Our Argument
• Speaker 1 : Laura-Anne Hyndman• What does the motion mean? Definition of
keywords.• How Information Technology has improved living
conditions• Examples through sanitation, the job market and
the food industry
Our Argument (ctd)

• Speaker 3: David Byrne• A world more connected• Internet V’s Libraries• Information is now more widely available
Motion & Definitions
• Society is changing for the better due to the advancements in Information Technology.
• I.T. “is a term that encompasses all forms of technology used to create; store; exchange and use information in its various forms. It’s a convenient term for including both telephony and computer technology in the same word.”
Definitions
• Information:
The act of informing or the condition of being informed; Communication of knowledge.
• Technology:
The science of application of knowledge to practical purposes
Ref: www.dictionary.com
Information Technology
• To us this implies that information Technology could be defined as:
The communication of knowledge for practical purposes.
Improvements in living conditions
• Sanitation in the western world has been greatly improved since the introduction of IT.
• The ‘cesspools’ and street sewerage of 100 years ago has evolved into the hygienic 21st century.
Sanitation
• The public are now more aware of the diseases and harmful bacteria that surround them.
• As such, there is a lower mortality rate due to public sanitation than there was a century ago.

Sanitation
• We can clearly see the improvement in the last 100 years in this example.
Sanitation• Cesspool in the 19th Century -www.translucency.com
Sanitation• Modern Day Bathroom -www.harmonytiles.ie
Jobs
• The introduction of IT has radically changed the job market in the last century.
• The job market is not limited to the same jobs of the last century e.g. Farming, etc.
• Instead there are many fields available for the jobseeker e.g. Engineering, Sciences, etc.
• Also, the employer has a wide variety of educated canditates to select from.

Food
• The development of IT has also affected the basic necessities of life such as the food industry. For example, refrigeration, foreign foods made readily available, genetically modified foods, advances in food preperation, etc.
Food
• The Kitchen
• Instead of the basic tools of the 19th century kitchen, it is now laden with hi tech utensils which make cooking and cleaning more hygienic, convienent and efficient.

Food• 21st Century kitchen with modern appliances • -www.orlandovilla-florida.co.uk
Food
• Convenience these days is paramount, so with the introduction of microwaves, cooking time is greatly reduced.
• With the mainstream introduction of refrigeration into the home, the chance of food related illness has been greatly reduced.
Food• Convenient food at its best
With the invention of the
microwave oven.

Food
• In the recent decades, we have seen the introduction of genetically modified (GM) foods into our society.
• These foods, which are engineered by scientists, give us more options in our daily diets.
Food• GM tomato compared to an organic cherry tomato• -scope.educ.washington.edu/gmfood/
Food• What Are the Benefits? • Genetically modified foods (GM foods or GMF)
offer; • “a way to quickly improve crop characteristics
such as yield, pest resistance, or herbicide tolerance, often to a degree not possible with traditional methods. Further, GM crops can be manipulated to produce completely artificial substances, from the precursors to plastics to consumable vaccines.”
• -scope.educ.washington.edu
The Motion
• These points have shown the motion to be TRUE in that …..
• The quality of life has dramatically changed in the past century due to the introduction of Information Technology.
Speaker 2
• Eoghan Cunneen• How Healthcare is benefiting from IT´s
development
– A brief comparison between 1900 and today– Today's technologies– Other aspects of IT in the Health sector
Point 1• Health in 1900 vs. Health 2004
– “Boys and girls born in 2002 could expect to live to 76 and 81 years of age respectively. This contrasts with the turn of the last century where boys born in 1901 could expect to live to 45, while girls could expect to live to 49.”(Source: Government Actuary’s Department UK)
Point 2
• The technologies of present day Health care– CT scans– MRI scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)– XRay
• Quicker and more accurate diagnosis• Faster action
Point 2• Reconstructive surgery giving “New Hope”
– Prosthetics– Reconstructive surgery– Stem Cell research– Cosmetic Surgery
Point 3
• Australia´s reliance on IT communications in the Health Sector
• 80% of Australia is Outback• Only .75% of this area is populated• What happens in emergency?
Point 4
• So What´s “IT” Gonna Be?
The Motion
• These points have shown the motion to be TRUE in that …..
• Society is now changed and better in the area of health then it was one hundred years ago.
Speaker 3
• David Byrne• How changes in Communications have
changed society.
Point 1
• A World More Connected• Wireless Internet and how it is beneficial• E-mail V’s “Snail Mail”• Mobile phones
Point 2
• Internet V’s Libraries• Quick access to information• Everything available in the same place• Libraries not obsolete
Point 3
• Information is now available, it's up to you what you do with it!
Summary
• Comparing the 19th Century to modern times, we can see how the introduction of IT has greatly improved the quality of living for many people around the world.
• The changes and advancements in medical research have been fuelled by IT and have led to a better practise of medicine and an increase in peoples life expectancy.
• Advancements in communications have come about thanks to IT. These advancements help to connect the world and make people more accessible. Information is now freely available and most people in the western world now have the ability to be fully informed, if they choose.
