Our 2016–17 Blyth Academy Global High School program offers what no other “year abroad” can: a world of different cultures, all explored in great depth with real creativity and intense focus.

We create global citizens who are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow by having them engage with our world—not just our country, but our world today.

Inside these pages, you will learn about Blyth’s enduring difference: providing unparalleled learning opportunities to students of all interests and backgrounds.

As Canada’s largest private school by enrollment, and the leading provider of opportunities for studying abroad, Blyth takes pride in both our programs and the students who choose to participate in them.

Each year, we look across the globe for new experiences for our students.

In 2016-17, we will visit 10 countries on three continents and offer more than 30 courses, including four Advanced Placement courses.

We welcome you to the Blyth family and invite you to explore a transformational program of study and travel.

Yours truly,

Sam Blyth, MA (Cambridge)

Our mission is to provide education without borders Blyth Academy Global High School offers a safe and structured environment for students to explore life outside their comfort zone and become more aware of their potential, both academically and personally.

Ultimately, Blyth Academy Global High School provides an education of remarkable depth and quality.

We seek to reinvent the “school” experience as we deliver the Ontario curriculum through an experiential blended-learning approach.

Our conscientious and empathetic staff believe passionately in personalized learning and experiential education. They integrate each new environment into the learning process through real-world application of concepts and the use of technology. Our staff demonstrate outstanding leadership in teaching and offer round-the–clock support for our students.

What isn’t different is our academic expectations for our students. Our expectations, such as punctual attendance, the timely completion of assignments and maintaining consistent rigour in assessment, are the same as they would be at all Blyth schools.

Blyth Academy Global High School is also about personal growth and leadership development. Students learn how to live more independently, taking on more responsibility for school work and developing time-management and interpersonal skills. They are given ample opportunity to demonstrate leadership in creating an inclusive, healthy environment for all students.

We are often asked: “What are the benefits of studying in an international environment?” This interesting question reflects the following beliefs:

1. The best way to develop a global mindset is to experience the world first-hand when you are young;

2. Giving yourself time to really explore a country gives you an invaluable perspective on life, especially if you do not have to worry about the logistics of transportation, accommodation and other details.

6 BLYTHACADEMYGLOBAL.COM

Blyth Academy Global High School makes it possible for students in grades 11 and 12, as well as gap-year students, to travel and study abroad. Our teachers and staff create a learning environment that combines classroom study with applied learning at local landmarks and cultural institutions. The innovative delivery of courses inspires our students and helps them achieve success and fulfillment as ethical and responsible citizens, engaged critical thinkers and effective problem solvers. Students will earn high school credits and experience the transformation that comes from travel: appreciating other cultures, adapting to new surroundings and recognizing that we are a truly global society.

Our terms are eight weeks in length, and students can enroll for one term, a two-term semester, three terms or the full year. All students earn two high school credits per term.

STUDENTSAll our students are between 16 and 19 years old. They come from public, separate and private schools across Canada, the United States and beyond, bringing a wonderful mix of ethnic and social backgrounds to our program.

ACADEMICSTwo subjects are studied in each term, which gives our students the time and freedom to explore subjects in depth. Students who opt for a single term will be able to apply to Blyth Academy Online or one of our 10 schools to make up the additional two courses needed to complete their school semester.

A TYPICAL WEEK All school terms are structured to provide students with the best in academic instruction and exposure to the cultures and locations we visit. Typically, students follow a schedule where they are in class weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This weekday schedule gives students enough time for coursework, with independent activities and excursions planned around school time. At times, the travel itinerary may require adjustments to the class schedule.

7:00 a.m. › Health and Wellness activities 8:00 a.m. › Breakfast9:00 a.m. › Classes11:30 a.m. › Lunch1:00 p.m. › Classes3:30 p.m. › Free time, Health and Wellness, extracurricular activities5:00 p.m. › Mandatory study hall6:00 – 7:00 p.m. › Dinner7:00 p.m. › Homework and evening activities9:30 p.m. › Curfew and sign-in (12:30 a.m. curfew on weekends)

HEALTH AND WELLNESSThe health and well-being of our students is our primary concern. We support our students in maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle while travelling. This is done through active learning, emotional support from staff, access to nutritious food, opportunities for exercise (as each location permits), and workshops that help students develop wellness skills such as reflective practice, stress reduction, financial awareness and time management.

Participation is a requirement of Blyth Academy Global High School.

Blyth Academy Global High School appreciates the support of parents in ensuring that students understand the importance of nurturing a lifelong commitment to health and wellness.

SAFETY AND SUPERVISIONOur students’ health, well-being and security is of primary importance.

Flowing from this commitment, we encourage all our students to participate in organized extracurricular activities and to use their free time in ways that strengthen their physical, mental and emotional health. It is also critical that every student reviews and signs the Blyth Academy Code of Conduct prior to attending Blyth Academy Global High School.

Our Code of Conduct addresses the responsibility of all students in creating a safe learning and social environment. This includes adhering to our policies on alcohol and drug use, bullying and the inappropriate use of social media.

We use a progressive approach to discipline in order to help our students develop a sense of responsibility for their actions and to understand the impact of their choices on themselves and others.

As a result of our extensive travel education experience over the years, we've put stringent plans in place with our team of experienced staff, to effectively manage any crisis situation.

ROOMMATES AND CLASSMATESWe understand that some students choose to travel together and would like to be roommates. Following your application, you will be sent a Personal Information Form that asks for roommate requests. Most roommate requests can be accommodated, but cannot be guaranteed.

ACCOMMODATIONSOur accommodations are always comfortable, situated in safe neighbourhoods and located close to important sites and public transit.

Students stay in hotels for most of our itineraries. Most of our accommodations have WiFi access in common areas such as lobbies and restaurants, and some have WiFi or cable Internet within the rooms. Air-conditioned rooms will be provided, where available. Students will stay in single, twin or triple rooms, depending on the location.

Certain terms also feature a stay in student residences at local universities.

We have used the majority of our hotels and accommodations for many years, and staff are very accommodating.

MEALSStudents and staff eat together at breakfast and dinnertime, and these meals are provided as part of your program. This arrangement leaves lunchtime open, giving students the opportunity to explore and purchase lunch locally.

Typically, breakfast is continental style with a set number of choices. This may include croissants, orange juice, cereal and yogurt. Dinner consists of a buffet or plated meal; an example would be spaghetti bolognese, green salad, bread, and fruit for dessert. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions. Before your departure, dietary restrictions should be outlined on the Personal Information Form that you received after applying. The ability to accommodate special dietary needs varies by country and location.

INCLUDED EXCURSIONSMany field trips and excursions are offered as part of Blyth Academy Global High School. Some excursions, however, are not mandatory.

These out-of-class experiences relate directly to material covered in class. Many students find that these excursions both complement and significantly enhance the term, preparing them in greater depth for university.

OPTIONAL EXCURSIONSIn addition to the included excursions, we offer opportunities for students to continue exploring their cultural surroundings. These excursions are often adventurous and exhilarating, such as ziplining over the treetops of a rainforest or hiking up a volcano.
