This beautiful ballad features alto saxophone, with an emphasis on lyricism and rich harmonies.

The soloist is essential to the success of this chart. Work with thesoloist to develop expressive, smooth phrasing, and encourage them touse some vibrato, especially at the ends of long notes. Listening torecordings of great saxophonists like Cannonball Adderley, Phil Woods,Paul Desmond and others playing ballads will help them to get ideasabout ballad phrasing.

There are many unison figures in this chart. Work to ensure that the figures are right in tune and also pay special attention to the dynamics.There is a place for the ensemble to shine in measures 68-83, howeverin general, the band should not overpower the soloist.

In the double time section, a written solo is provided, however alwaysencourage improvisation. The chord progression, DMA7 to Emi7 to A7,is I to II to V in D major (alto key), so the notes in a D major scale willwork throughout the solo.

Gregory W. Yasinitsky, Regents Professor of Music at Washington StateUniversity, has an international reputation as a composer, arranger and saxo-phonist. He is the winner of the American Prize in Composition and is a memberof the Board of Directors for the Jazz Education Network. Additionally, Yasinitskyis a member of the Washington State Music Educators Hall of Fame and is arecipient of the WSU Eminent Faculty Award, WSU’s top award for faculty.Yasinitsky is a recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment forthe Arts, The Commission Project, Artist Trust and ASCAP. He has written musicespecially for David Sanborn, Clark Terry, Dave Liebman and the USAF "Airmenof Note" big band. Yasinitsky has performed with Randy Brecker, Sean Jones,Tom Harrell, Ed Calle, Alex Acuna, Kirk Whalum, Claudio Roditi, Conrad Herwig,Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Louis Bellson, Stan Getz, LionelHampton, Lou Rawls, Manhattan Transfer, and many others.
