Subject: Quality Control Assessment of Data Collected in 2007

Dear Mr. Feild:

BVSPC performed a quality control assessment of the soil data obtained from the Omaha Lead site in 2007 and we are transmitting the results to you in this letter. The soil data addressed by our assessment includes the results of the confirmation soil samples and the soil samples that were screened with both a 60 mesh sieve and a 10 mesh sieve.

Confirmation soil samples are analyzed for lead in BVSPC's field office using an XRF instrument. The same soil sample analyzed using the XRF is subsequently sent to the EPA laboratory and is analyzed for lead and other metals. Confirmation samples are collected at a rate of 5 percent (one confirmation sample per 20 XRF samples). The lead concentrations from confirmation samples analyzed by the XRF and the EPA laboratory data are compared to determine if the data satisfy the quality control goals specified in our February 1, 2007 Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP).

The XRF data and the EPA laboratory data fi-om the confirmation samples are used to calculate the Relative Percent Difference (RPD) between the two sets of data. The RPD was compared to the goal of 80 percent RPD for confirmation samples specified in our February 1, 2007 QAPP. During the 2007 sampling season, we analyzed 160 confirmafion samples. The RPD between the confirmation samples exceeded 80 percent goal in 3.8 percent of the samples (Table 1). For comparison, we also determined the RPD between the confirmation samples collected from 2001 through 2007. The RPD between the samples analyzed with the XRF and the laboratory in this set of samples exceeded the 80 percent goal in 5.7 percent of the samples.

We also determined the coefficient of determination (r^) of the data from the confirmation samples collected during the 2007 sampling season. For the field XRF analyses to have value, the correlation between the offsite analyses and the field analyses must be acceptable. For quality control/quality assurance purposes, r'̂ should be at least

0.49. This is the coefficient of determination value that was identified in the Sverdrup QAPP as being acceptable.

As shown in the enclosed Figures 1 and 2, we determined the coefficient of determination for the XRF and laboratory data collected during the 2007 sampling season and for all of the XRF and laboratory data from 2001 through 2007. The coefficient of determinafion for the data collected in 2007 is 0.7673, indicating a very strong correlation. The coefficient of determination for all of the data collected from 2001 through 2007 is 0.5242, which is above the goal specified in the Sverdrup QAPP.

In addition to comparing the XRF data with the laboratory data from the confirmation samples, we also compared the XRF data generated by sieving the soil samples with a 10 mesh sieve and a 60 mesh sieve. On days when soil samples are analyzed in the field office, one sample per day is sieved using both a 10 mesh and a 60 mesh sieve and the soil in both samples is analyzed with an XRF instrument. The data was compared for the 2007 (Table 2) sampling season. As indicated by the enclosed Figure 3, the coefficient of determination for 2007 is 0.9545, indicating that there is a very strong correlation between the results fi-om the two sieve sizes. There were no goals established in the QAPP for the coefficient of determinafion for this data. However, a coefficient of determinafion of 0.49 or higher is generally considered acceptable.

We also determined the RPD of the samples analyzed using a 60 mesh sieve and a 10 mesh sieve for 2007 and compared the results to a RPD of 80 percent. In 2007 there were no sampling results above 80 percent (Table 2).

Based on our analysis, we believe the quality of the data in 2007 was acceptable. If you have any questions, please contact me at (913) 458-6605.
