Blue Series Software User’s Guide

This guide describes the installation and the use of Blue Series software.Blue Series software consists of the PC-to-Blue and Nordson ConfigurationManager (NCM) utilities. Using these utilities you can:

� View and change melter settings

� Transfer operating parameters and temperature set-points betweenmelters

� Upgrade or reload your melter’s firmware

For more information about the NCM and the PC-to-Blue utilities, refer toUsing PC-to-Blue and Using Nordson Configuration Manager later in thisguide.

Software Availability If you do not already have the Blue Series software, you can download itfrom the internet by navigating to www.enordson.com/software.

If you do not have a connection to the internet, you can request a BlueSeries software CD from your Nordson representative.

System Requirements The following hardware and software requirements are necessary to installand run Blue Series software:

� Any ProBlue adhesive melter or a DuraBlue 10/16 adhesive melter

� Serial cable

� Personal computer with:

� CD-RW drive or 3.5-inch floppy drive

� Available COM port

� 640 x 480 color monitor

� Windows 95, 98 (second edition), XP, or 2000

� Internet Explorer version 4.0 or later (IE 5.0 is recommended)

� Administrative privileges (Windows XP and 2000 only)

Installing the Software To meet your specific installation conditions, two versions of the softwareare available. Refer to Table 1 to determine which version you need.

Table 1 Blue Series Software Versions

Version Use When...

Single installation file:

BlueSeries.exe

You are downloading the software from www.enordson.com and the PC you aredownloading onto is connected or can be connected to the melter

OR

You are downloading the software from www.enordson.com onto a PC that can not beconnected to the melter, but the PC does have a CD-RW and the PC that is connectedto the melter does have a CD drive

OR

You have a CD with the software and you have a PC with a CD drive that can beconnected to the melter

Self-extracting span diskette set:

BlueSeriesSpan.exe

You are downloading the software from www.enordson.com onto a PC that cannot beconnected to the melter and the PC that is connected to your melter only has a 3.5-inchfloppy drive

When the installation file is executed, an installation wizard will detect youroperating system and start the installation routine.

NOTE: Installing the NCM for the first time also installs the latest version ofthe melter’s firmware.

To install Blue Series software

1. Do one of the following:

� If you are installing using the single file installation, locate anddouble-click on the file BlueSeries.exe.

� If you are installing from the span diskette set, insert Disk 1, andthen locate and double-click on the file Setup.exe.

The Blue Series Software Setup wizard appears.

2. Click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions. If you areinstalling from the span disk set, you will be prompted to insert additionaldiskettes (2 through 5) as required by your operating system.

NOTE: When prompted to select an installation location, NordsonCorporation recommends that you select the default location offered.

3. When the installation complete message appears, click Finished.

4. (Optional) If you chose to install PC-to-Blue, go to Setting UpPC-to-Blue.

Removing the Software from Your PCUse the Remove feature provided by the Blue Series InstallShield� Wizardto remove the software from your PC. Removing Blue Series software fromyour PC will not remove melter settings files that you have saved using theNCM. Settings files (.ncm extension) are stored in your Windows MyDocuments folder.

NOTE: Windows XP/2000 users must have administrator rights to removesoftware from their PC.

To remove Blue Series software:

1. From the Windows Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel, andthen double-click Add/Remove Programs.

The Add/Remove Programs dialog box appears.

2. Select Blue Series Software from the list, and then click Remove.

Removing Communications Connections Removing the software from your PC does not remove PC-to-meltercommunications connections that you set up in Windows (Refer to SettingUp PC-to-Blue). Communications connections must be removed manuallyas follows.

Remove the PCtoBlue Connection

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, select Internet Options, and then select theConnections tab.

3. In the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings list, selectPCtoBlue, and then click Remove.

4. Click OK twice.

Remove the Serial Cable Connection

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings > Control Panel, and thendouble-click the Modems icon.

2. Select Direct Connection, and then click Delete.

3. Click OK.

Setting Up PC-to-Blue In order for your PC to communicate with your melter, you must firstcreate/setup the appropriate Windows communications functionality.The functionality that you must create/setup depends upon the version ofWindows that you are running on your PC.

Refer to the heading that describes your operating system.

Windows 95 and 98 (second edition)

Create a Direct Serial Cable Connection

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings > Control Panel, and thendouble-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

The Add/Remove Program dialog box appears.

2. On the Windows Setup tab, in the Components list, selectCommunications, and then click Details.

The Communications dialog box appears.

3. Select the Dial-up Networking and Direct Cable Connection checkboxes, and then click OK twice to close the open dialog boxes.

4. If prompted for the Windows installation disk, click OK, and then click Browse.

NOTE: If you have previously created a direct serial cable connection,skip steps 5 and 6. Go to Configure SLIP Communications.

5. Navigate to:

C:\Program Files\Nordson\BlueSeriesSoftware\PCtoBlue

NOTE: Folders names may appear truncated as Progra~1 andNordso~1.

6. Click OK twice.

The required files are installed.

If a version conflict message appears, click Yes to keep the currentversion of all files.

Leave the control panel open.

Configure SLIP Communications

1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

2. On the Windows Setup tab, click Have Disk.

The Install from Disk dialog box appears.

3. Click Browse, and then navigate to:

C:\Program Files\Nordson\BlueSeriesSoftware\PCtoBlue

NOTE: Folders names may appear truncated as Progra~1 andNordso~1.

4. Click OK twice.

The Have Disk dialog box appears.

5. Select the SLIP and Scripting for Dial-up Networking check box, andthen click Install.

The required files are installed.

6. Click OK to close the dialog box. Leave the control panel open

Install the Direct Cable Connection Modem

1. On the control panel, double-click the Modem icon.

2. Do one of the following

� If the Install New Modem wizard appears, select the Don’t detectmy modem..., and then click Next.

� If the Modems Properties dialog box appears, click Add.

� If the PCMCIA dialog box appears, click Other, and then Next.

The Install New Modem dialog box appears.

3. Click Have Disk.

The Install From Disk dialog box appears.

4. Click Browse, and then navigate to:

C:\Program Files\Nordson\BlueSeriesSoftware\PCtoBlue

NOTE: Folders names may appear truncated as Progra~1 andNordso~1.

5. Click OK twice.

The Install New Modem wizard appears.

6. In the Modem list, select Direct Connection, and then click Next.

7. In the Select the Port to Use... list, select the COM port that you willuse to connect your PC to your melter, and then click Next.

8. In the area code box, type 111, and then click Next.

9. Click Finish.

10. Click OK to close the dialog box. Leave the control panel open.

Create the PC-to-Blue Connection

1. On the control panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.

2. On the Connections tab, click Add.

The Make New Connection wizard appears.

3. Do the following:

� In the connection name box, type PCtoBlue.

� In the Select a Modem drop-down list, select Direct Connection.

4. Click Configure.

The Direct Connection Properties dialog box appears.

5. Do the following:

� In the Maximum Speed drop-down list, select 9600.

� Select the Only connect at this speed check box.

6. On the Connection tab, in the Connection preferences group, select:

� Data Bits–8

� Parity–None

� Stop Bits–1

7. In the Call Preferences area, deselect all check boxes.

8. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Connection Settings dialog box appears.

9. Deselect the Use Error Correction, Use Flow Control, and Record a LogFile (Append to Log in Windows 98) check boxes, and then click OKtwice.

10. Click Next.

11. Type 111 in the area code box and 111 1111 in the telephone numberbox.

12. Click Finish. Leave the dialog box open.

Configure SLIP

1. Open the Connections tab, and then do one of the following:

� If you are running Internet Explorer 4.0, select the Connect to theinternet using...check box, and then click Settings.

� If you are running Internet Explorer 5.0, select theDial whenever.. check box, select PCtoBlue, and then click Settings.

The PCtoBlue dialog box appears.

2. In the Dial-up Settings area, click Properties.

The PCtoBlue properties dialog box appears.

3. On the Server Types tab, do the following:

� In the Type of Dial-up Server drop-down list, select SLIP: UnixConnection.

� In the Advanced Options area, select the Logon to Network checkbox.

� In the Allowed Network Protocol area, select the TCP/IP checkbox.

4. Click TCP/IP properties.

The TCP/IP Settings dialog box appears.

5. Select the Specify an IP Address check box, and then type 192.6.94.2 inthe IP Address box.

6. Select the Specify name server address check box, and then type192.6.94.5 in the Primary DNS box.

7. Deselect the Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway...check boxes.

8. Click OK to close each of the open dialog boxes, and then close thecontrol panel.

Windows NT

Create a Direct Serial Cable Connection

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings > Control Panel, and thendouble-click the Modems icon.

The Install New Modem wizard appears. If the wizard does not appear,click Add.

2. Select the Don’t detect my modem...check box, and then click Next.

3. In the models list, select Dial-up Networking Serial Cable Between twoPCs, and then click Next.

4. In the COM port list, select the COM port that you will use to connect thePC to your melter.

5. Click Next, and then Finish.

The Modems Properties dialog box appears.

6. Click Close.

Configure the Remote Access Service

1. On the control panel, double-click the Network icon.

2. On the Services tab, do one of the following:

� If the Remote access service component is available in the NetworkServices list, select it, and then click Properties.

Click Continue.

� If the Remote access service component is not available, click Add,and then select Remote access service.

Click OK.

The Windows NT Setup dialog box appears.

3. Type C:\Program Files\Nordson\BlueSeriesSoftware\PCtoBlue, and thenclick Continue.

The required files are installed.

4. Click OK.

The Add RAS Device dialog box appears.

5. In the RAS Compatible Device list, select Dial-up Networking SerialCable Connection, and then click OK.

The Remote Access Setup dialog box appears.

6. From the Remote Access Setup dialog box device list, select Dial-upNetworking Serial Cable..., and then click Configure.

The Configure Port Usage dialog box appears.

7. Select the Dial out and Receive calls check box, and then click OK.

8. Click Continue.

The RAS Server TCP/IP Configuration dialog box appears.

9. Click OK.

The remote access server is installed. Click OK.

10. Close the Network dialog box.

The required files are transferred.

11. If prompted, restart your PC.

NOTE: When the PC restarts, you will need administrator rights to logon.

Configure Up Dial-Up Networking

1. From the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon, andthen the Dial-Up Networking icon.

2. Do one of the follow:

� If the Location Information dialog box appears, type 111 in the areacode box, and then click Close. If an empty phone book promptappears, click OK.

� If the Dial-up Networking dialog box appears, click New

The New Phonebook Entry Wizard appears.

3. In the phone book name box type PCtoBlue , and then click Next.

4. Select The Non-Windows NT server... check box, and then click Next.

5. In the phone number box, type 111 1111, and then click Next.

6. Select Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), and then click Next.

7. Select None, and then click Next.

8. In the My IP address box, type 192.6.94.2, and then click Next.

9. In the DNS Server box, type 192.6.94.5, and then click Next.

10. Click Finish, and then Close.

Configure SLIP

1. Double-click the Control Panel icon, and then double-click the Internet(Options) icon.

The Internet Properties dialog box appears.

2. Select the Connections tab, and then do one of the following:

� If you are running Internet Explorer 4.0, select the Connect to theinternet using...check box, and then click Settings.

� If you are running Internet Explorer 5.0, select theDial whenever.. check box, select PCtoBlue, and then click Settings.

The PCtoBlue Settings dialog box appears.

3. Click Properties.

The Edit Phonebook Entry dialog box appears.

4. On the Basic tab, click Configure.

The Modem Configuration dialog box appears.

5. Make the following settings:

� Initial Speed–9600

� Deselect the Enable hardware flow check box

Click OK.

6. On the Server tab, in the Dial-up server type list, select SLIP: Internet.

7. Click TCP/IP Settings.

The SLIP TCP/IP Settings dialog box appears.

8. Deselect the Force IP header compression and the Use default gatewayon remote network check boxes, and then click OK.

9. On the Security tab, select the Accept any authentication...check box,and then click OK three times to close the open dialog boxes.

Windows 2000 and XP

Create a Dial Up Connection

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings > Control Panel, and thendouble-click the Network and Dial-up Connection icon.

2. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.

The Network Connection wizard appears.

3. Click Next.

4. Select the Connect directly to another computer, and then click Next.

5. Select the Guest , and then click Next.

6. In the device list, select the COM port that you will use to connect yourPC to your melter, and then click Next.

7. Select the For all users, and then click Next.

8. In the connection name box, type PCtoBlue, and then click Finish.

The Connect PCtoBlue dialog box appears.

9. Click Properties.

10. In the Select a Device drop-down list, select Communications cablebetween two computers, and then click Configure.

The Modem Configuration dialog box appears.

11. In the Maximum Speed drop-down list, set the speed to 9600.

12. Deselect the Enable hardware flow control check box, and then clickOK.

13. On the Options tab, deselect the Prompt for name and password checkbox.

Using PC-to-Blue PC-to-Blue is launched from your Windows desktop using the icon shown tothe left.

Use PC-to-Blue when you want to...

� Simultaneously view the actual temperatures of every heatedcomponent

� Simultaneously view the current value of every operating parameter

� Control your melter without using the melter’s control panel

PC-to-Blue communicates with your melter through a PC connected to yourmelter’s serial port. When you launch PC-to-Blue, it automaticallyestablishes communications with your melter’s web server and loads themelter’s home page into Internet Explorer.

Establishing PC-to-Melter Communications

1. Ensure that the melter is switched on.

2. Do one of the following:

� If you are running Internet Explorer 4.0, click Start > Settings >Control Panel > Internet Options. Confirm that Connect to theinternet using...is selected.

� If you are running Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher and your PC isconnected to a local area network, disconnect the network cablefrom your PC.

3. On the Windows desktop of the PC, double-click the PC-to-Blue icon.

The Windows Dial-Up Connection dialog box appears.

4. Select PCtoBlue from the Connect to drop-down list.

5. Click Connect.

One of the following occurs:

� Windows 98 users—The Windows terminal dialog box appears.Click Continue.

The melter’s home page opens inside Internet Explorer.

� Windows XP/2000—The melter’s home page opens inside InternetExplorer.

Using the Browser Interface Using Internet Explorer as a control interface, you can review or change allmelter setting without using the melter’s control panel. You can navigate,scroll, enter values, and make selections as would in any web browserinterface.

NOTE: When you are finished using the browser interface, close InternetExplorer. If prompted to end the connection, click Disconnect Now.

Using Nordson Configuration ManagerConfiguration Manager is launched from your Windows desktop using theicon shown to the left.

Use Configuration Manager when you want to... � Copy melter settings from one melter to another melter

� Create and save more than one version of melter settings

� Upgrade or restore a melter’s firmware

Configuration Manager communicates with your melter through a PCconnected to your melter’s serial port. Once connected, ConfigurationManager offers the choice of saving settings, restoring settings, orupgrading the melter’s firmware.

The first time you download and install Configuration Manager, the latestversion of the melter’s firmware is also downloaded.

Saving and Restoring Melter Settings Saving settings copies all current set-point and operating parameter valuesto your PC. Saved settings can be transferred back to the same melter or toany other compatible Blue Series adhesive melter.

To save melter settings

1. Place the melter into the configuration mode by simultaneously pressingthe Standby and Setup keys.

“COnF” appears in the right display.

2. Double-click the NCM icon on the Windows desktop.

The NCM dialog box appears.

3. Click Select Device.

The Select Product dialog box appears.

4. Select your melter from the list, and then click Ok.

The Select COM Port dialog box appears.

5. Select the COM port you are using to connect to the melter, and thenclick Ok.

The PC and melter establish communications and a picture of the melteryou selected appears in the device status area. The right side of thestatus area indicates “CONNECTED”.

6. Click Save Settings.

The Save As dialog box appears.

NOTE: The default location for saving settings files is Windows MyDocuments folder. To avoid loosing saved settings files, NordsonCorporation recommends that you do not change the default savelocation.

7. Type a file name to identify the group of settings you are saving, andthen click Save.

The save settings progress bar indicates the status of the save. Whenthe save is complete, the melter automatically returns to the scan mode.

NOTE: If you are using the NCM to save multiple variations of meltersettings, use a file naming convention that will allow you to easilyassociate each settings file (.ncm extension) with its related process orend-use.

8. Click Ok to close the NCM.

To restore melter settings

1. Follow steps 1 through 5 of To save melter settings.

2. Click Restore Settings.

The Open dialog box appears.

3. Select the settings file (.ncm extension) that you want to restore, andthen click Open.

The Restore Settings progress bar indicates the status of the restore.When the restore is complete, the melter automatically returns to thescan mode.

Upgrading or Restoring Melter Firmware Use the NCM to upgrade your melter to a newer version of firmware orreload the current version of the firmware. The version of Blue Seriesadhesive melter firmware that is currently available is posted on the internetat www.enordson.com/software.

NOTE: The version of firmware that is loaded on your melter appears onthe control panel when the melter is first switched on.

During the upgrade process, all current melter settings are downloaded andsaved on your PC. After upgrading or restoring a melter’s firmware, you canuse the NCM to restore the pre-upgrade settings.

CAUTION: The upgrade process returns the melter’s settings to factoryconfiguration, with the exception that current heater hours data is saved.Data in both the fault log and the change log is lost after upgrading thefirmware.

To upgrade or reload melter firmware

1. Connect your PC to the melter. Refer to Connecting the PC and Melterearlier in this guide.

2. Place the melter into the upgrade mode by switching the melter off andthen on again, and then immediately pressing both the Setup and leftdisplay Scroll key.

UPLOAd appears in the right display.

3. Double-click the NCM icon on the Windows desktop.

The NCM dialog box appears.

4. Click Select.

The device dialog box appears.

5. Select your melter from the list, and then click Ok.

The Select COM Port dialog box appears.

6. Select the COM port you are using to connect to the melter, and thenclick Ok.

The PC and melter establish communications and a picture of the melteryou selected appears in the device status area. The right side of thestatus area indicates Connected.

7. Click Upgrade.

The Select Upgrade dialog box appears.

8. In the Available Upgrades list, select the firmware version you want toupload to the melter, and then click Ok.

The upgrade warning message appears.

9. Click OK.

The Upgrade in Progress dialog box appears. The upgrade can takeas long as 10 minutes. When the upgrade is complete, the Successdialog box appears and the melter restarts.

CAUTION: Once the uprade progress bar appears, do not interrupt theupgrade process for any reason. Interupting the upgrade can corrupt themelter’s firmware, which will require replacement of the IC chip(IC service kit P/N 1018817).

10. Click OK.

The communications link between the melter and the PC is terminated.

11. Do one of the following:

� To restore pre-upgrade melter settings, go to To restore pre-upgrademelter settings on the next page.

� To close the NCM, click Exit.

� To restore melter settings other than the settings that were in use bythe melter before the upgrade, go to Saving and Restoring MelterSettings earlier in this guide.

To restore pre-upgrade melter settings

Troubleshooting

Using Nordson Configuration Manager Symptom/Message Action

After selecting a device and the COM port, an Access Deniedmessage appears.

PC-to-Blue communications may be running or anotherapplication may be using the COM port. Close Internet Explorerand end the communications connection (if prompted). Close allother applications.

Melter in UPLOAd mode, the update process has not beeninitiated, and you want to stop and exit the UPLOAd mode, butyou cannot get the melter out of UPLOAd.

Cycle power to the melter at the local power disconnect switch.

CAUTION: Ensure that the firmware update process is notrunning before taking power off of the melter.

UPLOAd does not appear on the melter’s display when youpress the Setup and left display scroll keys.

You must cycle the control switch while holding the Setup andleft display scroll keys.

Attempted a firmware update, but the melter display stillindicates UPLOAd.

OR

Attempted a firmware update, but the PC has stoppedresponding or was interrupted during the update process.

Using the local power disconnect switch, cycle power to themelter, and then re-attempt the update.

If the update is unsuccessful or the melter will not reboot, thecentral processor chip may be corrupted. Replace the CPUboard.

Using PC-to-Blue Symptom/Message Action

With Internet Explorer 5.0 installed, the PC will not connect withthe melter.

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options. On theConnections tab, make sure that Dial whenever a networkconnection is not present is selected. If present, disconnect thenetwork cable from the PC and try again.

You are using Internet Explorer 4.0 and the PC will notcommunicate with the melter.

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet. On the Connectionstab, make sure that Connect to the internet using a modem... isselected. If present, disconnect the network cable from the PCand try again.

The PC-to-Blue icon does not appear on the Windows desktop. PC-to-Blue may not have been installed. Run the installationprogram again.
