the charming knitted sheep hidden around the village.

We’re very much looking forward to Henfield’s first Living Advent - at the time of going to press we don’t have dates and venues yet, but there will be plenty of exciting things happening around the village on each day leading to Christmas, so look out for posters and we’ll also keep you updated on our website www.bn5magazine.co.uk.

Finally, a very happy and peaceful festive season to you all from all of us at BN5 magazine.

Best wishes

CALLING ALL SINGERSHenfield carollers need your help on Friday 12 De-cember to sing at Henfield’s Spirit of Christmas night. We’d love some more people to join us, so if you’d like to take part contact Hilary at [email protected] or on 494213. We will not be singing for the whole evening, so there will be plenty of time to explore what else is going on in the village that night. Hilary Green

The decisive Napoleonic War battle of 1805 saw 27 British ships defeat 33 Franco-Spanish ships, sinking 22 of them with no British ships lost. Branch chair-man Fred McComas of Henfield said: “We celebrate significant days in the calendar that have historic im-portance to our country.” The lunch raised more than £100 for the Henfield Scout Hut Appeal. ‘SHINE A LIGHT IN THE DARK-NESS’ WITH AMNESTY INTERNA-TIONAL THIS CHRISTMASWould you like to ‘Shine a light into the darkness’ for someone, through sending a greetings card with a message of goodwill to those in danger for defending human rights? It’s very simple to do. Just drop into St. Peter’s Church, Henfield any day during December up to Sunday 21, where inside the church on the right you will find a table with greetings cards and informa-tion about who to send your card(s) to. This could be a prisoner of conscience, a group defending human rights, someone imprisoned for their faith etc. A map shows you which country the recipients live in and information about them. You may send as many cards as you like and take them away to post or leave them in the box on the table. I hope to be in attendance to answer any questions on Sunday 7, 14 and 21 be-tween 10am and 10.30am. Hilary Green

SANTA’S CHRISTMAS DAY PRES-ENT DELIVERYAs always Santa will be delivering presents on Christ-mas Day morning in Henfield, Small Dole, and sur-rounding areas. To have a present delivered you need to, wrap the present securely and label it clearly with the child’s name and full postal address. Do provide useful directions if it is likely to be difficult for us to find. Take the present to Graham Denyer at 8 Gresh-am Place, Henfield (01273 492402) on Thursday 18 December between 3-6pm, Friday 19 December between 3-7pm or Monday 22 December between 3-6pm. Delivery cost per present is £2.50. Only one present per parcel please, no large presents as there is limited space on the sleigh.

HENFIELD WORLD PREMIERHenfield Theatre Company is staging a brand new show written by one of its own members, Jane Haines. The company has won a number of awards in recent years from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association recognising the quality of its productions and it is now branching out further with a world pre-miere of a home grown show containing 15 original songs and incidental music. Jane’s career as a music teacher took a turn towards the dramatic arts, in 2010, when she embarked on a Master’s Degree in Musical Theatre at Goldsmiths University. The course culminated in the produc-tion of a 45 minute musical show, written by Jane and performed at Waterloo East Theatre in London, in September 2012, with a professional cast. Since graduation, and after much toil, Jane has expanded her original work into a full-length family musical en-titled ‘There Was an Old Woman – the Musical’. It is a delightful comedy based around many well known and loved nursery rhyme characters. Somewhat in the style of the Shrek movies, it has humour at dif-ferent levels to please all ages, and contains the nec-essary ingredients of skulduggery, heroism and love. The production will be staged at the Henfield Hall from Thursday 1 to Saturday 3 January 2015 (in-cluding a matinee on Saturday). Tickets (adults £10/£12 and under 12’s £7/£9) are available from Stevens Estate Agents from Monday 15 Decem-ber. See www.henfieldtheatrecompany.com for more information and sample music. Martin Love

SHOREHAM GALLERY FUNDRAIS-ER FOR CHESTNUT TREE HOUSEWe are embarking on a series of small events to raise funds for Chestnut Tree House. On the launch night 10% of all sales made on evening will be donated to the charity and donations will be taken for refreshments of mulled wine and mince pies. Raffle tickets will also be sold on the evening and there are some great prizes including: a two-hour photographic lesson with local Photographer Alan Humphries; a drawing class for two with Artist Wendy Standen; and a Gallery gift voucher worth £25. More prizes are being pledged every day, anyone can do-nate! Daisy Dawson

HENFIELD GARDEN CLUB2014 has been a very busy year for the garden club with members enjoying six talks from visiting garden-ing experts; a plant sale and coffee morning for club funds; a plant swap/sale during Henfield’s Gardens and Arts weekend with the money raised donated to the Scout Hut building fund; four coach and three car outings to gardens both large and small to inspire us; two summer socials in member’s gardens; and last but not least a new members social evening hosted by the committee. We are currently looking forward

to rounding off our year with a (members-only) French themed meal and Christmas party. We would like to wish all members and BN5 readers a Happy Christ-mas and happy gardening in the coming year. Our AGM takes place in the Henfield Hall on Tuesday 6 January. For more details about joining our club con-tact our Membership Secretary Linda Beresford at [email protected] or on 01273 492497.Margaret Hollingsworth

ERRATUMWe’re not quite sure what happened in the BN5 of-fice last month (one too many brandy mince pies per-haps?), but we made a couple of mistakes on event dates in our November edition. The Christmas Starts Here concert takes place on Thursday 4 December (not 4 November as printed – that would have been a bit too early to start Christmas!). And looking ahead to next year, the Henfield Strongman 2015 competi-tion will take place on Sunday 20 September (not 26 September). We do apologies for these mistakes and we pledge to keep our consumption of brandy mince pies down this month…Editor

panied by a summary of the last full year accounts and an indication of any project the grant will be put towards.Since last May, Henfield Parish Council’s outside works team have been undertaking various highway related work, under an agreement with West Sussex County Council. This enables work which may have in the past taken several months (or longer) to be un-dertaken by the County Council’s stretched highways maintenance contractors to be carried out within a few days, and sometimes hours, of being reported or identified. Henfield is one of only a very few local councils in the county carrying out this work which includes pothole repairs, cutting back vegetation and cleaning traffic signs. Although not part of the agreement, the works team has also been undertaking more ambitious tasks at a fraction of the cost the County Highways Department would have incurred. These have included extending the width of the carriageway in Church Street (oppo-site the raised pavement) by removing many years of debris washed down the street and clearing gullies and drainage channels by the Henfield Business Park to overcome the flooding across the road which was regularly occurring. The agreement is currently only provisional for one year but Henfield Parish Council is hopeful it will be able to negotiate a longer term agreement for the future.Philip Hill

SUSSEX MUSICIANS RAISE FUNDS FOR HARTA concert at Henfield Hall by more than 15 Sussex musicians raised more than £300 for HART. The folk and pop concert was held at the end of August to mark Bonnie Flitney’s 60th birthday. Bonnie said: “We were delighted to raise the money for HART, which does such a worthwhile job in Henfield and is always there to cope in the case of emergencies.”Mike Beardall

‘LIVING ADVENT’ IN HENFIELD Got it all sorted then? Where you will be; who you are seeing when; the shopping trips for presents; copious lists for supermarkets – and written all those cards? With so much to organise it can take the joy out of Christmas, but not this year in Henfield as things are going to be different. From the first to the last day in Advent there will be something going on be-hind closed doors and you are invited to come along and be part of the village festive celebrations. What’s more, it’s entirely free and guaranteed entertainment, magical moments and a sprinkling of seasonal won-der, just for you!The idea is that different organisations, societies and volunteer groups involving all ages from our commu-nity will offer a Christmas or seasonal entertainment or exhibition by opening their doors to you. These will take place in the pubs, clubs, places of worship, huts, shops and public spaces in and around the village, each with its own unique theme and individual offer-ing. And all you need do is work out which days inter-est you and come along at the designated time, and remember the joy that Christmas can bring. So, look out for the schedule on the posters and flyers around the village and check out the Hub for the calendar by opening the windows and doors to see what your community has for you.Nick Phillips

HENFIELD COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP UPDATEOver 300 people attended the two public drop-in events for the Neighbourhood Plans held at the end of October. We are very grateful for all the comments

received which have been assessed, helping to in-form the selection of sites for inclusion in the draft plan. Provisional dates for the remaining key stages in preparing the plan are: • Draft plan issued for six week consultation period – end of November 2014 • Amended plan and supporting documents sub-mitted to Horsham District Council who then arrange for six week publicity period – February 2015 • Plan with comments from consultees issued to Independent Examiner – April 2015 • Examiner issues report – June 2015 • If approved by examiner, plan goes to local refer-endum – July/August 2015 • Plan adopted if more than 50% of those voting are in favourWe are pleased to report that the community notice-boards are back up in Budgens. The two new boards are now sited in the front of the store. Postcard no-tices can be displayed for 50p a week and local reg-istered charities may advertise free of charge for a period of two weeks. Notices should be handed in at the kiosk with the necessary payment, with those re-ceived on Monday-Friday being put up the same day; if received at the weekend, they will be displayed from the following Monday. All funds raised will be donated to Henfield Community Partnership for use in helping the local community.Tony Jackson, HCP

PAM ON A BIKEBeing chased by a tearaway rabid dog, interviewed on Indian breakfast TV whilst sporting two black eyes as a result of a cycle accident, and eating hen’s feet for dinner. Just a few of the amazing stories that came thick and fast when Horsham’s Pam Goodall ap-peared for a sell-out evening at Stan’s Bike Shack in Partridge Green to regale an enthralled audience with tales of her solo journey around the world on her bicy-cle. “An inspiration”, “So brave”, and “No way I would do that!” were just some of the comments. ‘Pam on a Bike’ was a resounding success so a second evening was planned for 13 November which immediately sold out. A third event is planned, with strong interest already, so please drop in to Stan’s Bike Shack or call 01403 710514 for details and tickets. Tickets are just £10 each, and include a light supper, and of course our famous coffee!Steve Sole

THE FUTURE OF HENFIELD DAY CENTREFollowing a period of public consultation earlier in the year, West Sussex County Council was approached by the Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) in the summer about the possibility of taking over control of the Day Centre at Hewitts in Henfield. Since then the county council has been working to support HCP to develop sustainable proposals. A feasibility study will now be undertaken by HCP to help inform the council whether the proposals give best value. A decision as to the future of the Day Centre will be taken in December following a review of the study and further discussions between the county council and the partnership. The centre currently supports people with a physical, sensory or memory impairment and people with ac-quired brain injuries. Day Services at Henfield are un-der review as part of a wider review of all day services by the County Council. Henfield Community Partner-ship said: “We believe it is important to retain and ex-pand local services for the many older people living in and around Henfield. Working with WSCC provides opportunities to deliver a fresh, modern approach and better support for our local community. We would like to emphasise that the Henfield Day Centre will con-tinue to operate throughout the feasibility study. Any-one who would like an assessment of their social care needs can ring West Sussex County Council’s Adults’ CarePoint on 01243 642121.” Tony Jackson

DEFIBRILLATOR FOR ST PETER’SSt Peter’s Church has been given a heart defibrilla-tor by HART, and staff and helpers have been trained in its use. The defibrillator was handed over to Vicar Reverend Paul Doick on Wednesday who was trained in its use along with curate Peter O’Connell and as-sistant priest Christina Bennett. “We are delighted to have the defibrillator installed,” said Paul. “Having our staff and helpers trained in its use means we are bet-ter able to cope in the case of an emergency before a responder or paramedic arrives.” The defibrillator was paid for with some of the funds from a Three Peaks Challenge completed by HART members in the summer which raised more than £5,000. Dave said: “The presence of a defibrillator gives people some reassurance that they can deal with a cardiac emergency while waiting for a para-medic and responder to arrive. Everyone should have some basic training in resuscitation techniques.”Mike Beardall

THANK YOU!The Henfield Self Help Group Christmas Sale raised an impressive £779 which was rounded up to £800 by a further generous donation. We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all our supporters.Maureen Dexter

FOR THE LOVE OF SAMBeautiful Sam Cove passed away on 21 October fol-lowing a car accident on 4 October. She will be dearly and sadly missed by all her friends and family.Sam was born on 18 March 1977. She was a happy character and an enthusiastic child, enjoying Brown-ies, Guides and Venture Scouts and all the outdoor activities that came with it. She made lifelong friends who she always held close to her heart. She was part of a very close and loving family, enjoy-ing family gatherings, camping holidays and wonder-ful Christmases. Christmas was her favourite time of the year and she loved to entertain and share the fun and excitement with her family. Her two children, Erin and Charlie, were her world. She loved and adored them equally and was very proud of them. She was an excellent cook, masseuse and dental nurse. Many will know her as part of the team with Ben Zanjani at Henfield Dental Surgery. She worked there with her mum Eileen from 2002, as receptionist and as a dental nurse. Ben said; “Sam leaving us has left a hole in our lives that will never be filled. We are devastated to be without such a wonderful girl.”Sam didn’t ever seek the limelight but she had a natu-ral smile that would light up the room. It didn’t matter if you were family, friends or someone in the street, if Sam smiled at you, you couldn’t help but smile back. Her Dad’s name for her was ‘Sammy Sunshine’. She was a warm character with a generous heart.Eileen and all of Sam’s family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks for the messages and acts of kind-ness they’ve received from so many people over the last month. Eileen said; “There is no way I can express my gratitude for all the love and support we have re-ceived since Sam’s terrible accident on October 4th, we have been overwhelmed. ‘Thank you’ is just not enough. Thank you, for the love of Sam.”Sam’s family and friends will be fundraising in memory of Sam for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambu-lance. If you would like to make a donation you can go to www.kssairambulance.org.uk or call 01622 833833. They are holding a Christmas Fair at the Henfield Hall on Saturday 20th December from 12midday onwards. Anyone who would like to be involved, support or

sponsor, please contact Gemma Cove: [email protected]. Up to date details will appear locally and on the BN5 Facebook page. There will also be an An-nual Rounders Match which will take place at Henfield Common on the last Sunday in May.Emma Osman. With many thanks to Eileen and Gemma Cove.

VOLUNTEER STAFF REQUIREDThe Air Cadet Organisation is a youth group for boys and girls aged 12 to 20 which follows an aviation based syllabus. As part of the Royal Air Force we pride ourselves in providing a vast range of training and opportunities with our fully volunteer based staff team. Steyning Air Cadets is a very busy unit, particu-larly over the summer. Following a very successful recruitment campaign Steyning Air Cadets need more staff to assist in training provision, planning and ex-ecuting activities. All staff are DBS cleared and must also be vetted by the MOD and trained in child protection. Military or aviation experience is beneficial but not essen-tial as all training is provided. Of greater importance is the desire to assist in developing cadets to their full potential. If you think you might be able to help please contact the Squadron at [email protected] and for more information visit the Squadron website www.1140sqn.org.uk or the national site, www.raf.mod.uk/aircadetsDave Emsley, Flt Lt RAF VR(T), Officer Commanding, 1140 (Steyning) Sqn ATC

One of the shepherds wants to go and see baby Jesus, but he can’t find all his sheep! Can you help him find them?

Collect a trail leaflet from the library listing all the shops he has visited in the village and then go and try to find his sheep. Write down the name of each sheep you find on the form. We also want you to see if you can guess the name of the Shepherd who lost all the sheep. There will be a small prize for everyone who correctly names all the sheep and guesses the name of the shepherd who lost them! You will find sheep in Budgens, Hamfelds, Jeremy’s, Village Care, Stokes, St Barnabas, Henfield Furnishings, The Post Office, Bar-nards Bakery and Henfield Library.Did you love the sheep? It would be great if you could create a picture (no bigger than A4) of the sheep all safe and sound with their shepherd. We will be awarding a prize for the best ones. Once you have found all the sheep and drawn us a picture, you can drop off your completed forms and pictures in the collection box in the library be-fore Wednesday 17 December. Don’t forget to put your name, school year and phone number on the back of your picture. The First ChristmasOn the 25th December we celebrate Christmas, the birthday of Jesus who was called Christ. Before Jesus was born, his parents, Mary and Joseph, went to a town called Bethlehem. It was very busy and they couldn’t find anywhere to stay. A friendly inn-keeper let them sleep in his stable with the animals. Jesus was born, and Mary wrapped him in cloths and

The Nativity Sheep Trail

put him in the manger. A star appeared in the sky over the stable.Out in the fields, some shepherds were looking af-ter their sheep when suddenly an angel appeared. The shepherds were very scared. The angel told the shepherds not to be scared because he had brought good news. He told them that Jesus had been born and that he would be the person who would save the world. He told the shepherds to go and see Jesus. Then there were lots more angels who sang glory to God and peace on earth. The shepherds went to see the baby Jesus. They knelt down in front of the man-ger and were very happy that they had found the one who had been sent by God. When they left, they told everybody they could find about Jesus and about how he was going to save the world.Later on, some wise men came from the East to see Jesus. They brought special gifts because they knew that Jesus was a king. They were surprised that he had been born in a stable and not in a palace. They worshipped Jesus and gave him gifts of gold, frankin-cense and myrrh. Each Christmas we celebrate Jesus being born. God gave us Jesus as a present to show that he loves us. Each Christmas we give each other pres-ents to show people that we love them.Come along to the Free Church Hall on Saturday 20 December anytime between 10am and 11.30am for refreshments and to meet the Shepherd and all his sheep. Your wonderful pictures will be on display, and winners will be announced and can collect their prizes. Good luck everyone!Jean Whiting, Henfield Evangelical Free Church

If you haven’t already, then clear your diary for the evening of Friday 12 December because it’s Henfield’s Christmas evening!

In what has become a lovely local tradition the shops on the high street will be staying open until 8pm and enticing customers with glorious window displays and special offers, as well as drinks and nibbles (works for us every time!).There will also be carol singers, and plenty of char-ity stalls (including of course BN5 selling the Henfield Calendar 2015 in aid of HART). Santa will be welcom-ing children to his grotto in the bus shelter whilst the BP Guild look after his sleigh for him. There is a lovely festive atmosphere on the evening and a real sense of community spirit, so please do come along between 4 and 8pm to support our won-derful local shops and charities.See you there!Sarah Butler

It seems strange to be writing a festive article when my son is rampaging around the house in an eye damagingly bright orange pumpkin t-shirt

in preparation for Hallowe’en! But from the pet perspective, there are a couple of parallels between Hallowe’en/Bonfire Night and Christmas/New Year which are worth being aware of:Dietary Indiscretion (or eating the wrong thing): the festive period usually means plenty of sweets around for dogs to steal. While I’m sure eating a whole pack of Haribo Starmix is not great for the digestive system, if you are a dog, its chocolate that presents a danger. Without fail we always see several dogs over the festive period who have managed to ‘source’ some contraband chocolate. Whether this is the more enterprising pooch who has opened a present under the tree or just an opportunist who has snaffled something from the table, chocolate can be poisonous to dogs. If yours has managed to seize some confectionery related plunder, then it’s best to seek veterinary advice. If you have a young cat, watch out for games with tinsel – if swallowed, it can cause a nasty intestinal obstruction which requires surgical intervention to resolve. Other toxins which are more likely to be encountered around Christmas or in winter are:

• Grapes and raisins can cause severe renal failure in some dogs, while others can eat a whole bunch with no consequences.• The sweet taste of anti-freeze makes it tempting for cats, but again it is very toxic to the kidneys and unless treatment is given very quickly, the outcome is often fatal.• Macadamia nuts are toxic to some dogs and cause depression, vomiting and an elevated heart rate.

Fireworks are much more prevalent around Bonfire night, but tend to have a revival during the festive period as well. Many pets find the loud bangs and flashes very stressful and we see many pets for this reason. We have a variety of treatment options available including: de-sensitisation CDs which play recordings of fireworks to allow your pet to get used to them; over-the-counter natural calming medications; and prescription medications for those pets which are unresponsive to other treatment which work to reduce anxiety (sometimes accompanied by a mild sedative effect).Hopefully the above will make for a happy, incident free Christmas for your pet! However, if you do have any concerns then please contact us. Often we can advise you over the phone, although sometimes a visit to the surgery is required. Merry Christmas from everyone at Hawthorn Vets!Jonathan [email protected] Old Bakehouse, High Street, Partridge Green, RH13 8HU 01403 710332

Are you aged between 13 and 20? Are you ready for a challenge and up for fun, adventure, incredible experiences and making new friends? Then check

out the Steyning Air Cadets.Sponsored by the Royal Air Force, the Air Cadets are a UK-wide youth organisation with more than 40,000 members. As an Air Cadet you’ll have the opportunity to take part in some pretty amazing activities. Do you want to have real flight experience? Once you have learnt the basic knowledge of how an aircraft works, you’ll be able to go up in an aircraft or glider as a passenger at least once every year. Do you enjoy adventures? Kayaking, hill walking, camping, caving, mountain biking, offshore sailing and winter sports are just a few of the adventurous activities you can take part in. And the long list of activities doesn’t stop there: rifle shooting, sport and music are just some of the other activities you can do with the Air Cadets. As the Cadets will tell you, the Steyning squadron is very dynamic and they are kept very busy all year round. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7.30 to 9.30pm every week for parade, with just a break for a couple of weeks over the Christmas and New Year period. Outdoor training in field-craft for military skills takes place in the Steyning Downlands area on the Wiston Estate. But it’s not all boot camp - although the Cadets work hard, they also play hard! During the summer months there are expeditions or

camps nearly every weekend and recent trips have included the Farnborough Airshow and the Royal International Air Tattoo. As well as getting up close to aircraft and exploring the trade shows, cadets also have chance to have fun with themed barbeques and other social events. Whilst you’re having fun you’ll also learn some invaluable life skills which will challenge and develop your abilities. These skills include: confidence; self-discipline; leadership; team work; presenting; first aid; self-motivation; problem solving; and communicating. You will also have the opportunity to study for BTEC qualifications using an online exam system in subjects such as aviation studies and music (both worth four GCSEs), as well as public services (worth two GCSEs). Whether you are just looking for fun and adventure, or whether you are thinking ahead about a career, all the skills and experience you will gain through your cadet membership will give you a head start in life. Whatever you want to do, Air Cadets will help you to succeed. The Steyning squadron commander is Flight Lieutenant Dave Emsley and he is supported by 10 staff who volunteer on a rota basis. All leaders are fully CRB checked and are qualified for the activities that they lead. For more information about joining Steyning Air Cadets email [email protected] or see www.raf.mod.uk/aircadets for more information.Sarah Butler

Corporal Hannah Law“In Air Cadets we get to do fun activities, go on camps every year and we also get to fly – it’s amazing! Being a part of Cadets has given me a lot more confidence – I used to be the person who stood in the corner and never spoke to anyone. But now I’m a corporal and it’s pretty cool!”

“There is much more personal interaction in cadets than there is in school - you can’t really talk in class at school. You meet a whole range of people from different places when you go on camp.”

Corporal Felix Freeman-Hawker“Both my grandfathers were engineers for British Airways and I want to be an air nautical engineer for either the RAF or a commercial airline.”

“There is a real sense of belonging through the rank structure and the higher up the ranks you go, the better it gets in terms of responsibility. At age 16 you get to do more activities and at age 18 you get to do parachuting!”

Corporal Sam Smith“My family have always been in and around the aviation industry and I want to become an RAF pilot.

“The great think about air cadets is meeting new people and the diverse activities – there are lots more activities available than at school. You learn to work with people and how to communicate better. You are always with people and you are never alone. There is never a point where someone is left out or excluded from an activity.”

“When I first joined I was so shy and it took a lot of guts to come along to the first session. Cadets have really changed me as a person - I wouldn’t have been this confident three years ago when Ifirst joined.”

Parents and grandparents are increasingly giving children money instead

of buying them gifts for Christmas and birthdays. The future for our young is paved with the need for bigger deposits to buy a home,

higher education costs and of course inflation. Whilst some may criticise for showing a lack of imagination, in the long run it can bring more long term happiness than this year’s long forgotten top toy.Savings accounts and premium bonds are familiar ideas but two less considered options are pensions ISAs.PensionsChildren are allowed to have up to £3,600 paid into a pension each tax year, despite the fact they are unlikely be earning. Realistically it will be relatives paying on their behalf. However, the child still receives the tax relief, with all contributions grossed up by 20%. Therefore for the maximum £3,600 to be paid in you only actually pay £2,880. To look at it another way if you were to pay a more typical £100 into a pension £125 would actually be invested. It may seem extreme to consider pensions for a child but money paid in early on can really make a difference. If you paid £100 in, left it invested for 50 years, assumed a 5% growth rate after charges it would be worth £1,146.

Currently you cannot access your pension until you are at least 55 – often considered a disadvantage. However, you may be quite pleased that they cannot access this money at 18 when they may not spend it in an appropriate way.Junior ISAs As with their adult equivalents you have both a savings account version and an investment version of a junior ISA. Which is most appropriate depends on attitudes to risk and the child’s age. Generally speaking the younger the child the more likely it is that the investment option will be appropriate. As with pensions the maximum that can be paid in is £4,000 each year, but you do not get tax relief, so a £4,000 contribution costs you the whole £4,000. The money does grow tax free and the ‘£100 rule’ does not apply to parents. However, the account is theirs to do with as they wish when they are 18.So this year consider a gift that gives your children and grandchildren more than just a Happy Christmas!Richard Cohen, FPFS, Chartered Financial Planner
