How do they work?
1.
3.
2.
A blind rivet consists of two parts– the rivet body and, within it, thesetting mandrel, as shown in theaccompanying drawing.
1. The rivet body is inserted in a holein the materials to be joined.
2. The tool is actuated and the jawsof the power operated or manualPOP rivetool grip the mandrel ofthe rivet.
3. The rivet is set by pulling themandrel head into the rivet body, expanding it, and forming a strong, tight, reliable joint. At a predeter-mined setting force, the mandrelbreaks and falls away.
Advantages ofPOP Blind Rivets. The ablility to set POP brand rivetswithout the need for access at theback of the work makes their usemandatory in many instances. However, their many additionaladvantages make POP brand rivetsthe logical choice in numerousapplications where the blind-setting feature is not of primaryimportance. Following are some ofthese important POP brand rivetadvantages compared with con-ventional fasteners.
• LOW IN PLACE COSTS. Real or “in-place” costs are often lower thanthose of other fasteners because oftheir speed and ease of application.
• FAST ASSEMBLY. Because POPbrand rivets can be set in seconds.Literally.
• LOW-COST, LIGHTWEIGHT, EASILYPORTABLE TOOLS. Manual orpower tools are easy to take to thework place, reduce operator fa-tigue, and minimize capital expen-diture.
• STRONG, RELIABLE FASTENINGS,INDEPENDENT OF OPERATORSKILL. POP brand rivets don’ttorque out like threaded fasteners, wasting time and material. Correctsetting pressure is predeterminedby the breaking point designed intothe mandrel. So you get uniformlystrong, reliable fastenings the firsttime – all the time.
• VIBRATION-PROOF ASSEMBLY.POP brand rivets won’t back out orvibrate loose and fall out likethreaded fasteners. You eliminatecostly call-backs due to faulty fas-tenings.
• NO SURFACE MARRING. Settingtool won’t slip and mar polished or
finely finished surfaces. No dents, dimpling, or wrench marks.
• EXCEPTIONAL VERSATILITY. POPbrand rivets hold securely in thinor thick, soft or hard materials, ideal for dissimilar materials. Firstchoice for plastics and other easilydamaged components.
• HIGH GRIP AND PULL-UPSTRENGTHS. A POP brand rivetdraws parts together, even when agap exists between parts.
• TAMPERPROOF. Ideal for publictransportation and other public fa-cilities where tampering and van-dalism are problems. Excellent forfastening limited-access panels;authorized personnel with correctequipment easily drill out POPbrand rivets and replace inseconds.
• INCREASED DESIGN FLEXIBILITY.Setting without need for access atback, minimum backup space re-quirements, versatility, and neatappearance are just a few of thePOP brand rivet attributes thatcontribute to design flexibility andimprove the quality of the finishedproduct.
POP offers a full range ofrivets that meet your
fastening needs.

CLOSED-END RIVETS – EXAMPLE: AD44AH
The body diameter of a POPrivet is measured in 32nds of aninch, i.e., 6 size equals 6/32" or3/16" body diameter. The POPrivet gauge is designed to helpyou determine the length ofa rivet. Place the rivet in theappropriate size slot flush to theside of the gauge and measurethe length from under the headto the end of the body, asshown. The length determinesthe maximum grip capability andis measured in 16ths of an inch,i.e., 4 equals 4/16" or 1/4"maximum grip.
