MLG’s Message
We are at the start of a new and exciting year for our Pond. This will mark the
100th anniversary of the founding of our pond and we look forward to not only
our usual and well attended events including the Wine Tasting in November,
Toy Mountain in December, the Pool Tournament in April and both Golf and
the Lobster Fest in June, but also a Spring event to honour our history and all
our wonderful PMLG’s.
Our aim for this year is to increase engagement of our membership and we look
to each of you for an increased effort. If you only attended one meeting last
year, try to make two. If you know someone who would make a good gosling,
nominate them. If you have a little time to spare, let us know and we will find
you a job. If you have lots of time we will find you a bigger job. Most of all,
encourage everyone you know to attend our events and to increase our ability
to donate to the many worthy charities we support.
Looking forward to a full-filled and fulfilling year
Your Most Loyal Gander
Isabel McNab

Helping our Edmonton Pond Strive toward the Convention 2018:
As most of you should know by now, the Edmonton Pond will be hosting the 112th International Grand Nest convention in 2018. This event, speaking from our experience from the 2012 convention, takes an enormous amount of fundraising and effort on behalf of the volunteer committee for the convention. One of the Edmonton Pond’s fundraising efforts comes in the form of a print that can be ordered in a variety of sizes or in a canvas gallery wrap. The photo below shows
a sample of the print that was created by member and photographer David Buzzeo. Please contact PMLG Neil
Miller at [email protected] or 780-458-2526 for more information on how to order.
Past Event Recap
Jurgen Mausch Memorial Pool Tourney: held on May 13, 2015 at The Hidden Spot
On behalf of Chair Gander Thannhauser:
I wanted to write to thank you all for coming out to this year’s Jurgen Mausch Memorial Pool Tournament
at The Hidden Spot. It looked like everyone was having a good time: sharing laughs, meeting new people
in the industry, and enjoying the high-quality play at the tables. This year we raised $630 for the Women
in Need Society.
Our winners from 2013, Allan Akins and Jon Andrasz, were able to recapture the cup once again.

I would like to thank the sponsors for their continued support of the tournament: Alberta Fire and Flood, Westcan Appraisals, and Collision Analysis. This tournament would not be possible without them. Alberta Fire and Flood also provided some excellent door prizes for the evening.
Finally, if you have any comments on the tournament or suggestions for improvement please let me know.
Thanks again.

Blue Goose Golf Tournament: held on June 4, 2015 at Lacombe Golf and Country Club
The weather was almost perfect for golfing at this year’s Blue Goose Golf Tournament involving participants from Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary. There were 104 golfers and a few additional guests from our sponsors to round out a great outing and afternoon feast of prime rib and fixings. Winners of the day included Jesse Collins (Alberta Pond) capturing the low net score, and Cam Hiebert and Mark Lunnin securing the low net for the Alberta and Edmonton Ponds respectively.
The attendance was closely split between the Edmonton and Alberta Ponds, with the Alberta Pond’s average net score just edging lower

than that of the Edmonton members. However, the Edmonton Pond members dominated in the skills
department with 4 of the 5 prizes. Thanks to co-chairs Carlene Sorensen and Mike Peck from the Alberta Pond
for organizing and a big thanks to all the sponsors for the event.
Annual Blue Goose Lobster Night, June 10, 2015 held at the Inglewood Golf and Curling Club:
This year’s Blue Goose Lobster Night was another sellout as members of the Alberta Pond and the industry
congregated at the IGCC for a feast of lobster and seafood. “First In Line” provided the evening’s
entertainment to the 180 plus guests who waited patiently for their turn getting in the buffet line. Monies
raised from the event will be donated this year to Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids, which is a lunch program

for kids within Calgary schools that might otherwise go hungry throughout the day of not for this program.

109th Grand Nest Convention, Baltimore:
This year’s annual convention was hosted by the National Capitol Pond in Baltimore, MD, from July 19 to July
22. There was an impressive turnout for this convention and our own Pond sponsored our delegates Lynne
Fawcett and Stanley Winter to attend the event. News reported back to our Pond from the convention
focussed on some discussions that have been going on about potential future changes to the regions,
particularly, reducing the number of regions from 5 to 4. This may impact our Canadian Region, so be sure to
stay tuned and express any of your thoughts or concerns to our executive.

In other news from the convention, this past year saw an increase in overall membership, the second year in a
row of positive membership growth. This is good news for our order which suffered declining membership for
a number of years recently. Also, charitable donations from ponds in the Canadian Region surpassed $100,000
– an impressive figure and one of which to be proud! For more information and to see photos from this year’s
Baltimore Convention, visit: http://www.nationalcapitalpond.com/pond-events/
