Blumine Island Oruawairua

Blumine is…

It’s an island, which has no humans permanently living on it.

There are native species living all round the island such as Tomtits, Weka, Weta, Gecko and native fish.

Location Blumine Island

is near Picton in the Marlborough sounds.

To get there, some take the train to Picton and then we all take a boat to the island

What we did on Blumine island:

16 students from 8 schools came together to work on Blumine

Island to conserve and protect the natural environment.

Purpose of the Blumine Island project

• To learn about conserving the environment through hands on experience.

• Working with a big group of students to help research for DOC .

• AND TO HAVE FUN!!!

We collected data for various projects such as:

Weta monitoring

Beech tree plotting/monitoring

Track Clearing

Tracking Tunnels

Tomtit sighting

Gecko tracking

Snail monitoring

Fish measuring

We decide what we do, when we do it

and how we do it.

• Students tramp out around the island gathering information for DOC .

• Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all brought to the island and have to be made by the students.

• After researching and collecting data we go for a swim, play games, rest or even pilates lessons!

Our Vision

To see people getting involved with Blumine and enjoying the island as much as we

did!

Hopefully one day soon, Kiwis, Mohua and Tieke will be introduced onto the island.
