ROL NEWS: FEBRUARY 2015

Marketing Assistant, Lucy Waldon, was recently lucky enough to embark on a six night cruise, courtesy of Fred. Olsen.

“I embarked Braemar in Southampton for the Canaries by air, land and sea voyage. After three days at sea, we arrived in Lisbon and disembarked ready for our river boat excursion, allowing us to see sights including the Belém Tower and Monument to the Discoveries. I’d been to Lisbon before, but it was lovely to return and see its old town and mosaic pavements again.

With another couple of days at sea, we arrived at the small island of La Palma, known as La Isla Bonita (the beautiful island). With the day at our leisure, before our flight home in the evening, we sauntered the streets and picked up a couple of bargains from the market! The weather was beautiful, so we took advantage and ate tapas al fresco.

Days at sea can be spent doing as much or as little as you like - some are happy to sit in a quiet corner with a book, while others look to cram in as many activities as possible. We learnt the mambo and salsa one morning and spent an evening in our room relaxing with a film. There’s always something

going on. The evenings were the highlight; I loved the comedian and we all enjoyed a post-dinner cocktail and singing along with the resident singer.

The food was exceptional, with so much choice and the staff were amazing throughout - they remembered everything from our choice of drink in the evening, to our names. If you’re looking for a no-fly break to avoid the hassle of the airport, with a traditional style of cruising, I thoroughly recommend Fred. Olsen.”

JENNIE BOND TV PRESENTER, JOURNALIST, CRUISE MILES MEMBER AND AMBASSADOR

JENNIE BOND AND THE READER OFFERS TEAM FORMED A CLOSE PARTNERSHIP IN 2012 WHEN SHE BECAME THE FACE OF CRUISE MILES.

When we asked Jennie why she had chosen this role, here’s what she said:

“Holidays are a real luxury and, in the current climate, we all need to be a little more selective about with whom we spend our pennies.

There is a lot to be said for being loyal and I believe people need a good reason. Cruise Miles is a wonderful excuse to take more cruise holidays, and as a member I can really treat myself, knowing that next time I book I can take advantage of so many great benefits.”

Since beginning her role as an Ambassador, Jennie has attended a number of our exclusive events, and enjoys meeting our clients who share her passion for travel.

CRUISE HIGHLIGHTSPhilipsburg, St. MaartenDutch and French influences are aplenty in Philipsburg, capital of St. Maarten. Art aficionados will cherish the galleries, history buffs will head to the forts, whilst others can simply wander the golden sands of Great Bay Beach.

Castries, St. LuciaThe pretty island of St. Lucia is lush, green and mountainous with golden beaches and emerald seas. Peruse the wonderful range of textiles and mahogany on offer at Castries Market, or take a short trip south and behold the twin peaks of the Pitons. Soufriere’s volcano is sure to be a definite highlight, where you can experience the hot bubbling springs before taking a visit to the beautiful botanical gardens.

St. George’s, GrenadaSailors through the centuries have rated it one of the world’s prettiest harbours and it is hard to disagree. Horseshoe-shaped and set in a volcanic crater, Grenada’s capital and cruise port St. George’s is flanked by two forts, with colourful French colonial style buildings ranged along the front. Known as the ‘Isle of spice’, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and cocoa aromas fill the air.

I was lucky enough to cruise the Ayeyarwady River in Myanmar for the second time at the end of last year. A fabulous experience (of which more below) that I mention here because I got chatting to a lovely American couple who wanted to do a cruise in Norway to see the Northern Lights.

Jane Archer is one of the UK’s leading cruise journalists and the Daily Telegraph Travel’s cruise expert. She has been sharing her experiences with Blue Horizons’ readers for nine years.

Jan e ARCHER

CRUISE EXPERT: JANE ARCHER

Someone had told them Hurtigruten was their only option and they asked if that was correct (being a cruise specialist is like being a doctor - everyone you meet on a ship has a problem, but unlike doctors, I am always happy to try to help!).

While it might once have been the case, that is no longer. Tour companies have been offering holidays to see the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis, to give them their correct name) for years so it’s not surprising that cruise lines have started to cotton on to the fact that it makes a darn good holiday, even if it is Norway in winter and a tad cold. In fact a cruise is the very

best way to see the light show because you are away from artificial street lights.

Despite numerous visits to Norway in winter, I have only seen the Northern Lights once (unfortunately Mother Nature does not perform to order), and that was from land, but the ‘show’ was still amazing.

It’s all to do with gaseous particles in the earth’s atmosphere colliding with charged particles released from the sun’s atmosphere and emitting the dancing lights. No I don’t really understand it either but the point is, if you’ve never seen them, what are you waiting for?

Fred Olsen and Cruise & Maritime Voyages have Northern Lights cruises in February and March. At the time of writing there were cabins left but in case they are booked up, remember there is also Hurtigruten, which has lots of capacity as its working ships cruise daily between Bergen and Kirkenes. Or speak to the folk at Reader Offers now and get in early for 2016.

Mingalabar! That was a greeting I heard a lot on my Ayeyarwady cruise. It is used like ‘hello’, but the meaning is more noble - something like ‘it’s a blessing’.

This was my third time in Myanmar in as many years so I am getting to be something of an old hand there. And there again I was asked another cruise question: ‘Have you ever seen a river cruise get so popular so fast?’ I had to confess I hadn’t.

In 2013 I cruised from Yangon to Bagan with Belmond, the company formerly known as Orient Express, on their then new river cruise boat, Orcaella. Over the next 12 months at least four more new vessels will launch, with APT adding vessel number five when it starts cruising there in 2016.

The company is selling a 14 night cruise from Yangon to Mandalay under its four star Travelmarvel brand on a new vessel, the 72 passenger Princess Panhwar, with daily visits to small villages, pagodas and markets included in the price. There’s time in Yangon to see the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda, and a couple of days in Bagan to

Jane with bell,Mingun

see sunset over the temple-strewn plain.

The itinerary also includes a day in Mandalay, which I visited for the first time in November. At the Kuthodaw Pagoda, I saw the world’s biggest book - 739 stone slabs inscribed with Buddhist scriptures and teachings. Quite incredible. It was started in 1859 and took six years to complete.

I also saw gold leaf beaters - young men who literally hammer at gold ribbons until they become so thin they almost disintegrate on touch - and watched the sun set at U Bein Bridge (it’s the

longest teak bridge in the world) while sipping champagne on a rowing boat on Taungthaman Lake. It was truly magical.

In Mingun, an ox-cart ‘taxi’ was waiting to take me to the village, to see an unfinished pagoda and the world’s second largest bell. As my ox ambled off, I picked up an escort - a young girl walking behind, fanning me now and then to highlight the merits of buying one of her fans.

She told me she was learning English in school (hastily pointing out that as it was Sunday it was a holiday) and also spoke French, German and Italian. While that was true, I discovered she had learned the last three languages from tourists so her conversation was limited to selling fans or postcards.

I wanted neither but had to admire her entrepreneurial spirit!

Happy Holiday for Cruise and MaritimeExciting times at Cruise and Maritime Voyages, which is adding the Magellan to its fleet in March. The vessel started life in 1985 as a Carnival ship called Holiday and more recently has been sailing as Grand Holiday for Ibero Cruises, a Spanish line owned by Carnival.

Blue Horizons | Your Cruise Miles Magazine

Magellan holds 1,250 passengers and will replace Marco Polo as CMV’s flagship. It will be reserved for adults only and have 150 twin cabins - both inside and with an ocean view - set aside for single occupancy at just 25% supplement.

It’s great news for people who travel alone and follows a small but growing new trend in the industry (single cabins were added to Cunard’s Queen Victoria in January, and there are some on P&O Cruises’ new Britannia and Royal Caribbean’s Quantum and Anthem of the Seas).

But it’s not just the cabins and supplement. CMV has also promised to hold welcome cocktail parties and get-togethers for solo travellers to help them meet other people who are travelling alone.

MooreaMoorea’s lush, jagged vistas, encircled by deep blue ocean, resemble a vast

star-shaped garden, branching out into eight valleys. You can walk barefoot

opportunities abound.

TahitiAt the heart of French Polynesia, waterfall laden shadowy mountains and beautiful

black sand beaches make Tahiti a gem in its own right. Explore the lively backstreets and saunter the waterfront in the capital, Papeete. Witness the mystical mountains and learn to dive into transparent lagoons

or visit archaeological sites.

Bora BoraBora Bora is universally revered as the

quintessential holiday destination for hopeless romantics. If its idyllic location isn’t captivating enough, there’s the sheer decadent beauty of

the place: silky stretches of deserted white sand and the rocky black peaks of Mount Otemanu

34 Blue Horizons | Your Cruise Miles Magazine

If you book the wonderful Voyages of Discovery South American Exploration as featured on pages 40 & 41, the canal is only the first of three of the world’s greatest wonders you may encounter. The cruise also offers the opportunity to take in another man-made marvel, the mesmerising Machu Picchu and, should you wish to leave behind these tantalising traces of human endeavour, then an onward voyage to the amazing Galapágos Islands would cap one of the most memorable holidays you could ever imagine. The sights and sounds of a daylight Panama Canal transit will astonish, the history and technology perhaps more so if they weren’t obscured by the sands of time and the surface of its waters. The narrow cuts, with tall lock gates surrounded by manicured lawns, are in stark contrast to the wider meandering channels and lakes along its 77 kilometres. A pipedream for hundreds of years, the knowledge of previous mistakes and the advent of more efficient mechanisation saw the ambitious project finally completed in 1914. From the Atlantic you will pass the ruined forts of Portobelo and San Lorenzo, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The channel narrows and passes through the Americas Interoceanic National Park before opening out into Gatun Lake. Here the Soberania National Park, possibly the most accessible rainforest in the world and resplendent with exotic birdlife, can be found. Then through the Culebra Cut to Miraflores Lake before a series of locks descend down to Balboa and out into the Pacific Ocean, your gateway to further adventures.

Arrival in Callao, Peru, for an extended two night stay means that the intrepid traveller can opt for an overland tour to the incredible Machu Picchu high in the Andes, some 8,000 feet above sea level. While the reasons for building the Panama Canal are obvious and pragmatic, the reasons for founding this fabulous citadel in the cloud-wreathed mountains are more opaque. There are differences of opinion in the academic world as to why it was built and what its function was. Some state it was possibly an Incan city, a temple or a mountain retreat for Incan royalty. Thought to have been built around 1450, it fell into disuse 100 years later, long forgotten until its rediscovery in 1911. The incredible settlement was built using a technique called ‘ashlar’ whereby stones are hand cut and fitted together without the use of mortar, much like a jigsaw. So tight do the stones fit together that it is said that not even a needle will fit between them. When ‘rediscovered’ the site was known to the indigenous population and grazed by local subsistence farmers’ livestock. Now carefully restored to something approaching their former glory, the buildings and terraces match the stunning mountainous Andean scenery in which they nestle; surely one of the most evocative sights on Earth.

The Panama Canal is an integral part of any voyage to the Central American region, a destination in its own right, rather than just a passage between the balmy waters of the Caribbean and the western seaboard of the South American sub-continent.

See pages 40 & 41 for the opportunity to visit the Panama Canal, Machu Picchu & the Galapágos Islands – all in one fantastic holiday!

NIGEL’S

the look on Fred. Olsen Snr’s face when I first told him I proposed to send little Black Prince all the way around Africa! Fortunately both ship and passengers made it safely home, pioneering the company’s development into world-wide adventures.

Some years later, Black Watch was scheduled to call at Easter Island, with Mr and Mrs Olsen on board as passengers. They went ashore on the first tender boat, but it was clear that the swell was too great, and the ship swinging too much to risk trying to land all the passengers. Speaking to a local Chief, Fred. suggested that the company could donate a Buoy as a gift - unfortunately the translator put the offer across as a “Boy”, prompting the Chief to angrily announce that he was happily married! After some clarification about mooring systems, peace was restored, although the passengers never did get ashore on that occasion.

The Pacific Ocean is so vast, covering almost half the globe, that it offers numerous cruise possibilities, albeit involving some of the longest open sea sectors. Planning for nine days at sea was quite a challenge with small ships… food and beverage supplies

would be stretched; deck chair wars had to be managed; the comedian might run out of jokes…fortunately today’s cruise ships are designed from the outset to wander the world,

offering a wide range of choices on board during those long voyages. Why not embark on Celebrity Cruises South Pacific voyage to see for yourself? (pages 30 & 31).

On the subject of the Pacific region, I see that the opening date for the new Panama Canal locks has yet to be confirmed. These massive engineering

projects do tend to run on, so we will have to wait a while yet before we see the Canal opened up to the world’s mega-ships. Transiting the Canal is a great experience; one we will look to repeat once the new locks do open. See page 27 for a fantastic opportunity to transit this man made wonder.

Wherever you are planning to sail, bon voyage!

AT THE TIME OF WRITING THIS WE ARE FINALISING PLANS FOR OUR INDIAN OCEAN CRUISE ON BOARD “BALMORAL”, WITH A PRE-CRUISE STAY, SHORE TOURS DURING THE CRUISE AND A POST-CRUISE EXTENSION. ALL OF WHICH MAKES ME REFLECT ON THE WONDER OF MODERN TRAVEL, WHERE WE CAN TAKE FOR GRANTED THE ACCESSIBILITY OF EXPERIENCES WHICH OUR PARENTS COULD NEVER HAVE IMAGINED!

During my time in the cruise industry we have progressed from quite simple itineraries which departed from a handful of ports to a truly global selection of destinations. The development of new projects was not without risks and some painful lessons along the way… plus some interesting discussions with the ships’ owners. I still wince when I recall

In 1968, Donald was a father-of-four husband with, unfortunately, a failing business in electronics. Fear of bankruptcy spurred him into epic thinking: enter the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race – the first nonstop solo sailing race around the world. With a cash prize equivalent to £65k today, Crowhurst could save his business, and his family.

After securing sponsorship from businessman Stanley Best, he commissioned a three-hulled trimaran. It proved to be swift on a short trial, but was dangerously untested for a voyage of such length. Screws were coming loose and Crowhurst’s navigation was reported as “a mite slapdash.” He fell into the

water “several times” slipping from the outboard bracket. What’s more, with only sixteen days before Halloween’s deadline, he’d little time to prepare and equip. Along with time and financial pressure was the publicity – here was the celebrated novice, an unlikely hero competing against eight of the world’s best sailors. Was he insane? The stakes were high: if he didn’t compete, he’d face financial ruin. If he did, he risked his life.

On the morning of October 31st, the last day possible permitted by the rules, he launched Teignmouth Electron (pronounced TIN-mouth) into the English Channel. Publically he was confident, but his boat was unfinished. By the time he reached North Africa, he realised a vital water pump was missing and a leak had sprung. Two rivals (who’d previously set sail) had already retired from the race, and a third, Robin Knox-Johnson, had run aground. Time wise, Crowhurst was lagging, and in mid-December he radioed home his first deception – that he was averaging 170 miles per day and already “off the coast of Brazil.” In fact, he was still 400 miles north of the equator. One rival, Moitessier, was already past Australasia and fast approaching Cape Horn.

Realising he couldn’t survive the Cape of Good Hope, and certainly not win the race, he cut radio contact with home and drifted around the Atlantic for months, faking his progress in log books. At Christmas, he radioed his wife Clare for the final

GHOSTSHIPS

Not until I finished writing this article did I realise the extent and quality of Donald Crowhurt’s tragedy. It would have been easy to brand this as a ‘great’ ghost-ship story of the 20th century, but the reality is a haunting requiem of one man’s derring-do, desperation and despair; a weekend sailor who took on the Globe, and never came home. FIG.01 - Donald celebrates with wife Clare, but fear belies the fizz.

FIG.02 - Testing the water: Donald on his newly built trimaran.

time before heading into 1969, and ‘the loneliest region of the southern Atlantic’.

Knox-Johnson sailed into spring and into Falmouth harbour, winning the Golden Globe for coming first. The cash prize for fastest, however, was still up for grabs (Moitessier was on his 2nd circumnavigation of the world, having gone a tad loco). By April, Crowhurst had settled his nerves by re-entering the race with a plan to let Nigel Tetley win, thus avoiding log-book scrutiny. He’d sail home ‘almost a hero’, perhaps promoting his business through the press. After 240 lonely days at sea, his sails were lifting as he spirited for home. “What's new ocean-bashing wise?" he radioed, giving his first real position in months. Everyone, including the press, was ebullient. But his deception relied on Tetley’s two week lead. Tetley raced on through a full-blown gale thinking Crowhurst was closing, but resultantly took on damage. Finally, just off the Azores, Tetley’s trimaran sank. News reached Crowhurst, and whilst Tetley was airlifted to safety, Crowhurst was metaphorically sunk.

On July 10th, RMV Picardy was crossing the mid-Atlantic when it came across a ghost boat, a trimaran. A search was launched, but examination of Crowhurst’s log books revealed his probable ending. His deception was uncovered, including his mental deterioration and philosophical graffito.

Whether Crowhurst committed himself to the deep, or slipped overboard through careless exhaustion, will remain the final mystery. For the record, Clare has publically stated “I have always been convinced that Donald didn't commit suicide.”

In the media sensation that followed, Nigel Tetley was awarded a consolation prize and Robin Knox-Johnston donated his £5k winnings to Donald’s family. To this day, Don’s trimaran is beached on the Caribbean island of Cayman Brac.

GIVE YOUR WINTER MENU THE MIDAS TOUCH THIS MONTH WITH BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP – ITS VERY NAME CONJURES COMFORT FOOD, ALL BUTTERY AND VELVETY WITH WARMING NOTES

OF NUTMEG.

This recipe hails from South Africa where Butternut Soup is a national

dish as well as a winter favourite, often served as a starter for meat and

even dished up on safari.

Besides its vibrant flavour, squash is an unsung superfood that’s

packed with antioxidants and nutrients - Vitamins C, E and B6 for

starters, including Potassium, Folate and Thiamine for boosting the

body’s immune system. If that’s not enough to warm your cockles,

this humble Squash is an economic eat – bulky, affordable and almost

entirely edible: only its stalk is a no-go. And since this dish is puréed

to prep, you can leave the seeds in. So when the weather’s Noir, what

better way to brighten your day than with a bowl of liquid sunshine?

I N G R E D I E N TS
