Hart to Heart Welcome back to school, Eastwood Black Bears! It is amaz-
ing how quickly this building came to life as over 600 of West Virginia’s
brightest children walked through the doors on the first day of school. We
hope your summer was fun, relaxing, and productive, but honestly, we
could hardly wait for them to get back here. Thanks to the efforts of all, we
are off to a great start for this 2015-16 school year!
As we begin this fresh new year, our focus will be rooted on four main ob-
jectives that have already become The Eastwood Way...growing as readers
& writers, blooming as mathematicians, nurturing our environment, and
cultivating a caring school community. We have many exciting activities
and events planned to assist us in reaching our mission of “Growing
Healthy Kids in a Healthy World.”
We invite you, our students’ families, to be involved in as many opportuni-
ties as you can! We realize it takes a team to help each child grow to his or
her fullest potential, and you are a big part of that team. We’re so glad you
are a member of the Eastwood family. It’s going to be a GREAT year!
Always Proud to be a Black Bear!

Who’s Who 2015-2016 Faculty and Staff
The students of Eastwood Elementary were encouraged to keep reading over the sum-
mer. Each student was given an empty “beehive”, with 50 hexagons. Incoming kinder-
garten students were challenged to read 50 books to fill their beehive. Students entering
third through fifth grades were challenged to read 500 pages from chapter books. The
reading challenge was a great success! Our kindergarten through 2nd
grade students
read 3,990 books, and our third through fifth graders read 117,801 pages! All of the stu-
dents who filled their reading log were eligible to participate in a drawing for a new bike.
University Motors of Morgantown provided three bikes to support this event. Sarah Clay-
don from University Motors came to Eastwood Elementary to draw the names of the win-
ners. Ryan Nipper, Addison Savage, and Addison Kitzmiller were the lucky winners of
the new bikes.
The top readers from each
classroom received a $10
Wal-Mart card courtesy of Insurance Centers, Inc. The top
readers were Breanna Li, Jonah Akers, Kellen Kinder, Brady
Myers, Hayden Poff, Linden Morris, Brody Beresford, Hank
Crites, Caleb Henderson, Alex King, Evelyn Holderness,
Raelyn Clark, Jenna Hilling, Ella Tillotson, Juliette Lisle, Za-
die Behnke, Maddie Nguyen, Addyson Davich, Eli Baxter,
Maddie Antonini, Miguel Hicks, Wesley Deleurere, Lainey
Holderness, Preston Hetrick, Max Davis, Blake Harding, Isa-
bella Stevens, Ashelynn Mayfield, Rebecca Chmiel, and
Branden Hause.
We are so proud of all of our students who participated in the
summer reading challenge.
The next PTO meeting will be
October 8th at 6:00 p.m.
The fall Book Fair is October 12th through the
16th. Contact Heather Wolfe to volunteer.
The Sarris Candy orders delivery & pick up will
start October 29th. Thanks for your participa-
tion in this fund raiser.
We are going to be selling Sweet Frog coupon
books for $10.00. Watch for information soon.
Our fourth and fifth grade students will be per-
forming in our “Honoring America” concert on November
6, 2015. Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks for more in-
formation about the concert, but for now we would love
for you to dig out any family pictures you may have of
veterans who served our country. Mrs. Morgan will be
collecting pictures from now until Friday, October 23,
2015. To protect your memories and images we ask that
you please send copies of pictures, not originals. They
will be attached to the wall in
the gymnasium and we would
hate to damage anyone’s per-
sonal photos. Even though
they will be copies, it would be
very helpful if all pictures were
labeled with your child’s name,
classroom teacher, and the
name of the individuals in the
photo along with any infor-
mation about ranking or history
you would like to share. We
will do our best to compile all
photos and information into
our Memorial Wall.

Nurses Niche
Kate Fragale, RN
Clinic Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00am – 10:30am. After these hours, there will be a nurse available for emer-gencies, medications and medical procedures only.
Phone: 304-284-8226
Just a few reminders to start the school year:
Medications: All medications that are to be given at school, both over the counter and prescription, must have a medication form filled out by the doctor and the parent. This includes cough drops, creams like hydrocortisone and Tylenol/Advil as examples. All medication must be provided by the parent in the original container with the child’s name. All medications must be brought in by a parent or guardian, they may not be sent to or from school with the stu-dent.
Emergency #’s: Please advise the school of any changes in your phone number and emergency numbers. There is nothing worse than a sick child whose parent can’t be reached. Make sure to inform the office, nurse and teacher so that there is no delay in reaching you in an emergency.
If your child is ill: Please do not send your child to school if they are running a fever, vomiting or have diar-rhea. Per policy, they must be fever free for at least 24 hours without the aid of a fever reducer before they return to school. They also must be free of vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning.
We have a high number of food allergies at Eastwood this year, some of them life threatening. PLEASE be aware of any food allergies in your child’s classroom and of the list of acceptable foods provided by your child’s teacher and adhere to it so we can keep all our students safe.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Let’s have a healthy year.

Eastwood Elementary’s staff attended “Black Bears in the
Wild” on their first day back to school. We spent most of the
day outside for our opening meetings and welcomed Vicki
Fenwick from Mt State Institute as our featured speaker for
“No Teacher Left Inside”. The day inspired us to expand our
vision of “Being Green” and equipped us with great ideas for
Environmental Education. Eastwood’s Green Team meets
bi-weekly to help guide the school’s efforts.
We recently held nominations and elections for our three LSIC parent representatives. The representa-tives that you chose are: Karen Davis, Carrie Smith Bell, and Aaron Nichols. Our first LSIC (Local School Improvement Council) meeting of the 2015-2016 will be held on September 30, at 3:30PM. All are welcome to attend.
Eastwood Black Bears
would like to extend a
warm welcome to our

members. We are so
glad you are part of the
