What is Britain in Bloom? The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom is a nationwide community gardening campaign to transform cities, towns & villages. With over 2,000 communities taking part across the UK, it is one of Europe’s largest horticultural campaigns. What is Royal Tunbridge Wells in Bloom? Royal Tunbridge Wells in Bloom brings together community groups, businesses, schools and residents to promote imaginative ways to make the town look its best. Tunbridge Wells has entered the South and South East in Bloom competition and over the last 6 years we have been awarded and retained Gold medals. In 2012 our town was invited into the national competition where we were awarded Silver medal. How can your School take part? The competition is open to all schools of Royal Tunbridge Wells. 1. Enter our School Garden Competition. Be creative with the use of space, plants and recycled materials to develop an area with a Butterfly Haven theme. We would like to continue the Wildlife Friendly Garden theme from last year and invite children to design & build a Bumblebee Base or a Solitary Bee Sanctuary. 2. Enter our Tallest Sunflower Competition. Schools will be provided with seeds of a Giant Sunflower, to grow until judging day in July. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, a sunflower grown in Germany holds the record for being the tallest sunflower in the world at 9.17 m (30 ft 1 in)! Will you break the world record? 3.Enter our Bee Art Competition. Encourage children to explore different art media to produce exciting Inside a Beehive posters! What is life like inside of a beehive? Do children know beehive hierarchy and activities? Please use A4 size format and write student’s name, age and name of the school on the back of each picture. The artwork will be judged by Ellen Montelius - artist and beekeeper based in Tunbridge Wells. The best winning posters will be displayed on the library bed opposite Tunbridge Wells Museum and at Bloom Awards ceremony in September. The winners will be invited to visit the apiary at Pepenbury. Would you like to learn more about Bees?This is an opportunity to have a beekeeper prepare and deliver a talk on the subject of honey bees. The main aim is to inform people on the importance of pollinating insects and to encourage people to grow more bee friendly plants. Specific talks can also be tailored to supplement a current topic in school curriculum. Full day cost is £350. For enquiries, please contact Ellen Montelius by email: [email protected]
