Doug Egly, General Manager

Dear Black Diamond Members: Happy Holiday’s to everyone! It is the time of year that we start seeing more and more people arrive at Black Diamond. This year, it is particularly exciting as we have many projects underway. The bunker project for the Highlands Course will be completed in December. It is an interesting process that I invite you to go out and see so that you have a better understanding of what is involved. Until the project is completed, please stay at least 10 feet from the edges. For those members who are not yet here, please see the pictures of the work in progress. We are using bright white sand that will not only visually compliment the course, but is very playable as well. We are also near the completion of our first model home located at 3103 W. Shadow Creek Loop. It is the first new home built in Black Diamond by the developer in many years and is receiving quite a bit of interest. We will also soon begin construction on another home to kick start the real estate within the gates. Speaking of construction, the clubhouse looks stunning. We recently resumed dining service in the main dining room. Member comments have been extremely positive and we are eager to show it off to you. The inside dining is much quieter and features all new décor and furnishings. The outside patio was also completely redone and is much more inviting with comfortable seating and terrific views of the course. Now that we have all new dining facilities we have retained Brad T. Reid as our new Club Manager to oversee all dining operations. Brad will focus on training to ensure your experience is commensurate with the new facilities. Merideth will work closely with Brad and continue with banquet events and special member events. Lastly, we continue to add new members to the club, so please welcome the new faces to Black Diamond when you see them. We are very excited about the future of Black Diamond and our new facilities.

Thank you so much for your patronage and commitment to Black Diamond.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.

Bunker Renovation is underway on the Highlands Course and we are very excited about the progress we have seen thus far. All bunkers will be getting new drainage, new sand called “G-Angle,” as well as a new “liner” called the Better Billy Bunker. We started on Highlands #3 and will work backwards. While MacCurrach Golf is working on the bunkers, we will be working on the DRA’s. OurplansfortheDRA’sincludere-edging,vegetationremovaland/oradditionand erosion repair. We also plan on repairing #17 Quarry Bowls in the next several weeks. Many of you have commented on the tree trimming and removal process. In a nutshell, we are trimming palmettos because they are a protected species governed by the State of Florida and we cannot excavate them or remove them. First step is to trim the palmettos, and then if they do not live, we have a few morestepstotakebeforewecanmechanicallyexcavatethem.Othertreesthatare being removed are trees that have a negative impact or are trees that are in a health of decline and need to be removed for safety reasons. The Thirteenth Annual Baltusrol Golf and Dinner event was a great success. The Village competed in a mixed scramble and the results are as follows:

FIRST PLACE: Mat Gauthier, George Buck, Charlie Rodes & Pam Kelly

SECOND PLACE TIE: Les Bell, Dianne Buck, Tyler Wilson & Sandy Rempfer

SECOND PLACE TIE: Jean-Guy Gauthier, Donna Cummings,

Nancy Manafort & Dick Goss

At the Awards Banquet hosted by Dave and Nicole Ragaini, a fun quiz was conducted. The team of Jan Conway, Dianne Buck, Les Bell and Sandy Rempfer won first place. The first place winner’s names have been engraved on the special Baltusrol Village Championship plaque alongside the previous year’s winner’s names. The Champions share possession of the plaque throughout the year. A good time was had by all.

Ready, Aim, SwingBy Patrick Leahy, PGA Director of Instruction

Happenings

If you’ve been watching golf on television you’re seeing some of the best players in the world make the game of golf look relatively easy. They appear to be calm, in control and very systematic with their approach to each shot. Well I can tell you from experience thatisdefinitelyalearnedtrait! For most of these players it is not about their swing mechanics but rather controlling their nerves and emotions as they go through their round. How can they be so calm? Perhaps their success lies within the routine they go through before each shot. Do you notice how they handle some of the distractions from the gallery of spectators? Even though some of these distractions came right before they were to swing the club, they simply stepped back, gathered themselves and refocused their thoughts to attempt the shot again. Even when good players are uncomfortable about a critical putt they step away and take the necessary time to become convinced and committed to what is about to happen. You see the preshot routine of a good player is a critical part of their success. It is the time and place where they organize their thoughts prior to executing the shot itself. Simply stated it is the process that a player goes through prior to each shot that gets them physically ready and mentally focused to play their next shot. Almost to a fault, every successful player uses a consistent preshot routine and if you pay attention to their routine you will see that it consists of three parts: a ready stage, an aiming stage and an actual swinging stage.

During the ready stage, your purpose is to become physically and mentally prepared to play your next shot. While getting ready, you should be considering the outside factors that could affect your upcoming shot such as the wind direction, lie of the ball, club selection and the type of shot you want to play. You should also be considering the internal factors such as your level of anxiety or confidence.Thiscouldbeaperfecttime to take a couple of extra practice swings, joke with your playing partner or simply stretch a bit. This time will be well spent since you shouldn’t move onto the actual aiming stage until you are relaxed and committed to the shot at hand. The aiming stage of your pre-shot routine consists of aligning your clubhead, feet, and body to the target, as well, as establishing a sense of balance and readiness relative to the target. After you are set up, you should shift all your attention away from your body and strive to mentally attach to your target and, as the late great teacher Harvey Penick said, take dead aim! During this brief time before you swing you should rehearse and visualize the shot you want to play. As you do so, your mind will begin to stimulate the muscles that will be used to hit the intended shot. As for the swing stage of your preshot routine, it can be simply stated as a natural, uncluttered and reactive motion to your intended target. While you are on the course your swing should not be governed by a myriad of swing thoughts but instead reactive to a target

andapredeterminedballflight. You have to play with the swing and game you brought to the course on the given day. If your ball has a slight fade or draw when itisinflightthenyoushouldadjustyour aim to accommodate for that day’s tendencies. The “Ready – Aim – Swing” pre-shot routine is designed to give you the best possible chance to execute your most repeatable swing on each and every shot. By getting comfortable and committed over every shot, focusing your attention on your intended target, and simply swinging the club free of mechanical swing thoughts, youcanenjoythebenefitsofaconsistent pre-shot routine just like the pros. Think of ready, aim, swing the next time you play and you might be surprised how a simple thing such as a preshot routine will help you play better! Ihopeyoufindthisinformationhelpful and if you need additional help with your golf game give me a call.

Until then, great golfing everyone!

high Point ladies’ Golf

Welcome ladies, to our 2012-2013 BDLGA season. This year will be highlighted by great golf and camaraderie. We have a terrific Executive Committee and Board in place. This past summer, they worked long and hard on plans for this year. As the year gets underway, Committee Chairpersons are putting goals in place for their committee. Along with their goals, each Chairperson is developing Action Statements that detail how they are going to accomplish their goals. As President, I have also developed goals, action statements and a set of belief statements that will help me to better lead our organization. I am honored to be your President and look forward to working with you. I hope you will feel free to contact members of the Executive Committee or Board with your questions or concerns about BDLGA. My phone number is 746-6133 and my email (for this year) is [email protected].

Black Diamond Foundation Awards Millionth Dollar Grant

When we were kids growing up or even after we started our working careers, most of us had a dream of earning a million dollars, having a million dollars or even someday being worth a million dollars. At that point in our lives it was the magic number that signified success. About the time you are reading this issue of the Happenings, your Black Diamond Foundation Board will be awarding its millionth dollar in grants to the least fortunate of Citrus County. It has been just under 10 years since some members of this club had the foresight and wisdom to start this organization to show the residents of Citrus County that Black Diamond cares. To celebrate this momentous accomplishment, we are starting to plan an event for all Black Diamond members and residents.

Circle the Date!!

Friday, February 8th, will be the night to share in our community’s success.

The date for one of our main fundraisers, the Black Diamond Pro Am is rapidly approaching. The 10th Annual Pro Am will be held on Wednesday, January 23rd.

The brochures are out so get your team together and get signed up. It sold out again last year and only the first 32 paid teams will get in.

Thanks again to our members and the residents of Black Diamond for helping make your foundation a success.
