Congratulations and fond wishes for success to each member of the Blueprint for Leadership Cohort of 2012. All of us at HandsOn Jacksonville thank you

for your participation and attention, for your enthusiasm and good humor, for your competence and intelligence, and for your spirit and style.

No doubt you are already laying claim to the title “Best Class,” and no doubt it is true at this moment in time! You have learned together, questioned together, planned together and rolled up your sleeves together to get a job done. You have been exposed to some of the innumerable needs in our community, and now as you move on to the next phase of your Blueprint for Leadership experi-ence, more will be expected from you, and you will receive less guidance and support. Do, however, remember that we are here as a resource for you. Please

plan to remain connected to us through our e-news, our various programs and services, and volunteer opportunities.

Let me leave you with some final thoughts that you may already be familiar with since they have found their way into the political discourse. They come from the elders of the Hopi Nation, Oraibi, Arizona. Let them speak to you in the context of your community and your own personal journey of service.

We have been telling the people that this is the eleventh hour/Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the hour/And there are things to be considered./Where are you living?/What are you doing?/What are your relationships?/Are you in the right relation?/Where is your water?/Know your garden./It is time to speak your truth/Create your community./Be good to each other./And do not look outside yourself for the leader./This could be a good time!/There is a river flowing now very fast/It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid./They will try to hold onto the shore./They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly./Know the river has its destination./The elders say we must let go of the shore, and push off and into the river,/Keep our eyes open, and our head above the water./See who is in there with you and celebrate./At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally./Least of all ourselves./For the moment that we do,/Our spiritual growth and jour-ney comes to a halt./The time of the lone wolf is over, Gather yourselves!/Banish the word “struggle” from your attitude and your vocabulary./All that you do now must be done in a sacred manner/And in celebration./We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

A trained, equipped and engaged board of directors can mean the difference between effectiveness and failure for nonprofit organizations. For more than twenty years, HandsOn Jacksonville has mobilized, equipped and placed leaders as interns on area nonprofit boards. Blueprint for Leadership was launched in 1988 as Project Blueprint in response to a Kellogg Foundation study which indicated a startling disparity between the percentage of income given by minorities to nonprofit organizations and the representation of minorities on governing boards of the same organizations. Project Blueprint was implemented by HandsOn Jacksonville to identify, recruit, train and place minority on nonprofit boards. The program experienced such tremendous success that in 1997 HandsOn Jacksonville broadened its mission locally, and it became Blueprint for Leadership. With the change came a corresponding movement of inclusion to reflect a true representation of the Northeast Florida population. Since the program’s inception in 1988, more than 850 people have graduated from Blueprint for Leadership and have interned on more than 50 local nonprofit boards of directors.

Meg Balke earned her B. A. in Communications at the University of North Florida. She is the VP of Operations & Development at Girls Inc. of Jacksonville. She was board president of Betty Griffin House, a shelter for abused women and their minor children. Meg is also a coach for Girls on the Run of NE FL.

Frank Carbone earned his BS, Master of Science and MBA from Florida State University. He is the Purchasing and Materials Director for CSX. Frank has volunteered with Habijax, Jacksonville Youth Soccer and American Heart Association. Frank serves on the board and development committee of HandsOn Jacksonville.

Kathy Chelini holds a BSN and a Masters in Nursing and is also a certified midwife. Kathy is the College Campus Chair for Nursing and Healthcare at the University of Phoenix. She has volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America as a Health Care Evaluator and a First Aid Trainer.

Mary Davis-Johnson graduated the University of Central Florida with a Bachelorof Nursing. She was elected president of the Legal Nurse Consultants of Greater Jacksonville. Mary is the founder and executive director of the Davis Performing Arts Center.

Rosa Dubose earned her BA in Criminal Justice, as well as her JD from the University of Florida. She is the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Florida Coastal School of Law. Rosa is a member of the Jacksonville Bar Association, the Florida Bar and the American Bar Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

Jessica Fowler graduated University of Connecticut with a BS in Business and Marketing. She is an AmeriCorps VISTA serving a year with HandsOn Jacksonville.Jessica is an ombudsman-a volunteer appointed by the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Jacksonville. She serves as a liaison between the commanding officer and 300 sailors and their families.

Carol Gilham earned her BS in Business Administration/ Marketing from Auburn University. She is an account executive with Ruckus Advertising and Public Relations.Carol is on the board of The Crew, Habijax, a member of the Young Professionals Group - Discovery Circle, Ronald McDonald House of Jacksonville and patron member of the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville.

Natalie Beyer graduated Temple University with a Bachelor of Business Administration.Her Masters in Arts of Organizational Management was earned at University of Phoenix.Natalie is the Human Resources Manager/Senior Human Resources Generalist with CitiGroup. She has volunteered with Girls on the Run, Junior Achievement and the MS Society.

Tori Hahn holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Columbus State University. She is a project director in Citibank’s Global Fraud Operations andvolunteers as a Junior Achievement instructor for JAGirl’s.

Pierre Kellum received his BS and MS in Leadership and Business Ethics from Duquesne University. He is a Senior Manager, Business Support, National Strategic Accounts for BCBS of Florida. In Pennsylvania, he served as a Board Trustee of Carson Long Military Academy, a board member of the local chapter of the National Black MBA Association and mentor for the Harrisburg YMCA Teen Achiever Program.

John Lawson received his education from U. S. Marine Corps Sergeants Distance Education Program. He is the Community Partnerships Director at HandsOn Jacksonville. John volunteers for the Gator Bowl Association, JCCI Forward andthe Jacksonville Marine Corps 1/2 Marathon and Freedom Association.

Erica Lewandowski graduated Florida State University with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Communications. She is a Business Banking Relationship Manager with Wells Fargo and has volunteered with Special Olympics, the Relay for Life and March of Dimes.

Keith Marks received his BA in Journalism at the University of North Florida and his M.Ed. in Language Acquisition from Tel Aviv University, Israel. He is the Executive Director of PB&J (Party, Benefit & Jam) a nonprofit. Keith is the co-owner/director of Ananda Kula Healing Center; is a licensed and certified neuromuscular massage therapist; teaches at UNF as a Language Instructor and is a free-lance writer for Folio Weekly.

Cari Holland holds a BA from Flagler College. She was a Communications Major with a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in Graphic Design and Advertising. Cariis a PR and Account Coordinator with the Dalton Agency and has participated in the Diversity Circles of the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission and is a mentor with the Girl Scouts.

Shana Herrin graduated University of Phoenix with a BS in Business and is a marketing specialist at Stellar. She has volunteered as a Scoutmaster and Troop Committee Chair for the Boy Scouts of America and a Corporate Volunteer Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity and has also volunteered with Community Hospice Foundation.

Ben Hippeli received his BBA from Georgia State and his MBA from the University of North Florida. He is regional manager at Association of Capital Resources. Ben is a hospital liaison volunteer for the American Cancer Society and develops and maintains relationships with local cancer care centers and recruits and trains volunteers for cancer control programs.

Lisa McIntosh graduated Georgia College and State University with a BS in Accounting. She is a District Manager/VP with Wells Fargo Bank. Lisa co-founded the Wells Fargo Regional Diversity Council. She has been the co-chair & event chair for Wells Fargo’s March of Dimes as well as president of Wells Fargo’s GREATer Jacksonville Volunteer Chapter.

Carmen North is a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch. She is on the board and development committee of HandsOn Jacksonville. Carmen also volunteers at the George Washington Carver Elementary Saturday School.

Barbara Scott studied at Florida State University and the LOMA Institute earning her FMLI and ACS and is a manager at Prudential. Barbara has volunteered with Take Stock in Children, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Sulzbacher Center.

Beth Slater obtained her BA in English at the University of North Florida. She is an online marketing administrator with the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce.Beth has volunteered with JCCI and IMPACT Jax.

Ellen Wiss is the President of the Homkor Companies. She volunteers with the Junior League of Jacksonville, the George Washington Carver Elementary Saturday School and serves on the board and development committee of HandsOn Jacksonville.

Chris Warren graduated the University of North Florida with a BS in Communications with a focus in Public Relations and a minor in Political Science. He is a Public Policy Associate with the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. Chris was the VP of youth ministry at Crossroads United Methodist Church for two years.

Carole Ann Steiger received her BS in Health Education from the University of Florida.She is the VP/COO of HandsOn Jacksonville. Previous community service includes the NE FL Healthy Start Coalition, Jacksonville Women’s Network and the N FL Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Amanda Patch received her BAS from Florida State College of Jacksonville. She is the Coordinator at the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce – Beaches Division. Her volunteer activities have been with the TPC, the Salvation Army and IMPACT Jax.

Michael Orr holds a BS in Business Administration from Eastern Carolina University. He earned his Juris Doctorate at Florida Coastal School of Law where he was president of the Student Bar Association for two years. Michael, a partner at Dawson Orr, is a civil litigator. Volunteer activities include Special Olympics, FCSL Alumni President and Up & Cummers of Jacksonville - Cummer Art Museum & Gardens Board of Directors, Membership Chair.

Cohort ProjectThe 2012 Blueprint for Leadership cohort is collectively passionate about the service areas of education, children and health and wellness. Defined by these interests, they selected Episcopal Children’s Services’ Belmont Head Start Center to be the recipient of their community service project. They made improvements inside and out of the center, first improving usability and organization in the classrooms by installing storage systems. Outside the center, they planted a sustainable vegetable garden with 3 raised beds to be used as a teaching tool for wellness education. They also dug out the existing over-run entry gardens and installed an irrigation system and beautified it with plants and herbs. The kids loved being a part of the planting and were excited to see the great work being done at their school.

The cohort worked together to advocate for community support for the center and raised more than $6,400 in cash donations and more than $500 of in-kind donations to benefit the center.

The staff and board of HandsOn Jacksonville commend the 2012 Blueprint for Leadership Cohort for making a difference in the lives of kids in our community with your outstanding service project!

Rena Coughlin is the CEO and President of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida. The Nonprofit Center helps nonprofits deliver on their missions by providing them with training, advocacy, research, and other resources that strengthen their businesses and enable their leadership. Rena’s background in government policy and community leadership has led her to expand the Nonprofit Center’s advocacy and lobbying practice. She serves on the boards of several nonprofits including the LeRoy Collins Institute, and often represents the nonprofit sector on citizen commissions and other public forums.

Nicole E. Bowden is a certified public accountant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, LLP of Jacksonville. She works daily with financial reporting and internal controls, providing expertise to Fortune 500 companies. During her graduate studies, she instructed Basics of Financial Accounting at Florida State University, where she assisted with the 2004 revisions to the Gleim CPA Study Guide for Auditing. In addition to her work with various other local nonprofits, Nicole is currently serving as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of HandsOn Jacksonville, and is a proud Blueprint for Leadership Cohort of 2009 alum.

Edward R. Hayes is the recipient of HandsOn Jacksonville’s inaugural Edward R. Hayes Unity in Action Award. As the Principal of Edward R. Hayes and Associates, Ed develops and facilitates highly interactive seminars that provoke a deep level of awareness, understanding and sensitivity among diverse groups of people. Wyman Winbush is a Success Coach and Personal Speaker who facilitates dynamic workshops geared to helping individuals set personal and professional goals. Speaking topics encompass areas such as goal setting, motivational enhancements, self-improvement, career planning and leadership training. Wyman is an active member of the Jacksonville community, giving of his time, talent and treasure not only to HandsOn Jacksonville’s Blueprint for Leadership program, but also to United Way and Duval County Schools. Dr. Smith has been the president and CEO of HandsOn Jacksonville since 1995 when she retired from active military service in the Navy with the rank of commander. She received her bachelors degree in education from the University of Wisconsin, her masters in education leadership from the University of West Florida, and her doctorate from the University of Phoenix in organizational leadership. She has taught nonprofit board leadership development, strategic planning, and nonprofit management courses for the past 15 years and is available to provide consulting on a limited basis in these areas through HandsOn Jacksonville.

Lynn Mora is the Blueprint for Leadership Director and the Community Outreach Director for HandsOn Jacksonville. She attended Gulf Park College for Women and Jacksonville University. Lynn has had a life long interest in other cultures and has been on the board of the Multi-Cultural Network and a member of the Jacksonville Asian American Association. She has volunteered for ArtReach; brAIDS; WJCT Public radio and television; Theatre Jacksonville and YMCA among others. Lynn was a member of IABC, the First Coast Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators and served on the board as the Vice President of Volunteer/Chapter Involvement.

After 14 years of phenominal service to HandsOn Jacksonville, Lynn will be retiring this year. While we will miss her terribly, the staff and board of HandsOn Jacksonville are grateful for her many years of dedication to the organization and wish her all the best!
