The 17th annual Home Improvement Show
was held August 19 – 21 at the Columbia
Metropolitan Convention Center. The
annual event is presented by the HBA of
Greater Columbia Remodelers and was
sponsored by The State newspaper and
the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
The event saw many changes this year that
were designed to improve the overall show
for exhibitors and attendees alike. Most
notably was the absence of the traditional
Preview Party, which was replaced with
an HBA General Membership Meeting
at lunchtime on the opening day of the
show. Members at that meeting were then
invited to visit the show at no charge. (See
a recap of that meeting on page 12.)
Other changes included the way our
advertising package was timed around
the event, hours of the show, unlimited free
tickets for exhibitors to distribute, and free
tickets in our newspaper ads. The result
of all of these changes was positive! The
attendance doubled from the previous
year and the exhibitors were very pleased
after the event.
Plans are already underway for the
2012 show, and we expect the show to
keep moving in a positive direction for
everyone involved. The next show by the
HBA of Greater Columbia is the Carolina
Classic Home & Garden Show to be held
March 9 – 11, 2012 at the SC State
Fairgrounds. Exhibit space is on sale now
through the HBA office.

10th Annual Columbia Remodelers Awards Announced
The membership of the Columbia Remodelers met for a Quarterly Meeting on Tuesday, August 30 at Seawell’s. About 25 members were in attendance. After networking, the meeting got underway. We had a recap and discussion about the Home Improvement Show held earlier in the month. After that, we had dinner and then our guests speaker started the program.
We had Andrew Cole from Collins & Lacy speak to us about a recent decision by the SC Supreme Court that affects general liability insurance for builders. The cases involved have been heard and reheard multiple times over the past few years and involve a lot of “legalese,” but Andrew gave a great review and translated it into English for us.
August Quarterly Meeting
The Green Building Council not only helps members and the public better understand how homes are built green, we also certify homes that are built to the National Green Building Standard (ANSI ICC-700). We have copies of the Standard available for purchase at the HBA Office and we have members that can make the process of building to the Standard as easy and cost-effective as possible.
And, since this is a local certification program, we are able to offer this green home certification at a fee lower than any of the national programs. Plus, there are discounts for HBA Members, Green Building Council members and volume builders. If you’re thinking about building green, we hope you consider the local Build Green Greater Columbia certification program. Contact Bin Wilcenski at the HBA to learn more and get started TODAY!

Green Certification Program Overview
CouncilNews
As I traveled to different builder and real estate offices this past year there was one question I heard repeated over and over in conversations…”Where are all the buyers?”
Believe it or not there are buyers out there. Maybe a little less than last year, but they are out there. The question is not “Where are the buyers?” but rather “Who is your buyer?” In the pressure of a buyers market many builders struggled to increase features while having to lower their overall price in order to stay competitive. While pricing and features are extremely important you may be leaving sales and/or a little profit on the table if you do not understand who your buyer is. By identifying who your buyer is, you can design your product not based on what the competition is doing but on what the needs and
wants of your buyers are. By identifying who your buyer is, you can target your marketing efforts and dollars to attract and capture these buyers.
Throughout this year your Sales and Marketing Council has worked hard to bring you free and informative educational opportunities to help you identify buyers in the market, such as with our She-Conomy topic, as well as different mediums to reach them with classes on blogging, video marketing, and the maximizing your internet presence. Our goal is to help provide the tools members need to be successful and provide those tools at the lowest cost possible. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of these free opportunities.
Thank you so much for this opportunity to serve you,
Marlene Sheard, 2011 SMC Chairman

The annual TOUR OF HOMES was held during the last two weekends of September and the first weekend of October this year and featured six Featured Communities, 16 home builders and 44 new homes for sale. An estimated 6,000 people attended the scattered-site showing of new homes.
The event officially began with the Sneak Peek held Thursday, September 15 at Saluda River Club in Lexington. Real Estate professionals and home builders enjoyed a beautiful evening at the Village Clubhouse visiting six homes in the neighborhood on the Tour.
We also sent a team of judges to every new entry on the Tour and had them choose the best home in each price range. Here are the award winners:

An HBA General Membership Meeting was held on Friday, August 19 at 11:30 am at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Over 200 members were in attendance for the meeting, which featured two USC football coaches and the Columbia Remodelers Awards winners announcement.
Normally, our meetings are held on Thursday evenings at Seawell’s, but this meeting was held in conjunction with our Home Improvement Show that was taking place in the convention center and opening to the public at 1 pm that day. The meeting was set at that time and location in order to let members see the show with the greatest of ease.
Because the Home Improvement Show is presented by the Columbia Remodelers council of the HBA, this meeting also served as the vehicle to announce the winners of the 10th annual Columbia Remodelers Awards (CRAs). The purpose of the awards program is to showcase high-quality work being performed by local remodelers, and announcing the CRA winners to our members helps spread the word and accomplish that goal.
Special thanks to Columbia Metropolitan Magazine for sponsoring the awards program and for helping to announce the winners at the meeting. We had 21 entries in 11 categories and
the judges selected 12 winners. Please turn to page 7 to learn who the winners are.
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who participated. Entries for the 11th annual CRAs will be accepted in May of 2012. Start taking before pictures of your remodeling jobs so you can enter the awards.
Our special guest speakers at the General Membership meeting were University of South Carolina Defensive Line Coach Brad Lawing and Offensive Line Coach Shawn Elliott. They gave an inside look at what the Gamecocks were working on and facing for the coming year, and did so in an informal and humorous way.
We finished up the meeting with some awards for members reaching new levels in the SPIKE Club. We also awarded the Spirit of Leadership Award to Ed McDonnell. Allyson Way Hank accepted the Membership Drive Cup on behalf of the Queens of Hearts team in the May Membership Drive.
After the meeting concluded members were invited to head down the hallway to the Main Hall for a first look at the 17th Annual Home Improvement Show. See page 6 to see how the show went this year.

Attending college on a full scholarship, successful rescue from
emotional and physical abuse, family restoration, progressing from
incarceration to law school graduate……these are just a few of the
awesome developments in the lives of some Members and Coaches
as reported during the C-CORE National Mentoring Summit held in
New Orleans, LA September 20 - 22.
C-CORE (Construction Coaching Opportunities To Reach
Employment) began exposing young people to the careers in
homebuilding one (1) year ago through mentoring relationships and
this Summit gave the many different organizations that originally
emerged to administer its success a chance to come together and
celebrate some success. As with any new effort, the first year is spent
letting people know that you exist and soliciting their involvement
for the sake of a greater good. In the case of professionals of the
homebuilding industry, the greater good offered some immediate
return on investment of their time since the targeted group of young
people represented the future lifeline to the many different professions
in homebuilding. Some of the first organizations across the nation to
step up to the plate include but are not limited to Communities in
Schools of Georgia, Big Brother Big Sister of New Orleans, ACE
Mentors Florida, United Way of Tucson, and taking on what is one
of the largest roles in this program by administering for three sites is
our very own HBA of Greater Columbia.
South Carolina has four total sites/cities that serve the program;
Columbia, Florence, Charleston all administered by HBA of Greater
Columbia. The fourth site, Greenville is managed directly by HBI
(Home Builders Institute). The vision to see the importance of the
program is accredited to the HBA Board of Directors and our Executive
Director Earl McLeod, but the work required to carry out the plan
takes teamwork and some of these team members were invited to
celebrate, share, and learn during the 3-day Summit. A special thanks
to the our counterparts – Columbia: Earl McLeod – Executive Director:

We have just completed the first year of this 3-year funded program
and we are excited about what can and with your help, will be
achieved through mentoring in our area. So let this serve as an
invitation for you to offer your expertise, vision for the future of our
industry, and your time to enriching the lives of young people. Let me
first warn you, more than you want to prepare to come and give to
these kids focus more on preparing yourself for what you will receive
as these young people share their lives, stories, and incredible
resilience with you. Individually you can do a lot, but go one step
further and encourage your colleagues, employees and even your
boss to allow the entire company to give back through mentoring.
