What to Feed a Dragonby Kimber Krochmal
I have a new pet dragon. He followed me from a dream. But I can’t tell my mom,It would only make her scream.
I tried to feed him fried rice,But he didn’t like the spice.
So I tried to feed him applesauce,But he said it made his eyes cross.
I tried to feed him gingerbread,But he said it only hurt his head.
So I tried to feed him peanut butter,But it got stuck and made him stutter.
I tried to feed him watermelon pie,But that, he said, he wouldn’t try.
So I tried to feed him sprinkle cake,But he said that would keep him awake.
I tried to feed him last night’s dessert,But he said it made his stomach hurt.
So I tried to feed him some fish,But he really didn’t like that dish.
Then I tried to feed him cheese,That’s when he said “more please.”
Now my mom is wondering why,We can’t keep cheese in the house.I heard her last night telling Dad,She thinks we have a mouse.

Directions:
Today you will be taking the Ohio Grade 3 Reading Achievement Assessment.
The test consists of vocabulary questions and reading selections followed by
questions about each reading selection. Three different types of questions
appear on this test: multiple choice, short answer and extended response.
There are several important things to remember:
1. Read each reading selection carefully. You may look back at the
reading selection as often as necessary. You may underline or mark parts
of any selection.
2. Read each question carefully. Think about what is being asked. Look
carefully at graphs or diagrams because they will help you understand
the question. Then, choose or write the answer you think is best.
3. Use only a #2 pencil to answer questions on this test.
4. For multiple-choice questions, fill in the circle next to your answer choice.
Mark only one answer for each question. If you change your answer,
make sure you erase your old answer completely. Do not cross out or
make any marks on the other choices.
5. For constructed-response questions, write your answer neatly, clearly and
only in the space provided. Answers written outside of the space
provided will not be scored.
6. If you do not know the answer to a question, skip it and go on to the next
question. If you have time, go back to the questions you skipped and try
to answer them before turning in your Student Test Booklet.
7. Check over your work when you are finished.
8. When you finish this section of the test, you may NOT go on to the
mathematics section in the Student Test Booklet.

Waiting for WinterJoan Ripley
By the end of November, Jeremy was ready for winter. Hecouldn’t wait to wear his snowsuit and his fur-lined boots. He couldn’twait to try his new sled. But most of all, he just couldn’t wait for snow.
Every day he asked, “Will it snow soon?”
“Not yet,” answered Mom, packing away piles of short-sleevedshirts. “There are still many leaves on the maple tree. Wait till theyfall off.”
So Jeremy waited till the leaves dropped and settled like a calicoquilt upon the ground.
“Will it snow today?” he asked.
“Not yet,” said Dad, stacking firewood on the porch. “The geeseare still on the pond. Wait till they fly south for the winter.”

Again Jeremy waited. And one day the geese flapped theirwings and flew away in two straight lines, like the point of an arrow.Their honking grew fainter as Jeremy watched them disappear.
It was getting close to Christmas. “Now will it snow?”asked Jeremy.
“It’s not cold enough yet,” Grandpa pointed out, spreading ablanket of mulch over the flower beds. “The chipmunk is still awake, gathering acorns for its winter food.”
Once more Jeremy waited. Soon the pond turned to ice, and thechipmunk went to sleep in its underground nest. Everything was ready. Why didn’t it snow?
One night Grandma tucked Jeremy into bed. “Tomorrow you’llhave snow,” she whispered.
“Are you sure?” Jeremy asked.
“You bet,” said Grandma. “See that halo around the moon? Thatmeans there’s moisture in the air. And besides, I feel it in my bones.”
Jeremy said, “Oh, Grandma, that’s silly.”
But sure enough, that night a cold front rolled down from thenorth, herding a flock of black clouds that huddled overhead.
It began to snow.
Slowly, snow covered the leaves under the maple tree.
Snow covered the ice on the frozen pond.

And snow covered the chipmunk sleeping in its burrow.
It snowed and it snowed all night. Softly. Silently. Steadily.
When Jeremy woke up and saw the wonderful white world, hejumped out of bed.
“Wow! Grandma’s bones were right!” he shouted.
He gobbled down his oatmeal and toast. Then Jeremy zippedhimself into his snowsuit, tugged on his boots, grabbed his new sled, and raced out the door.
The first snow of winter was waiting for him.

The native inhabitants of New Zealand are the Maori(may – OR – ee) people. The Maori people have a tradition of wearingtattoos on their faces, which are called Moko. Only men are permittedto have tattoos all over their bodies; women’s tattoos are restricted totheir chins, upper lips, and nostrils.
New Zealand Maori men perform a war dance using weapons.
The Maori culture is passed down orally from generation togeneration. One of the favorite Maori’s traditions is a war dance, called the Haka. This dance was performed when the Maori peoplewent to war. Originally, New Zealand was a British colony. The peopleof the island, however, fought for their independence and won itin 1907.
Hangi is the name for the way the Maori people cook. A fire isbuilt inside a dug out pit and stones are placed in the fire. Cabbageleaves are then used to cover the hot stones.
