Audited Financial Statements for year ending 31 December 2015 were presented at the last Trustees meeting, held on 31 March 2016.
As forecasted, the surplus after tax is a pretty handsome amount of R4,365,434.00; this in spite of quite a sizeable amount of Capital Ex-penditure, which was well spent on garden and security upgrades.
Subsequent to the finalization of this Audit Report, notice of the AGM (expected to take place in mid-May 2016), will be out soon.
Total number of stands proclaimed to date still remains at 1,339 stands, of which 788 houses have been completed and occupied, with another 176 units under construction.
The next Townships earmarked for proclamation around end May 2016 are Extensions 78, 79 and 80, with a total of 107 Residential stands.
Construction of the Blue Valley Shopping Centre at Extension 39, which started in early January 2016, is expected to be completed by end September 2017.

Welcome to the first edition of our Blue Valley newsletter for 2016 as you all get back into gear following all the holidays in March.
As mentioned previously we hosted the SA Amateur Stroke Play tournament here in the first week of February. A really full field of amateur golfers from around South Africa and the world competed in the 72-hole event.
There were nine international teams as well as the South African players. The course record was broken on day two from 65 to 64. Then again on day three, in the morning field, from 64 to 63. Then in the afternoon it was again broken from 63 down to 62. The standard of the golf course was exceptional and the greens staff need to be congratulated on presenting a true championship course for the tournament.
We received a letter and a commemorative shield from the SAGA thanking the club for the condition of the course and the wonderful experience they all had here at Blue Valley. From my side, I must thank everyone who played a role during the week – your efforts were very much appreciated.
The standard of the golf course was exceptional

presenting a true championship course for the
tournament.

“It turns out that speeding irresponsibly in a vehicle, placing personal wealth ahead of the welfare of others, is one of the greatest sins in the Universe...” Craig Ferguson
Just a reminder to residents that when you invested in Blue Valley you did so for several reasons and one of those reasons was the extent of the contribution made by every resident towards maintaining a pleasant and safe environment.
Unfortunately some of our residents have a total disregard for the safety of others, especially during peak hours when it is obvious that there is a lot of pedestrian activity going on in and around the estate, including by children, but this does not seem to concern them.
The roads in the estate are municipal roads and are therefore governed by the Road Traffic Act. This means that failing to stop at a stop sign and not yielding at traffic circles is an offence, as is exceeding the speed limit.
You are hereby advised that the Estate has the right to impose fines on any person who contravenes a traffic rule, not by virtue by the Estate having any traffic control powers, but by virtue that it constitutes a contravention of the agreement that all Owners entered into with the Homeowners Association. Homeowners are also liable for the conduct of their guests and contractors.
A warm welcome to Glad Nkhomi, who joined the HOA management team and who will be assisting with the day-to-day maintenance duties.
“We would like to raise awareness amongst residents regarding the illegal use of substances among youths living in our estate. It is alarming to know how many under-age children we confronted smoking, drinking alcohol and more recently reported cases of children smoking cannabis around the squash courts and clubhouse areas!
We are appealing to parents to monitor your children’s behaviour, to educate your children regarding the use of illegal substances, and to know their whereabouts and who they are hanging out with! Please do not let your child be a victim of drug abuse.
As circulated, the HOA is in the process of upgrading the existing Security Access System. What will the process be once the system has been upgraded? The new security process will be as follows:
1. The preclearance code issued to visitors will act now as a password.
2. Once the preclearance code is entered on the key pad at the gate a slip will be generated.
3. The guard will then scan the licence disk of the vehicle and the driving licence of the driver. Thereafter the guard will scan the unique number printed on the slip and hand it to the visitor.
4. The visitor will then make use of the unique number to enter and exit the estate.
This will aid the HOA to have a record of all visitors entering the estate.
Please Note: No driver’s licence, No entry rule will apply!
Exciting news: Fibre will soon be launching in Blue Valley. This new technology will enrich the experience of residents living in the estate, giving residents access to faster and more reliable internet that is at the cutting edge.
Installation of Fibre back bone is almost near completion. Communication will be circulated closer to the time when the launch will start.

Clubhouse General ManagerMen’s Captain
Good day to all our Blue Valley Residents and greetings from your Golf Club Captain.
It is almost impossible to believe that Easter is already behind us and we are starting to feel a chill in the air heralding the onset of autumn.
The golf course held up remarkably well during the past summer, which was one of the hottest in recent memory. This is a tribute to the efforts of management and the green keeping staff and our thanks go out to all of them.
By the time this newsletter goes out, we would have probably already completed our Club Championships taking place on the weekend of the 9th and 10th April.
AGM: The golf AGM took place on Wednesday the 13th April in the
clubhouse, the Golf Committee remains the same with Peter Corna as Men’s Captain & Bev Meerholz as Lady Captain.
The course condition at the moment is superb. The rough has really got rough with all the recent rains and one gets punished quite severely if fairways are missed. We have once again got back to a situation where we do not allow placing as the fairways are near perfect. The completion organisers for the recently played SA Amateur Stroke Play event commented that Blue Valley was the first course ever that they never had to mark any areas of the course unplayable due to conditioning issues.
Our league season is in full swing, with the men’s senior scratch and handicap leagues already finished. The ladies have one or two games.
Mixed league, scratch league and mid-amateur leagues start a little later in the year, as do the juniors.
Jacques du Toit is now well established in the pro shop. His range of clothing and equipment is quite extensive, but should there be something specific that you want, he will make a plan and get it for you. He is also doing a great job with his Ladies’ and Junior clinics. Please drop in at the range or the shop for further information.
I look forward to seeing more of our residents out on our beautiful golf course.
I remain yours in golf,
Peter Corna

Clubhouse General ManagerLadies’ Captain
Hello again from your lady captain and welcome to the 1st edition of the Blue Valley magazine for 2016.
Bev Meerholz
I hope you all had a fantastic festive season and I presume you are all back to the grind stone as we are already in April. Can you believe it? Our Ladies’ Xmas competition was held on the 5th December 2015, where we also bid farewell to Petro Meyer and I believe she has settled in very well at Amber Valley enjoying life.
The Xmas competition was a great morning, and we had 12 ladies that played in the pink ball competition. Just a fun day and enjoyed by all.
Thanks, ladies, for the support, and thanks again to Phillip for arranging all the snacks and champagne.

around the world to reduce sugar consumption, which is linked to high instances of conditions such as obesity and diabetes.
South Africa has the highest instances of obesity in sub-Saharan Africa. In a paper entitled The cost of inaction on sugar-sweetened beverage consumption: implications for obesity in South Africa, researchers estimated that the growth in consumption of sugary drinks by 2.4% – the rate at which sales of sugar-sweetened beverages are expected to rise – could lead to an additional
SIN TAX - RAISE SUGAR TAX & LOWER DEATH & DISEASEThere was a time, just a few centuries ago, when sugar was a rarity – an extraordinary, costly luxury like pepper or ginger; it was seen as a way to punctuate the bland monotony of food as well as serving as a useful preservative.
Paradoxically, given the current debate, sugar in those days was also used, on occasion at least, as a medicine. The idea that it could be anything but bad for you would be met with incomprehension. Today, we are seemingly awash with the stuff, and sugar is widely blamed for the explosion in obesity of recent years.
Drinking fizzy drinks is going to cost you more than your waistline. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has just revealed plans to introduce a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, similar to the sin taxes on alcohol and tobacco. In his 2016 budget speech released last month, Gordhan announced plans to introduce a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The state introduced the tax on 1 April 2017 in a bid to “help reduce excessive sugar intake”.
The move is in line with growing action by other governments

1,3-million obese adults by 2017. In the budget review, the Treasury said that “fiscal interventions such as taxes are increasingly recognised as complementary tools to help tackle this epidemic”.
Other countries such as Denmark, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Mexico and Norway, have levied taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages, the Treasury noted.
Could it actually work? Similar taxes have worked in five other countries, with some methods reducing consumption of fizzy drinks by up to one quarter. A sugar tax on fizzy drinks in Mexico cut sales by 12% in its first year.

Chairman’s Report
JAN – A Breath of French Air is a memoir and celebration of the renowned eatery JAN, a South African restaurant in the south of France. The restaurant is a showcase of South Africa’s tradition of hospitality, transported from a farm in rural South Africa to the glamorous French Riviera. JAN, now a one-star Michelin restaurant, is proof that dreams can be lived and how a love for what you do can transform humble ingredients into a masterpiece. Each chapter captures the mood and inspiration of what is served at JAN, and the collection of over 90 recipes covers everything from locally baked breads, amuse bouche and mouthwatering main course meat and fish dishes to what the chefs eat after a long night’s service in a hot kitchen.
The first book in the series, Landy, tells of Jack finding Landy abandoned at the bottom of a field and how they start their new life together.
Veronica Lamond grew up in Durban, South Africa, and has lived most of her adult life in Cornwall, UK. She is the author and illustrator of the well-loved and highly successful Landy series. There are four books in the series so far, with many more in the pipeline.

By Richard PeirceElephants have long been targeted by humans: not only are they killed for their ivory, but their extraordinary strength, intelligence and charisma have seen some of them captured, chained and effectively jailed for life.
Bully and Induna are two African elephants, both orphaned in organised culling operations and destined for lives in captivity. Growing up far apart and quite differently, Bully (a former animal film star) and the less fortunate Induna were both driven to react to their circumstances – Induna even killed one of his carers. Their individual situations reached a point where both were considered to be dangerous animals and were under threat of being put down. This is the true story of their lives. Conservationist Richard Peirce
presents their individual narratives and the twists and turns of their fortunes: the exploitation of these majestic but sensitive animals, how they each came to be trapped in unsuitable ‘employment’ and shunted about from one venue to the next, before finding one another – free at last – on a farm in southern Africa. It’s a gripping story, full of drama, danger, sadness and ultimate rescue.
Richard Peirce is best known as a shark conservationist and is chairman of the Shark Conservation Society and the Shark Trust. He has authored several books, including The Poacher’s Moon - an exposé of rhino poaching. Richard and his wife Jacqui are confirmed nomads who spend half the year in South Africa; their love of wildlife takes them to the bush at every opportunity.
