Marine DrainsBLÜCHER Marine Drains have been developed in conjunctionwith a number of leading shipyards. As a result theproduct offering meets the specific demands of eachindividual installation regardless of the deck construction. All are suitable for welding into the deck, can be fitted witha removable water trap (providing full rodding access fromabove) and are available to suit any floor finish.
As Marine Drains have been developed on the basis of a"modular" principle, many solutions are achievable usingonly a few component parts.
Europipe™ Sanitary Pipework SystemEuropipe™ is a complete stainless steel sanitary pipeworksystem approved for installation in ships. The light weightand fire resistance of the pipes and fittings makesEuropipe™ a natural choice for the shipbuilding industry, where old fashioned, heavy products are being replaced bylighter, easy to install, maintenance free alternatives.
The push-fit joint has been developed in such a way thatEuropipe™ is completely interchangeable between eithergravity or vacuum discharge systems. The benefits of beingable to use the same pipework system throughout thevessel, regardless of the type of system being employed, can offer significant installation savings.
Drainage ChannelsBLÜCHER stainless steel drainage channels are purposemade linear floor drainage solutions for use in galley areas, door openings, plant rooms etc. Drainage channels areavailable to suit all floor finishes with a range of gratingsdeveloped to suit the varying load bearing and flowdemands. Outlets are available with a removable water trapand where applicable filter basket to prevent solidsdischarging into the drainage system. In common with otherBLÜCHER products drainage channels are available in AISI304 and AISI 316L stainless steel.

IntroductionBLÜCHER manufactures an extensive range of floor drains, suitable for light to medium duty traffic, which combineadvanced design, high quality and ease of installation – all atextremely competitive prices.
The BLÜCHER Marine Drain range has been developed on thebasis of a "modular" principle. This means that by employingone of 4 standard lower parts, connecting this to an upper partto suit a tiled, vinyl or painted steel deck and completing theinstallation with a removable water trap, almost any floordrainage solution is achievable. In addition BLÜCHER alsooffers a range of Rodding Eye Points (clean-outs).
ApplicationBLÜCHER Marine Drains are used for the drainage of floor areasand/or discharge appliances in:
(a) Showers(b) Disabled persons showers(c) Toilets(d) Changing rooms(e) Galleys(f) Deck areas(g) Plant rooms
Being of high quality finish, BLÜCHER Marine Drains and clean-outs are often used when an aesthetically pleasing appearanceis important.
FinishBLÜCHER Marine Drains are chemically descaled (acid pickled) inorder to enhance the natural corrosion resistance and provide auniform matt silver finish. Grates are made of polishedstainless steel. A protective plastic cover and/or film isprovided on most grates and should remain in place untilinstallation is complete.
Explanation of Type NumbersAll BLÜCHER Floor Drains have triple three digit type numbers. The first number refers to the product type and the remainingnumbers are dimensional references.
If Stainless Steel grade AISI 316 L is required, add suffix S totype number e.g. 475.200.050 S

SOCKETS AND PIPE SEALING RINGS
4
Europipe™ is joined using a push-fit spigot and socket jointingmethod. The seal between the socket and spigot is referred toas the BLÜCHER lip seal. The BLÜCHER lip seal ensures quickand easy installation of the pipe system and provides awatertight joint with or without pressure on the system. The BLÜCHER lip seal is also suitable for use within gravity orvacuum drainage installations.
Choosing gasketsThe BLÜCHER lip seal is available in three different rubberqualities, each of which is designed to handle different liquidwaste types at varying operating temperatures.
EPDM: The standard BLÜCHER lip seal designed for use ingeneral installations where no oil or gasoline residuesoccur in the discharge water. The EPDM lip seal isversatile, with a wide area of application. The temperature range is -40° to +212° F (-40° to+100° C).
NBR: BLÜCHER lip seal for applications where gasoline or oilresidues may occur in the discharge water (e.g. inconnection with oil and gasoline separation systems). The NBR lip seal should not be used where solventsare present. The temperature range is -22° to + 176°F (-30° to +80° C).
FPM: BLÜCHER lip seal for special applications. This materialhas a high thermal resistance and withstands exposureto oil, solvents and highly corrosive acids. However, the FPM lip seal has only limited resistance againstbutyl acetate, acetone and methylated alcohol. The temperature range is -13° to +392° F (-25° to+200° C).

Material specification - Stainless steel
■■■■■ Stainless SteelThe designation “stainless steel “ applies to a number of alloyswith different properties.Common to all stainless steels, is the fact they contain at least12% Chromium.Stainless steels can be divided into three main groups, and afew mixed types, according to the structure of steels.
The main groups are:• Austenitic• Ferritic• Martensitic
Of these three main groups, austenitic stainless steel is themost important, representing about 90% of the totalconsumption of stainless steel.
■■■■■ The importance of alloying elementsAustenitic stainless steel contains at least 18% chromium and8% nickel, which has given rise to the popular designation 18/8steel. In general, corrosion resistance is increased in line withthe increased chromium content. Alloys with 12-13% chromiumhave a passive layer strong enough to prevent the steel fromrusting when exposed to normal or slightly aggressive media. The alloying element nickel mainly effects the steel's structureand mechanical properties. With a sufficiently high content ofnickel, the structure of the steel is austenitic. This, as opposedto the pure chromium steels (ferritic stainless steels), improvesthe mechanical properties, significantly, such as increasedimpact resistance and ductility, high resistance to thermalstress, and improved weldability. The austenitic structure also leads to changes in physicalproperties of the steel. For instance, the steel becomes non-
magnetic and obtains better thermal conductivity. Nickel alsoincreases the corrosion resistance against certain materials.Molybdenum has the same effect on the structure as chromium, but with a significant positive influence on the corrosionresistance (except against hydrochloric acid). Normally themolybdenum-alloyed steels are designated as acid proof, due totheir resistance to most types of acid.
■■■■■ Why are the steels "stainless"?By adding chromium as an alloy to the steel, a passivatingoxide layer is formed, with a high content of chromium oxide. The oxide layer protects the steel surface against the oxygen inair and water.Stainless steel has the ability to automatically re-establish thechromium oxide layer, if the steel surface is bared. Thisrestoration of the oxide layer will only take place, if the steelsurface is completely clean and free of temper, welding slag, and contamination from tools of ordinary mild steel. If this contamination of the surface is not removed, the steelmay corrode. To prevent this, the steel surface should becleaned after welding and machining. Pickling of the stainlesssteel can do this. The pickling effectively removes all impurities from the surfaceof the steel, and allows re-establishment of a strong, uniformchromium oxide layer. The pickling solution usually consists of 0.5-5 vol. % HF(hydrofluoric acid) and 8-20 vol. % HNO³ (nitric acid) at atemperature of 77 to 147° F (25 to 60° C). This acid solutionremoves the existing chromium oxide layer and any ironcontamination leaving a pure steel surface, which in thesubsequent rinse in water reforms a strong chromium oxidelayer.

Material specification - Stainless steel
■■■■■ Corrosion resistanceAustenitic chromium-nickel steel is resistant to many differentchemical products and most detergents. BLÜCHER drainageproducts are manufactured exclusively from this group and assuch are established for use within the food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, dairy, shipbuilding and commercialcatering industries.
When increased acid-resistance is required, and spot andcrevice corrosion may occur, molybdenum-alloyed chromium-nickel steels (316L) may be used. These acid-resistant steels resist a number of organic andinorganic acids. However, acid-proof steels are only partially resistant tosolutions containing chlorides.
■■■■■ Impact resistanceThe high tensile strength of stainless steel makes the materialresistant to impact damage at all temperatures. Severe blowsto the material may in certain cases cause dents, they arehowever unlikely to fracture the material.
■■■■■ Fire resistanceStainless steel is non-combustible which means that pipes anddrains made of stainless steel may penetrate floor partitionswithout the need for special fire insulation (e.g. intumescent
fire collars). Furthermore, no toxic fumes or substances arereleased from stainless steel in the event of fire.
■■■■■ Thermal stressDue to the very low heat expansion coefficient of stainlesssteel, BLÜCHER drainage products are not adversely affected bytemperature fluctuations occurring in drainage installations. There are therefore no special constraints that determine atwhat temperature BLÜCHER products should be stored orinstalled.
■■■■■ HygieneFrom practical experience in hygienic installations (foodpreparation, healthcare etc.) it is documented that bacterialgrowth on stainless steel is significantly lower than alternativematerials (e.g. plastics). In addition an unused piece ofstainless steel pipe has a very low surface roughness(K=0.00006 in. (0.0015 mm)). This low surface roughnessminimises not only bacterial growth, but also the danger ofsediments building up which may later lead to blockages.
■■■■■ WeightBLÜCHER drainage products are all produced in thin-walledstainless steel sheet making the most of the material’s highweight to strength ratio.

BLÜCHER Metal A/S - Denmark
The CompanyIn 1965, the founder of BLÜCHER started to
produce stainless steel drainage products.
Initially the products were developed to
meet the specific demands of the chemical,
food and beverage industries.
One of these product developments was
Europipe™ a push-fit drainage pipework
system, that is lightweight, easy to install
and offers excellent resistance against
corrosive liquids.
In the early eighties Europipe™ and
specially developed Marine Drains designed
for welding in the deck, were introduced to
the Danish shipbuilding industry. The
benefits associated with the use of these
products became quickly recognised and
BLÜCHER became the first choice supplier for
new build projects in Denmark.
Other European yards quickly followed the
Danish example and today BLÜCHER delivers
to most of the world’s leading shipyards.
A fundamental reason for the adoption of
Europipe™ was the fact that the same system
could be used for vacuum and conventional
gravity drainage systems. In addition
stainless steel requires little or no
maintenance thus saving refurbishment
costs. As a result many ship owners started
to demand Europipe™ when re-fitting their
ships.
ApplicationsThe BLÜCHER sanitary discharge system is
utilised within installations where demands
are made for:
• Hygiene
• Chemical resistance
• Corrosion resistance
• Mechanical strength
• Thermal stress resistance
• Low weight
• Minimal maintenance
• Durability
• Ease of installation
• Fire resistance
MaterialStainless steel is a clean, durable, corrosion
resistant material ideally suited for structures
with a design life expectancy of over fifty
years.
BLÜCHER only uses high performance
austenitic stainless steel. Grade AISI 304 for
hygiene and aesthetic applications, grade
AISI 316 for more demanding corrosive
environments.
All stainless steel components are
manufactured largely from recycled materials
and are 100% recyclable.
FinishAll BLÜCHER products are chemically
descaled and passivated in order to enhance
the natural corrosion resistance and provide
a uniform surface finish.
