Between Polishing &Bluing Rust Preventive

A freshly polished gun, which you have spent hours getting  into  beautiful  condition  for  bluing,  is  a prime target for surface rust if it is not going into the bluing tank immediately. A few hours under some conditions - between final polishing and blu-ing, can result in fine “silver” spots showing up on the gun after it has been blued. These are a result of microscopic rust spots developing following polish-

ing, and prior to bluing. High-powered rust preventives should not be used during this storage period, because they are difficult to remove and, if not completely cleaned off, will result in a “gray” bluing job. Brownells HOLD is the modern answer to in-shop storage of parts, prior to final finishing. It chemically engages free oxygen and neutral-izes all acidic impurities, (including fingerprint acids). No petroleum additives are included in this new, modern rust preventive; therefore, oily surfaces are not a problem. Polished, HOLD-treated parts may be put right into the 909™ Cleaning Tank with no change in your regular bluing techniques. Application is either by spray (pint spray bottle is furnished), or by immersion. Small parts may be immersed indefinitely in HOLD with no possibility of rust ever forming. Can be used on all metals except aluminum, magnesium, and cast iron such as engine parts. HOLD is non-caustic, non-acid, non-toxic, non-flam-mable,  inexpensive and easy to use. HOLD-treated gun parts will withstand indefinite in-shop dry storage.SPECS: 1 gallon (128 fl. oz./3.8 L) or 5 gallons (640 fl. oz./18.9 L) net contents.#082-023-128HA  1 Gallon HOLD™  2H26D83 . . . . . $ 34.97#082-023-640HA  5 Gallon HOLD™  5L101D46  . . . . . 124.97

WHICH TYPE OF BLUINGSHOULD I CHOOSE?

With  so  many  different  types  of  bluing  available,  at-tempting to choose the one most appropriate for your needs can be confusing. Each type has its advantages.    Brownells provides four basic types of bluing; Oxynate® No. 7, hot salts bluing; Dicropan IM®, a hot water blue; Nitre Blue® Bluing, a heat blue; Dicropan T4®, Oxpho-Blue® and 44/40® cold blues.

OXYNATE NO. 7

Our Oxynate No. 7 hot salts bluing is the type most com-monly used by firearms manufacturers and offered by more fully equipped gunsmith shops than any other. The advan-tages are:  speed of the operation; uniformity of color; the relative simplicity of the process and a very consistent, du-rable finish on a variety of different types of steels: one that closely matches the original finish on many of the firearms produced commercially within the last fifty years or so. This is very important,  for you can provide your customers a finish they are familiar with and find desirable. Also, hot salts bluing is what most folks expect from a professional gunsmith. And, since it is not normally done by a hobbyist or tinkerer, it is the popularly accepted mark of the profes-sional gunsmith.    To do the finest possible job of bluing with Oxynate No.7, you’ll need to set up a separate room to keep the steam and humidity generated, away from tools or guns. You’ll also need tanks, stands, burners, safety gear and an adequate source of natural gas, propane or electricity.

DICROPAN IM

Hot water blues, such as our Dicropan IM, are updated  versions of the traditional “rust blues” that took days or weeks to apply. Dicropan IM will provide a very attractive blue/black color and an extremely durable, abrasion resis-tant  finish. It  is completely safe to use on soft soldered, double barrel shotguns. Applying Dicropan IM is a very simple procedure and can be done with as little as one tank and a heat source to get the water in the tank boiling. While more labor intensive than Oxynate No. 7™ Bluing, Dicro-pan IM™ Bluing is an excellent choice for the occasional rebluer or the shop specializing in double barrels.

NITRE BLUE BLUING

Bluing can also be done by controlled heating of the part and Brownells NitreBlue is an example of this type of blu-ing. It is a very old process that was used frequently during the 19th century. The salts liquefy when heated to approxi-mately 275° F. to 300° F. The normal “bluing” temperature is around 600°  F. NitreBlue™ Bluing requires very little equipment: the salts, a container to heat them in, and a heat source. By varying the amount of time you submerge your workpiece and the temperature of the liquefied salts, you can obtain colors ranging from the straw found on Luger triggers to the very bright blue found on older Colt revolv-ers. Because of the high temperatures involved, NitreBlue Bluing should be used on small, non-critical components such as butt plates, grip caps and sights, to avoid changing any heat-treating on action parts.

OXPHO-BLUE, DICROPAN- T4, & 44/40

Cold blues, like our Oxpho Blue, Dicropan T4 and 44/40, are ideal for the hobbyist or for the shop that does only a bit of metal finish touch-up from time to time. No special equipment is required other than a solvent to remove all traces of grease or oil and a swab or cleaning patch to ap-ply the cold blue. There is no danger of rust or damage to other equipment from fumes or high humidity. Cold blues can be used quickly and easily, and the process is fast and very simple.

44/40 has long been one of the cold-blue standards in the indus-try and we here at Brownells are delighted to have purchased the original, high-speed formula and the legendary name and brought it back to its many fans.

44/40’s familiar bluing action is almost magic; simply dampen a patch with 44/40, wipe it on and wipe it off immediately with a dry one. The coloring action happens instantly and the color penetrates deep into the metal for a long-lasting finish. There’s no need to soak or rub for long periods. Surface preparation’s easy, too; for scratches, just clean and degrease as you normally would and apply 44/40. As a blue for external/internal parts and pieces, the procedure is just as easy. Bring the surface to the finish you want, clean it and wipe-on, wipe-off. 44/40 will do the job beautifully. And, it’s great for other jobs around the shop, too. The quick action and dark color makes 44/40 an excellent substitute for traditional layout fluids. The steel is darkened quickly so your layout lines will show up. There’s no surface buildup of “paint” to foul up dimension readings and nothing to peel or flake off. Coat lathe and cutting tools before sharpening so you can see where you’re grinding. Use 44/40 to age brass and copper in restorations, or just to reduce glare and reflection. You can literally do thousands of jobs with 44/40!

OXPHO-BLUE®

Finest Professional Cold Blue On The Market - Period!

Originally  developed  for  the  occasional  bluer  who  is  not equipped to completely polish a gun prior to bluing, Oxpho Blue - because of  its ease of application and remarkably superior results - has become a favorite of the professional gunsmith as well. With Oxpho-Blue, all you need do in most cases, is dampen a piece of cotton flannel and give the area a good rubbing. The chemical goes through the oil on the gun, removes thin rust and blues the steel underneath. No after-rust.  For looks, the final finish was not intended to approach the beauty of the well-polished, hot-blued gun. It has developed, however, that in the hands of a careful craftsman, not only is the Oxpho-Blue finish beautiful, but it is also more durable and weather resistant than any other known chemical finish!

Oxpho-Blue has other outstanding features worthy of note:

    1.  Absolutely no after-rust.

    2.  Phosphate-like surface forms under the blue.

    3.   Rust removing qualities of the solution, making it unneces-sary to remove mild rust in the usual manner.

    4.   “Wetting” characteristics of the solution, giving it the abil-ity to penetrate oil, dirt, etc., on the surface of the gun; blue the metal underneath; remove rust and dirt; leave the gun blued and ready for oiling.

    5.   Beauty and High durability of the finish: Vigorous rubbing with No. 0 steel wool is one of our favorite application meth-ods- the more rubbing, the more brilliant it becomes and, since abrasion is part of the process, normal contact from gun cases, brush and clothing won’t wear your bluing.

(Note: It is possible to get a surface so dense with Oxpho-Blue that water will puddle on it!)

New Formula Dicropan IM is truly a multi-purpose bluing solution, serving a definite purpose for both the fully-equipped, high volume, professional shop and also for the gunsmith who has an occasional gun to turn out. The finish is beautiful…a professional blue-black color…sure to please you and your cus-tomers. The process is easy and simple to do, and the equipment required is minimal.    For the shop with a hot salts bluing room, Dicropan IM is not intended to replace the caustic salts. After all, once set up, they are the most economical, efficient, and fastest way to blue a lot of guns in a full-time or busy, part-time bluing operation. But, New Formula Dicropan IM does give these shops a safe way to blue all those doubles that come in with soft-soldered ribs which can separate in hot salts. And, it gives a back-up system to use when only one or two guns need to be done and it’s not worth heating up the hot tanks.    For the smaller shop or individual who wants to blue an oc-casional  gun,  Dicropan  IM  can  become  their  primary  bluing system. It can be done just about anywhere with only a couple of tanks and a heat source. It is slower to do than dipping the gun in the hot caustic salts for about 20 minutes…but with only 1 or 2 guns to do, who cares!!    Over the years,  techniques  for applying Dicropan IM have been varied, often complex, and not always successful for some shops. We asked our Chemist  to adjust  the  formula  to make it easier to get a perfect job - and did he ever! It’s now more forgiving, less likely to permanently streak, and much, much easier to apply. We then developed a new application technique that works reliably, repeatedly and gives the best, toughest, and longest lasting Hot Water Bluing available.    The resulting combination of new formula and new technique is absolutely incredible. The New Formula Dicropan IM is so easy to use and so adaptable…plus, the new application pro-cedure that takes full advantage of these improvements is so foolproof that we highly recommend it to anyone who wants a superior bluing job.    New Formula Dicropan IM is safe in your shop and safe for you to use. It contains no caustics, no mercury compounds, has no odor and no harmful fumes. Besides being easy and economical, it truly gives you an outstanding bluing job every time - but you must follow the instructions carefully and completely.    Complete instructions for the new application technique are included with each order of New Formula Dicropan IM to be sure that you do it right. In addition, our Tech Support Staff is always available by phone or letter to help you.    If you haven’t tried Dicropan IM bluing, wait no longer. We’re sure the new formula, the new technique and absolutely superb results will please you…in fact, we Guarantee it!SPECS: 1 pt. WHAT DO I NEED TO POLISH GUNS? Here’s a quick look at the basic supplies for polishing guns.

BASIC EQUIPMENT    First, you need something to turn the wheels. You can use salvaged electric motors from a variety of machinery but we like the 1800 RPM BALDOR BUFFER - It’s the number one choice  of  professional  bluing  and  plating  shops.  The  long shafts get the wheels away from the motor body for good clear-ance.  As in cars, more horsepower is always better. It lets you turn a bigger wheel which has a higher surface speed and, therefore, polishes faster.     You can bolt the buffer directly to a bench or table but that can limit access around the wheels for odd shaped objects. Our choice for a rock solid mount would be the BALDOR BUFFER PEDESTAL. 6" or 8" STITCHED MUSLIN POLISHING WHEELS - The work-horse wheel of polishing. Use for cleaning and/or roughing with the coarser grits. You’ll need three wheels per grit (glue them together with Elmers, etc.). Power the 6" with 1⁄2 hp mo-tors; a 3⁄4 or 1 hp will turn the 8" nicely.6" or 8" LOOSE MUSLIN POLISHING WHEELS - Softer touch  for that final polish with the finer grits. The 90 ply wheel is wide enough for most work without stacking.

POLISHES    Of course, you’ll need polishing compound and our POL-ISH-O-RAY™ greaseless polishing compound  is made with uniform, screened, mesh size grit for very best results. Except for mirror finishes and aluminum work, P-O-R will do it all.    For mirror finishes on steel and soft metals like aluminum and brass, our grease-base,  NO. 555™ POLISHES are the best choice. Far easier to work with than tripoli and rouge.

ADDITIONAL HELPFUL TOOLS    #12 POLISHING WHEEL BAG. When a wheel set is not in use, protect it from dirt and grit contamination. Build a cabi-net and keep the door shut or toss ’em in one of these bags.     When you first mount the new wheels, they will be out of round. In that condition they won’t “take” compound evenly and will bounce when you touch the work to them. True them using the BUFFING WHEEL RAKE. As you polish and remove metal, the wheel surface will load up with metal particles and quit cutting efficiently; clean it and get it ready for fresh pol-ish using the POLISHING WHEEL CLEANING BRICK.

STUFF YOU WON’T WANT TO BUY, BUT REALLY NEED    Protect your eyes from flying grit and airborne particles by always wearing a FULL FACE SAFETY SHIELD.POLISHING GLOVES - Soft cotton to keep fingerprints from  leaving rust-causing sweat and body oils on polished steel. 3M DISPOSABLE FILTER MASKS - Helps keep harmful pol-ishing dust out of your lungs. Blow your nose after a session without wearing one, if you get black stuff, you need a mask.

* Compact Grain Belt

* About “Compact Grain” Belts - Aluminum Oxide Belts in super-fine grit (like 600) are only available in what the maker calls “Compact Grain”. This process layers grit in a special adhesive and greatly increases belt life. Compact grain belts are easily identified; they are ugly! The 600 grit belt shown looks like it should be a 60 grit but IT ISN’T. It really will give a 600 grit finish and will last extremely well.
