A Lenten Message from Pope Francis

The following is from part of Pope Francis’s Lenten message entitled: “The Word is a gift, other persons are a gift”.

“Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ’s victory over death. This sea-son urgently calls us to conversion. Even when we sin, he patiently awaits our return; by that patient ex-pectation, he shows us his readiness to forgive.

Lent is the favorable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbor. The Lord, who over-came the deceptions of the Tempter during the forty days in the desert, shows us the path we must take.

“May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need. Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing in the victory of Christ, we may open our doors to the weak and poor. Then we will be able to experience and share to the full the joy of Easter”.

Readings for the Week

PROVE IT

What does it take to convince us of the truth? Some of us need simply to hear from a trusted authority. Others need time to think an argument through for them-selves, step by step. Many of us tend to learn the hard way, experiencing life's lessons in dramatic and per-sonal ways. Various kinds of evidence work different-ly on each of us. For the parched and wandering Israel-ites, a miraculous source of water persuades them to return to belief in God. For the Samaritan woman, Je-sus' prophetic knowledge of the intimate details of her life suffices. What will it be for us? What can convince us, forever, that God made us, saved us from death, and treasures us as beloved children? Saint Paul urges us to stop asking for proof; we need look no further than the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He re-minds us how unusual it is for good people to sacrifice themselves for other good people; it is utterly prepos-terous for a good person to give his life for "the un-godly," for sinners. Yet that is precisely what Jesus does for us.

LIVE IT

Our insatiable need for proof is nothing to be ashamed of. Hunger for evidence points to an active intellect. Even after we learn an important truth, we need to nur-ture that knowledge throughout our whole lives. Most of us first heard about Jesus when we were children. We must continue to deepen our understanding as we mature. In a similar way, the Samaritans first believe their fellow townswoman simply because of her testi-mony about Jesus. Then, after encountering him them-selves, they are convinced Jesus is the savior of the world: "We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savor of the world." Personal experience confirms and deepens their faith. "Harden not your hearts," the Psalmist tells us. Let's keep learning from God's signs all around us.

AROUND TOWN

Daily Prayer for Our Priests

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
