R.I.P.

January was a sad month for blues lovers, as two giants of the art form left this earthly plane within three days of one another. Their early careers were closely entwined. Johnny Otis (12/28/1921-1/17/2012) was the son of Greekimmigrants who as a young man decided to identify himself asa member of the black musical community. He was a pianist, drummer, vibraphonist and music impresario who launched thecareers of many R&B greats including Jackie Wilson, HankBallard, Little Willie John, Little Esther Phillips, the Robins(who later became the Coasters), and his guitarist son,Shuggie Otis. He is most well known for Willie and the HandJive, a huge hit in 1958. Otis gave Etta James her start as a teenager in 1955 when herecorded Roll with Me, Henry, later known as Dance withMe, Henry due to censorship concerns, and Wallflower, which became a smash hit. Etta forged her mothers signatureon a permission slip so that she could tour with the JohnnyOtis Revue.

The Johnny Otis Revue, with an ever-changinglineup, was active through the early 90s, withoutJohnny near the end. He was inducted into the

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Johnny spent his later years leading his own church andraising organic apples. Etta James (1/25/1938-1/20/2012) got her start as a teenagerwith the Johnny Otis Revue. She went on to huge success witha string of hits recorded for the Chess label, including AtLast, All I Could Do Was Cry and A Sunday Kind ofLove. Her success continued with hits like Somethings GotA Hold on Me, Tell Mama and Id Rather Go Blind. Ettas career faltered as she struggled with long-term heroinaddiction, however, she emerged revitalized in the 1980s andtoured and recorded regularly. Her last recording reached theshelves just a few months prior to her death from leukemia andother medical complications. Though she never topped thecharts again, her performances remained powerful and moving. Etta published her memoir, Rage to Survive in 1998. She wasinducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and theBlues Hall of Fame in 2001 and won numerous Grammy Awardsand Blues Music Awards throughout her career.

Ettas soulfulness and forceful delivery sether apart from all other soul/blues vocalists. She essentially defined the genre. There will

never be another Etta James.

A Chat with Steve Burns of Burnsvillerls: Burnsville Band was formed in 2007, and as it canhappen with bands that have been performing for anylength of time, the band has gone through severalmetamorphosis. Give me a little history and tell me about themost recent of the changes that have brought you and theband to where and what youre doing today. Not just aboutthe member changes but the energy, direction, the evolutionof the music.SB: Due to personal and professional differences, the bandlineup changed after four years, but also the bandsdirection when Scottie Blinn joined. Things just meshedreally well and we had so much fun we just kept it that way.We took on a more stripped down version of the band, simplifying the sound by going to a more traditional blues-rock-swing-roots feel while keeping the high energy up thatBurnsville is known for. We constantly challenge each otherto raise the bar, play better, refine and become bettermusicians on and off stage and weve become such greatfriends besides. The direction is focused on being tight, more professionaland picking material that is well suited for us as players. Weare having more and more fun all the time doing it. It seemsit gets better and better all the time.rls: Who has had the most influence in your music and howis that reflected within the band - The composing, songwriting, songs you choose to perform and the creativedirection?SB: Were influenced by many of the greats of rock andBlues, old and new, while exploring our own roots andbringing out what we do naturally on our instruments, beinghonest and true to ourselves, not trying to imitate andplaying appropriately for the music. Its working and reallyfulfilling. We are, as a band, collaborating on new original material. We plan on releasing an all original CD in 2012 and hope dosome touring and keep on writing and recording.rls: The band plays out quite a bit, is there any oneperformance that really sticks out in your mind?SB: This last year has been truly a really fun Experience. The fresh new direction has been enlightening. We playwith such fire and intensity now, more than ever before.

CD ReviewsCONTINOBack Porch DogmaBlind Pig Records

Music comes in manycolors and Im so glad itdoes. This CD opens upright out of the gatechugging right down thestreet, with the toetapper, Rotgut Run. Upnext is Big Tent, apercussive, drum-stick-

click, hand clapping tune, that includes a Maria Muldaur vocal. I cant say enough about this well recorded and heartfelt CD.A multitude of different flavors, from start to finish, cooked upjust right to grab your girl after dinner for an evening dance inthe living room. For me it was just the lift I needed to forgetabout life for a while. Thanks, guys! Contina is Pete Contino on accordian and vocals, RobEdwards on upright bass, Al Ek on guitar and vocals, JimLovgren on drums and Billy Trutt on keys. ~ Phil Diiorio

SAVOY BROWNVoodoo MoonRuf Records

I put this CD in mytruck player and havehad it there for thepast two weeks and Ikeep wanting to listento it. Its got someinterestingarrangements andbeing the blues rock fan that I am, it suites my taste well. Go-to songs for me are the first track, Shockwave, whichkicks off with a nice one chord, upbeat shuffle that has somegood licks and points to a cool drivin feel; Track two, NaturalMan, a groovy minor blues; Track four, Shes Got The Heat,a straight up rockin, sweet slide-guitar on this one; Tracknine, Voodoo Moon, shows the blues rocker that lives in theroots of Kim Simmonds. All and all a great CD worthy ofhaving in your collection. ~ Steve Burns

JAMESARMSTRONGBlues AtThe BorderCatfood Records

James Armstrongsstrong musicalupbringing is nosurprise listening tothis tight CD. Born inLos Angeles and well

versed from touring at the young age of 17, James pulls somedownright catchy tunes from his roadhouse bag of bluestricks. The first song, Everything Good To Ya (Aint Good toYa), really gets your hands clapping and before you know ityoure singing along. Next up is a nice Albert King style,Somebodys Got To Pay, to the smooth vibe of Baby CanYou Hear Me, with backing vocals adding a nice touch.Blues At The Border, also the title of the CD, has a swampyfeel. Moving right along to the end of this ride, you forgetabout your troubles listening to James stories along the bluesside of the tracks. James Armstrongs Blues At The Border is a strong, put-together release that any blues lover could be listening to justdriving down the road or sitting at home for a night in with abottle of wine and your lady by your side. ~ Phil Diiorio

BIG DOG MERCER, DANNY BARON,BRANDON SANTINI, TOM HOLLAND

The Blues AnEvolutionElectro GlideRecords

This album is ElectroGlides firstcompilation CDentitled The Blues, AnEvolution. Therelease showcasesthe talents of fourartists: Big Dog

Mercer, Danny Baron (Danny and the Devils), and BrandonSantini and Tom Holland (The Shuffle Kings). This well-rounded, all original song CD joins an emerging artist withthree veteran artists. The album is described by Terry Lape,President of Electro Glide Records, as Americana, but thereis also a strong blues-rock influence, as well as a couple goodshuffle tunes. This collection of blues played from the hearthas something for everyone. Give it a listen. ~ Jack Naughton

You cant fake this music. You might be a great singer or a greatmusician but, in the need, thats got nothing to do with it. Its how you

connect to the songs and to the history behind them. ...Etta James

This new band has had so many great gigs they all have beenfavorites. We just love to perform and turn people onto our brand- They seem to really dig it and thats what makes it worthwhilefor us.rls: What are the future plans for Burnsville - Your vision for thenext one to five years?SB: Our one year goal is to keep working, gig-testing new songs, while we finish our CD and do some out-of-town shows. Werealso working on a theatrical blues show (details to come). The five year plan is to continue writing and recording, still bealive, growing, learning, striving and continue to live with thepassion we share for being a musician.rls: What shows are coming up for you in the next month?SB: Among many other gigs, we continue to be the housefavorite at the House of Blues. We have been playing thereregularly since 2008. You can catch us there most Saturdaynights and look forward to more great times there. The Burnsville Band is:Steve Burns, guitar - vocals / Scottie Blinn, guitar - vocalsCharmaine Tam, bass / Joe Haggar, drums
