WelcomeWelcome to the beautiful Blackstone Valley! Rich in
history that dates back to the 1600s, from our lovely landscapes to our quaint town squares it is quintes-
sential New England, with a focus on the great outdoors. Our heritage and activities grew around the river from which
we derive our name, the mighty Blackstone. Nicknamed “America’s hardest-working river,” it is the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. Many mill structures still proudly stand to remind us of the strong legacy that built the communities we support today. Those mills have long since ceased to produce their original products, but many have been or are in the process of being repurposed to meet the demands of today’s workforce, echo-ing the Valley motto of “restore rather than destroy.”
Since 1979 the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce has been known as the number-one “go to” resource for business and community. We continue to evolve to meet the needs of our mem-bers while providing leadership on issues that impact the economy and quality of life in the Blackstone Valley.
Chamber programs, initiatives, events and committees exist to encourage the growth of member businesses and to improve the com-munity as a whole. We target Business Growth and Development as a major initiative through regular educational seminars and numerous networking opportunities, including Business Breakfasts, Business After Hours and Women’s Business Networking Luncheons. We spon-sor the annual Home and Business Expo (with over 4,000 in atten-dance), Heritage Starlight-Taste of the Valley, and Golf Tournament to

benefit the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, which offers valuable educational programs, student opportunities and grants to teachers in the 11-town area. These events offer unique business networking and promotional opportunities to accommodate all schedules.
Along with Business Growth the Chamber accommodates the region’s need for a thriving workforce through our Workforce Development initiatives, including the BV Enterprise Academy’s educational seminars and classes in partnership with higher learning institutions. Our newly formed Central Massachusetts Center for Business and Enterprise provides much-needed services to the small-business owner and entre-preneur, including business counseling through SCORE and Clark University’s SBDC program and financial counseling and gap lending programs. Services are offered to any business in need of guidance and assistance in the Central Massachusetts area.
Legislative Affairs is an area of increasing interest. The BVCC hosts several legislative luncheons and informative roundtable groups throughout the year, covering issues that impact both business and community. The BV Chamber attends many state- and local-level meetings and hearings on behalf of the needs of our members and with our mem-bers to lend support on pressing issues. The BVCC sits on the Governor’s Roundtable for Small Business at the State House in Boston so your voice can be heard.
Whether you are a visitor or a resident, tourism plays an important role in the picturesque Blackstone Valley. Through our BVCC Tourism Association we work together to create innovative events and collateral pieces that market and promote the businesses that support tourism in the Valley. We are in partnership with the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission and have been instrumental in gathering support to pass the National Park initiative of the same name. From activities like golf, kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming and waterslides to historic sites and landmarks and even New England’s largest zoo, the Blackstone Valley boasts a bounty for every tourism taste.
The Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce is very active and offers many oppor-tunities to our members. If you have an existing business or are relocating or opening a new business, contact us to learn how you can be a part of our growing membership and take advantage of all the benefits we have to offer. Please visit our website at www.black-stonevalley.org or call us at 508-234-9090. We’d love to help you do better business!
Have a “Valley” great day!

A Living Landscape
The Blackstone Valley’s history is a rich tapestry — literally. As home to the first textile mill in America, a 1790 cotton-
spinning enterprise on the Blackstone River, it is often referred to as the “Birthplace of the Ameri-can Industrial Revolution.” Indeed, it was here that a young nation took its first steps toward be-coming a worldwide economic and cultural force, and where the classic and quintessential profile of the New England town was first seen.
Chuck Arning is an interpretive ranger for the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and is writer, producer and editor of Along the Blackstone, an award-winning public access cable television series produced several times a year. He’s also active in research on the Underground Railroad and baseball in the Blackstone Valley and coordi-nates a number of partner projects many focusing on the Blackstone Canal. He explains that the Blackstone Valley became a model for how America developed industrially.
“The best way to put it is that it is the beginning of America’s journey to industrialization. The struc-ture of the mill village, the mill’s country store and church — you will find that pattern throughout the country at different time frames, but it all started here in the Blackstone Valley in the textile and machine industries.”
Even with mills and industrialization being a rich part of the history of the region, Blackstone Valley has kept its natural beauty.
“The landscape is interesting — with all of the talk about industrialization, you don’t get that feel,” said Arning. “Settlers didn’t want to have Manchester, England, here, with the smokestacks and the fog standing. There is a lot of vegetation — forests, trees and so on — so it’s not exactly what you’d expect when you think about industrialization.”
The presence of the Blackstone in the region was key in preserving the natural beauty, as the ability to harness its power made the mills that came to populate the region more picturesque than polluting.
“The use of water power was a key ingredient and that is why the Blackstone River is so impor-tant,” said Arning. “A lot of the mills go back to the 1820s and 1830s, so the landscape is still in really good shape. It is a living landscape, and there is a heritage area here.”
While it still has its peaceful rural feel, this lovely little Valley is nestled between two large cities, maintaining its economic strength and relevance today.
“There are 24 cities and towns that make up the Blackstone Valley, including Providence, Rhode Island, and Worcester, the second-largest city in New England,” said Arning. “With the Valley in the middle, you have this very interesting contrast of farms, river and industrialization.”
While peaceful now, the Blackstone Valley has contributed men and manpower when called upon to support its country.
“The War of 1812 — and we are coming up to its 200-year anniversary — was really significant to the Valley, because that was when it really got its start,” Arning noted. “There are still a number of mills around that date back to that time — 1808–1815 — that were the basis for America’s jumping off into the industrial world.
“We also made a lot of stuff in the Civil War and both world wars, and a lot of those mills are still here and they have been pretty flexible with what they’ve made,” Arning added.
On a lighter side, baseball fans will also be interested in the history of Blackstone Valley, also a leader in the development of America’s pastime, which was hugely popular in the region.
“It’s a great baseball story,” Arning said. “If you think about working in the mill, it’s fast-paced, it’s loud, it’s dirty, it’s smelly, it’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter, oily — it is a very, very intense work environment. The opposite of all that is baseball. We complain today because baseball is so slow, but back in the day they loved that aspect of it. Both the mill workers and the mill owners loved baseball, and it was the way to get the very diverse workforce working together.”
Arning says having such a close-knit commu-nity, where so many worked together, meant that everybody felt a stake in baseball, so that game days were a very big deal in the region.
“There are stories about when one village was playing another village, nobody would deliver because there would be nobody home. They would all be at the ball game,” Arning said.
The competitive atmosphere no doubt motivated players to hone their skills, and the Blackstone Valley has turned out its share of play-ers who ended up making a living at the game.
“There’s some hall of famers that came from this area,” Arning said. “Gabby Hartman was a catcher for the Cubs who came from this area. When the Cubs offered him a contract in the 1920s he bolted — never worked a day again in the mill.”
There’s so much to explore in the Blackstone Valley that the pages of a book or magazine can’t capture it all. It simply must be explored in per-son. Among a wealth of treasures, history buffs will find local museums, artwork, Worcester Historical Museum in Worcester, and the Blackstone Valley Heritage State Park’s visitor center at Riverbend Farm in Uxbridge.
History of the Blackstone Valley
blackstonevalley.org 7
an industrial timelineThe earliest residents of the Blackstone Valley were the Paleo-Indians, who arrived in the region about 12,000 years ago. By the early 17th century, three principal tribes lived in the Valley: the Narragansett, the Nipmuc and the Wampanoag. They followed a semi-nomadic life, planting corn, beans and squash until forced by soil depletion to move on and hunting and fishing in the waters of the Blackstone River Watershed.
1635The first European settler in the Blackstone Valley, the Rev. William Blackstone, builds his home, Study Hall, in what is now Cumberland, Rhode Island.
1650sWhile most early settlers remain farmers, some begin to tap into the water power opportunities of the region with grist mills, saw mills and iron forges.
1675–1676The Native tribes’ dominance in the Blackstone River Valley is shattered after their defeat by English settlers during the King Philip’s War.
1790Providence merchant Moses Brown, with the assistance of English immigrant Samuel Slater, opens the first successful water-powered cotton-spinning factory in the United States on the Blackstone River.
1800–1820The success of the Slater Mill inspires other entrepreneurs to build their own mills, first throughout the Blackstone Valley and then eventually all over New England. To take advantage of water power sources, new mill villages are built.
1824New workers, including many Irish immigrants, come to the area to help construct the Blackstone Canal. The canal is completed in 1828. Cheaper and faster than roadway travel, each canal barge could haul 30–35 tons of cargo pulled by only two horses.
1835–1847The railway comes to the Blackstone Valley with the completion of the Boston to Worcester rail line in 1835, followed by the P&W in 1847, providing even faster, cheaper and more reliable transport between the villages of the Blackstone Valley and the ports of Providence and Boston. Rail service also makes practical the conversion of the textile mills of the Valley from water power to steam power by the 1860s and 1870s.
1860–1880The textile mills of the Valley are converted from water power to steam power. To support increased workforce needs, mill owners begin to recruit French Canadians from Quebec to become mill workers in the Blackstone Valley. More workers follow from nations across Europe, including Poland, Sweden and Portugal.Source: National Park Service: http://www.nps.gov/blac/index.htm

Blackstone Valley Regional Economic Development Council
Sound economic development, with its associated tax revenue genera-tion, is essential to the future of any area, and the Blackstone Valley is no exception.
The Valley possesses the essential resources of location, land, resources and workforce to attract high-value economic development; but today we do not possess the regional infrastructure and mechanics to effectively launch and maintain effective economic development programs or to deal with the collage of the complex issues associated.
As the urban sprawl of Boston extends ever westward, it is inevitable that development will take place in the Blackstone Valley. The significant improvement of 146, with its connections to the Mass Turnpike and 290, is a major facilitator of this development.
The essential questions are:
What type of development will this be?•Are we positioned to attract the most favorable opportunities? •Will they enhance or detract from the character of the Valley?•
Will they provide the maximum valuation per acre and highest-paying •jobs for our next generation? How can the Valley community best influence its own destiny?•
The Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce knows that genuine ben-efit is derived from a regional approach to these issues and has adopted as part of its own strategic mission to advance the collaboration of the strategic vision, planning and marketing resources of the regional community at large to positively impact the chance of their realization for everyone.
The Chamber further believes that in the area of economic development, especially when it comes to infrastructure, incentives, creative financing, national sales and marketing, participation by the Commonwealth is absolutely necessary. No single town has the ability to interact with the Commonwealth as effectively as a regional public/private consortium.
For these reasons, and others, the Chamber of Commerce, whose mis-sion is to promote sound, wise and long-lasting economic development for the overall benefit of the community, remains committed to supporting regional economic initiatives and specifically the success of its partner orga-nization, the Blackstone Valley Regional Development Council.
The heart of the Blackstone Valley region’s economy is its thriving small businesses. With more than 2,500 small businesses
in the Valley, it’s clear the region offers some-thing special for entrepreneurs.
“Right now small business is driving the entire economy of the country. In the Valley is no different,” said John E. Rainey, CMA, senior management counselor at the Small Business Development Center. Most jobs created today are from small businesses, so most of your jobs are coming from that environment. Small business is what is going to bring back the economy as we move forward.”
One of the great things for small businesses in the Blackstone Valley is that the environment is very friendly and inviting.
“The Blackstone Valley is a very busi-ness-friendly atmosphere,” Rainey said. “The Blackstone Valley has great land, the infrastruc-ture is getting stronger and stronger, and we have MA 146 rebuilt, so there is a major access road going through. We have very favorable tax rates in most of the towns in the Valley.
“I think Blackstone Valley is a great business environment,” he continued. “There is land you can build on, there’s capacity there, ready. If you want to lease, we have a number of the old mills. They’ve done a great job on them.”
Personal as well as professional benefits come to those choosing to work in the Blackstone Valley.
“It’s definitely a good place to raise families,” Rainey concluded. “It’s a beautiful area, and it has good schools and a good employment base, so it’s a great area to bring a company to or to start a business.”

Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce16
The Blackstone Valley Education Founda-tion works to foster partnerships between area schools and industry, helping ensure
that students graduate with the skills needed in the modern workplace.
Paul Lynskey, recently named Executive Director of the Education Foundation, comes with an extensive background in education. He eagerly looks forward to taking over the helm once held by retiring Executive Director, Susan Gately. Gately explains that the group’s roots are in the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce.
“It was originally an education committee of the Chamber,” she said. “In 1999, the group was approached to manage a grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to conduct what they call ‘connecting activities,’ which is connect-ing schools with business and industry. In 1999, they established their own board of directors, and they have been operating as a foundation ever since then.”
While an independent entity, the foundation still works with the Chamber to develop and pro-mote its programs.
“We are very closely allied with the Chamber of Commerce, which makes our organization really unique in any community,” said Gately. “It’s a unique opportunity for the Blackstone Valley school districts and community residents to con-nect work and learning.”
One of the foundation’s successful initiatives is the Blackstone Valley Youth Program, which invites ninth and 10th graders to become part of a year-long academy to learn about leadership skills through developing a community service project. Another academy is for juniors and seniors who wish to learn about manufacturing. They are taught a variety of skills, and then they visit many of the manufacturers in the Blackstone Valley, giving them a firsthand look at the world of manufacturing.
Other training provided by the foundation focuses on “soft skills” that are vital for success in the workplace, but don’t usually fall under standard vocational or academic training, like interview skills, workplace ethics and professional work habits.
“We arrange for things like mock interviews or employability workshops — the kinds of things that schools and teachers are not ordinarily pre-pared to do,” Gately said.
The foundation also partners with Tufts-Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to sponsor an annual S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) conference designed to increase student interest and teacher preparation in S.T.E.M. subjects. Other initiatives focus on arts and humanities, ensuring that students of all talents and interests are engaged.
Through a variety of programs, the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation works to keep educa-tors connected with the needs of area businesses.

The only veterinary school in New England, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University was founded in 1978. Since then, some 1,500 graduates have gone on to become suc-
cessful in careers ranging from clinical practice and biomedical research to international medicine, conservation medicine and public health.
Cummings is comprised of three teaching hospitals: the Hospital for Large Animals, the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, and the Tufts Wildlife Clinic. The school also owns and operates Tufts Ambulatory Service in Woodstock, Conn., and Tufts VETS, an innovative satellite clinic in Walpole, Mass.
Each year about 80 students begin their studies in the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree program. Graduate programs include: a combined D.V.M./M.S. in Comparative Biomedical Sciences, a combined D.V.M./M.S. in Laboratory Animal Medicine, a combined D.V.M./M.P.H. with Tufts University School of Medicine, a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, an M.S. in Animals and Public Policy, and an M.S. in Conservation Medicine.
Signature opportunities that push the traditional boundaries of veteri-nary medicine include programs in international veterinary medicine and wildlife medicine.

Homes
The Blackstone Valley region is uniquely positioned close to large cities, but with the housing costs of a small town. Its
proximity to urban amenities and relatively low costs are among the top reasons new residents choose the Valley, says Fran Koliss of Paramount Realty Group.
“We are only 45 minutes from Boston, and we have a lot of people move out here because the housing costs are so much less,” she said. “People can get the type of home they were brought up in for a lot less money.
“The Blackstone Valley is called the Gateway between Worcester and Providence,” she added.
The region’s historic heritage and natural gifts also sweeten the deal.
“There is a lot of history here — it was the site of the Industrial Revolution,” said Koliss. “We have a lot of National and State parks, a world-class golf course, and beautiful bodies of water — not only the river, but lakes that people can find recreation on.”
Those charmed by the region’s history will find older homes that appeal, but young profes-sionals and families will also find modern con-struction with all the amenities they expect.
“We do have a lot of antique homes — that takes a specialized buyer,” Koliss noted. “There has also been a lot of development and new con-struction, and neighborhoods have been put in with your typical four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath colonial. We have a lot of first-time home buyer properties available. We run the gamut from $100,000 up to $2 million.”
In addition to State and National parks, the region has a greenway available for recreation which when completed will cover 48 miles from Worcester to Providence. Plus, the close commu-nity ties mean that many people who grow up in the region, return to live in the region.
“The young people who grow up in these towns in the Blackstone Valley — most of them want, when they get married, to live in that town,” Koliss said. “Their attachments are there, because of what they were brought up with.”

Recreation & Tourism
Follow the Blackstone: River Recreation
One of the best ways to enjoy the Blackstone Valley is to follow the Blackstone River itself as it winds
through many of the region’s communities, his-toric sites, farmlands and natural areas. Whether on the banks or on the water, visitors will find activities along the river’s path that appeal to the eyes, intellect and spirit.
Perhaps the most intimate way to experience the Blackstone River is to explore its waters by canoe or kayak. Encompassing smooth segments as well as rapids, the river’s course, running from Worcester, Mass., to Providence, R.I., drops an average of nearly 10 feet per mile and draws many paddling enthusiasts. A number of dams necessitate portage in certain locations, but there are numerous access points between Northbridge, Mass., and Blackstone Gorge which allow boaters to plan trips that match their schedules and capa-bilities. The National Park Service offers river access information and suggested tour plans for paddlers of various skill levels, including a begin-ner tour between Blackstone Gorge and Millville,
as well as five intermediate level tours on the river’s Massachusetts side.
For a less strenuous ride on the river, the Blackstone Valley Explorer offers one-hour boat tours to the general public on Sundays from early May through early October, with guided wilder-ness tours on the 40-passenger boat beginning and ending at 45 Madeira Avenue in Central Falls, Rhode Island.
“You see very few signs of human habitation on the tour,” said Dianne Mailloux, coordina-tor of Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful. “It goes through the Lonsdale Marsh, which is the largest fresh-water estuary in Rhode Island, and it’s abso-lutely gorgeous. And the other fun part of the tour is learning the history of the river... We have a lot of stories about the river that help people connect to the region.”
Those who prefer bicycles to boats will enjoy the Blackstone River Bikeway, which continues to grow as it follows the river through scenic landscapes. Still under construction, the paved bicycle path will ultimately offer 48 miles of greenway riding beginning at Worcester in the
north and extending along the entire length of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor.
Riverfront parks situated along the banks of the Blackstone provide a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities, such as hiking and fish-ing, as well as a historic look at the infrastructure that helped the region advance. The Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park in Uxbridge, Mass., for example, is home to the River Bend Farm Visitors Center, an expansive natural area and remnant sections of the canal system and towpaths used in the early 1800s. Just minutes away, Purgatory Chasm State Park provides a quarter-mile stretch of chasm where towering granite walls create unique features for adven-turous hikers and rock-climbers. And following the flow of the river to the southeast toward the Massachusetts-Rhode Island border, visitors can stop to view the historic canal’s well-preserved Millville Lock as they travel toward Blackstone Gorge, where hiking trails offer scenic river vistas which look as natural and untamed now as they have for centuries.
