Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people... Galatians 6:9-10

Blessings International has been a tremendous partner to In His Image for many years. As an organization we have been blessed to work with Blessings to bring high quality, life-saving medications and medical supplies to people in great need around the world, including the African continent, Central America, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East. Working with an outstanding, likeminded organization to bring the love of Jesus and His healing power to distant places has been a great joy!

Dr. Mitch Duininck, In His Image Medical Director

This year we are celebrating 35 years of opportunities to “do good to all people!” As we look back at all the Lord has done through this ministry over the years, we cannot help but rejoice and marvel at the opportunities He has given us and the ways He has enabled us to heal the hurting, build healthy communities and transform lives.

Over our last fiscal year, we have continued to have opportunities to “do good to all people.” We were able to ship medicine that reached 107 different nations: more than we have ever reached before (and eight more than the previous year!). We also touched a record number of lives by shipping more than 102 million courses of medical treatments around the world (details on those shipments on pages 4 and 5). Other exciting milestones included launching our Haiti Orphanage Medical Support (HOMS) Program, formalizing Blessings’ Values (see page 11) and reaching our 35th anniversary!

While 35 years isn’t as big a milestone as some anniversaries (apparently it is the “coral anniversary”), this landmark shows that Blessings International is a ministry that has been serving the needs of the hurting for more than three decades. Even more exciting is that we are positioned to continue doing so far into the future. Our core values have helped us grow, and even to thrive, despite the many obstacles we have faced over the years. Fiscal Year 2016 offered challenges in the area of industry regulatory restrictions and restructuring. Author Roy T. Bennett said, “When things do not go your way, remember that every challenge – even adversity – contains within it the seeds of opportunity and growth.” Those seeds are being planted at Blessings today! Through refocusing and redirecting our efforts toward customer service, compliance and quality, we reached or surpassed most of our goals for 2016, including increasing Human Treatment Value of medicines we shipped by more than a half-million treatments over the previous year!

With your help, support and partnership, Blessings International will continue to sow the seeds of opportunity and growth, thereby serving the medical needs of even greater numbers of people in the decades ahead!

Yours in His Service Together,

Barry Ewy, PharmD, JD, MHA Chief Executive Officer

HUMAN TREATMENT VALUE 2013-2016

In our Fiscal Year 2016, the Human Treatment Value (HTV) of the medicines we shipped was 102,122,981! That is more than 102 million courses of medicine and vitamins Blessings shipped to medical teams, clinics and hospitals around the world. Medicine from Blessings went to a total of 107 different nations, more than ever before. You can see in the graph on page 5 exactly how many dosages went to each individual nation.

HTV is measured by totaling the number of medicines shipped that fall into one of two categories: Curative Treatments and Treatment Days.

1. Curative Treatments are defined as one full dosage of a treatment, regardless of how many individual pills/tablets/injections are required. For example, one course of antibiotics to treat an infection may require multiple tablets given to a patient over multiple days, but for HTV accounting purposes it will only be counted as one treatment. Curative Treatments include items such as antibiotics and anti-malarials.

2. Treatment Days are defined by the number of days a medicine is used. Total Treatment Days are the number of pharmaceutical dosages that are used to treat acute or chronic issues (including items such as analgesics, vitamins, anti-hypertensives, etc.). For example, if someone takes one multi-vitamin per day, and Blessings ships a bottle of 500 vitamins, that bottle will equal 500 Treatment Days.

In Fiscal Year 2016, Blessings International shipped medicines with a total HTV of 102,122,981, which included 4,207,150 Curative Treatments and 97,915,831 Treatment Days. The total HTV of the medicines shipped in FY 2016 exceeded the previous year, even though Blessings shipped slightly fewer orders than the previous year.

We thank the Lord that in Fiscal Year 2016 our revenue exceeded our expenses. Through a positive net revenue in our program services, Blessings was able to donate more medicine and funding than ever before to countries, villages and homes where it was most needed. In 2016, we even launched a new program in Haiti called the Haiti Orphanage Medical Support (see details on page 8). By covering our operating expenses, Blessings continues to be able to utilize 100% of every donated dollar to support the benevolence projects detailed in pages 8 through 9 of this report.

The Production Team at Blessings International is responsible for rebottling, repackaging and relabeling items that we purchase directly from manufacturers and other pharmaceutical entities both in the U.S. and abroad. Blessings is licensed by the FDA as a re-packager and is authorized to import medicine and medical supplies for exportation. In 2016, our Production Department recorded a 4% increase in the total number of items it processed compared to the previous year. Interestingly, the number of items that were rebottled, which is often the most cumbersome and time-consuming process, decreased by 40% while the number of items being relabeled increased by 31%.

The Production Team works hard to carefully relabel, rebottle or repackage each item swiftly so that we are able to get the products out to medical teams as quickly as possible. Often, these items, which we are able to buy in bulk, are the most affordable for teams to purchase. By processing more through our Production Department, teams are able to purchase greater quantities of the lower-cost, high-quality medicine and therefore help more people around the world receive medicine they urgently need!

BENEVOLENCE PROJECTS

Haiti Orphanage Medical Support (HOMS)$39,511The HOMS Program launched in January 2016 with the goal of providing regular medical support to around 30 different orphanages. According to various reports, approximately 30,000 Haitian children live in some 760 orphanages scattered across the country. The HOMS Program began by serving three orphanages with a staff of three people, including Debi Lammert, APRN-CNS, a project director and an assistant.

The project has grown steadily and is now serving 17 orphanages caring for more than 750 children. Many of the orphanages care for 12 to 25 children, but one has 225!

The primary purpose of this program is to provide basic medical care for common maladies such as vitamin deficiency, skin infections, malaria and other common ailments in that impoverished nation. A secondary but important purpose of HOMS is to collect data on the children living in these facilities, and to monitor the orphanage to ensure it is providing a sufficient level of care for each child.

Crisis Zone Support Including Iraq and Syrian Refugees, Ukraine and Ethiopia$29,520Sadly, in 2016 wars continued to rage in many parts of the world. Blessings International worked with a number of groups to provide free medicines to refugees and people fleeing war zones and other man-made catastrophes in countries including Iraq, Lebanon, Ukraine, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

Emergency Disaster Relief$9,798Blessings International continues its commitment to supply medical teams responding to natural disasters in developing nations. Often, these teams need to be supplied with medicine quickly so they can treat the injured and those in need of medical care. Blessings’ efforts during Fiscal Year 2016 included assistance to teams traveling to provide relief to Ecuador earthquake victims and tropical storm victims in Dominica.

Malaria and Deworming$50,000Malaria causes more than 400,000 deaths every year, and nearly half of the world’s population lives in areas where the mosquito-borne disease is rampant. Parasitic worms also ravage people, especially children, all over the world. During Fiscal Year 2016 Blessings International gave away anti-malaria medicine and deworming medicine such as Albendazole and Mebendazole to 62 different countries! These nations were located in nearly every part of the globe and ranged from Angola to Chile, Mexico to Myanmar, and Tanzania to Zimbabwe.

USA Clinic Support$66,854Blessings International was initially formed to bring medicine to the hurting in underdeveloped parts of the world. But over the 35 years since Blessings was founded, its leaders recognized the need to serve clinics in the USA that treat those who are underserved or cannot afford healthcare. Through donations, Blessings is able to provide free or heavily subsidized medicines to medical clinics all across the USA.

Clinic Expansion and Support$153,500Blessings International believes in the power of medicine to save and improve lives. An adequate facility and properly trained staff are critical components to saving and improving those lives, and are part of our vision to “build healthy communities.” This fiscal year, Blessings provided support to expanding four facilities including two in Pakistan, one in Nigeria and one in Mexico. Blessings also provided funding for doctors to participate in Christian residency programs located overseas, as well as assistance to help several doctors begin their overseas medical missionary careers.

Blessings International was founded by Dr. Harold Harder and his wife Linda in 1981 to bring medicine and the hope of Christ to the hurting around the world. In its first year, Blessings International served 12 ministries. Thirty-five years later, Blessings serves more than 3,000 teams each year, supplying the medicine and medical supplies they need to heal the hurting, build healthy communities and transform lives all across the earth. In 2013, Dr. Harder retired from Blessings International and Barry Ewy was selected to lead the organization. In 2016, Barry and a team of Blessings’ leaders worked to identify and summarize the values that enabled Blessings to grow over the decades. Blessings’ core values are listed here:

All of Blessings’ employees and Board Members strive to keep these values at the forefront of our ministry, but we know we alone could not have made this ministry into what it has become over the last 35 years without the significant involvement and support of many people. We would like to thank each of you that have ordered medicine or medical supplies, donated to this ministry or prayed for our work to bring healing to the hurting. To each of you, we say, “Thank You!”
