Introduction
Creating better environments
3
Forbo aims to provide sustainable integrated
flooring solutions for every building, from
bedroom to boardroom, from the local doctors
practice to operating theatres.
Our company ethos o creating better environments
pervades all our actions. From the way we design
our products and source raw materials to the way we
manuacture and despatch. O course it doesnt stop
there. Our environmental responsibility extends to ourproducts during their use and what happens at the end
o their useul lie.
In the ollowing pages well try and stick to the acts
o the matter. Well take a look at the independent
methods we use to measure our environmental impacts
and how we build greennessinto our processes and
products. Well also try and give an insight in to the
many environmental schemes out there to enable our
customers to make a choice o looring using sound
environmental inormation.

Ensure that all sta are ully aware o our
Sustainability Policy and are committed to
implementing and improving it
Forbo Flooring Systems
fully commits to being a
sustainable partner to all
our stakeholders.
As a global leader in flooring systems we have a
responsibility to all our stakeholders, to create a
better environment. The way we serve and drive
the market sets the pace and standard for world
class flooring solutions. Sustainable development
and creating better environmentsare integral
parts of all of Forbo Flooring Systemsactivities.
Founded in 1928, Forbos irst product was linoleum
made rom renewable natural raw materials, ully
biodegradable and environmentally riendly. We
have been at the oreront o sustainable awareness
ulilment or over 80 years. This global sustainability
awareness has grown in the last decade, becoming
clear that natural source depletion and global warming
are two practices that cannot continue as they
have in the past i we are to ulil our obligations to
uture generations. It is these obligations, to uture
generations, that we will comply to and in doing so act
as a sustainable enterprise.
Forbo underwrites the broad and all inclusive deinition
or sustainable development as it has been accepted by
the United Nations Commission on Environment and
Development, General Assembly Resolution, 1987.
Developments that meet present needs
without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their needs.
The United Nations definition of sustainability recognises three individual
dimensions that together make up a sustainable policy, they are:
The Economic dimension:
the way in which the company
organises its position in the
market place to actively develop
its sustainable proile by using its
economic stability and proitability
or continuous improvement.
Forbo Flooring Systems supports these dimensions
in a constructive and consistent manner through
the following principles:
Compliance Plus a commitment to go above and
beyond Government regulations and requirements
Integrating Sustainability considerations into all our
business decisions
Regular monitoring o progress and review o
sustainability perormance
Commitment to continuous improvement
Promoting Sustainability throughout our
value chain, and expecting our suppliers and
customers to comply with this
Our target
To continuously minimise the environmental
impact of Forbo Flooring Systems as
measured by the weighted categories in our
independently verified Life Cycle Assessment
measurement system by 25% before the end
of 2015 (cf 2009).
We shall succeed by:By applying Forbos 4 Rs
ReduceRenewable

in this order
Measurement
Forbo uses Lie Cycle Assessment (LCA) as the
independent methodology o measuring our impact
on the environment.
Based on LCA assessment* we already out perorm the
industry average in resilient looring categories. Forbos
range o textile products is currently being assessed.
Measuring our LCA
The LCA is calculated or 1m2 installed loor covering
rom cradle to installation. We based our LCA
calculation on the weighed mass o all the products we
produced. We also included the energy consumptiono all our oices and warehouses worldwide.
When evaluating our LCA, we took into account the
ollowing environmental impact categories:
Acidiication potential
Eutrophication potential
Ozone layer depletion potential
Photo oxidant creation potential
Abiotic depletion potential
Global warming potential
We strongly believe that creating better environments
means reducing all environmental impacts and not only
Global Warming. Thereore, we equally weight all six
impact categories and express them in one index igure.
The LCA index Environmental Footprint shows
that we have continued to improve our perormance
or the ourth straight year. The carbon ootprint
Global Warming Potential has been reduced by
over 30% since 2007. This is partly due to our policy
o purchasing renewable orms o electricity and our
internal waste reuse and recycling programmes.
The following pages provide more detail on the
activities and programmes we are undertaking to
continue to reduce our LCA index Environmental
footprint and thereby achieve our challenging
target.

Product design and raw material sourcing
When we begin with our blank piece
of paper, we start to design with the
end in mind.
Andy Hall
Vice President of innovation and product management
Forbos product development is ocused on reducingthe use o virgin raw material and developing
processes and products that result in the lowest
proven environmental impact as measured through
LCA (Lie Cycle Assessment). We work closely with our
suppliers to source new, low i mpact materials that
help us achieve a Compliance Plusrating. We also
design engineerour products to ensure that they
use the minimum amount o raw material without
compromising on perormance.
Examples:
The backing o our Westbond and Flotex tiles
comprises up to 74% reused and recycled
PVC material
A multi-million investment in new tuting
technology allows us to produce carpet tiles with
heavy contact perormance using less material
Our project vinyl ranges such as Eternal, Step
and Flex Design contain up to 45% reused post
industrial waste
Marmoleums construction is based on abundant,
renewable raw materials such as linseed oil, tall
oil, rosin and wood lour. Approximately 70% o
Marmoleums raw materials are harvestable within
10 years o planting
40% o Marmoleums content is recycled post
industrial waste
The Westbond Natural range o carpet tiles is
made rom undyed British wool, a natural and
renewable resource
We use 100% recycled aluminium in our Nuway
entrance systems and many o the ranges are double
sided allowing twice the wear beore they need to
be replaced
By working closely with a new supplier to maximise
the use o recycled material we are able to produce
our Tessera Inline carpet tile range with a recycled
yarn content o up to 55%
Our focus on environmental manufacturing
has resulted in a variety of new and unique
processes. These processes also form the basis for
measurement and monitoring to help us reduce
our environmental impact.

Marmoleum almost a closed-loopproduct
Through modern cutting technology weve
dramatically reduced our carpet tile cutting wasteby 80% and the little waste material that is now
generated is processed into material used or
repairing road suraces or is sent to a waste to
energyacility
The production o Tessera Mix has been made
possible through the use o advanced CMC tuting
technology. As a random lay and batchless carpet tile,
Tessera Mix installation waste is reduced to 2%
Energy
We are pleased to report the upward trend in 2008
and 2009 reversed in 2010. Our energy consumption
per m2 o product produced ell by 2.1% in 2010
compared to 2009, in line with our targeted reduction
o 2%
Although we are not back to the levels o 2007 we are
conident that urther improvement will be gained
in 2011. This will mainly be achieved through the
large number o improvement projects that were
raised through the Forbo Way to Win employee ideas
programme (see page 8) and also volume growth
through our manuacturing plants

Energy
Our use o renewable electricity continues to grow
and now accounts or over 86% o the total electricity
our 12 manuacturing acilities consume. This has
helped to reduce our carbon ootprint still urther
The total amount o CO2
that we have taken out o
the environment is now over 125,000 tonnes since
2007. We believe that this is the most responsible
course o action, preerring this method to that o
simply trying to oset
The growth in the use o renewable electricity in
2010 has altered our overall primary energy mix. In
2010 this igure approached 46%, which compares
positively with most other looring companies
Materials
Linseed Oil, Rosin, Tall Oil, Cork, Wood lour, Wool, Jute,
Wood, Cardboard and Paper renewable materials
orm a signiicant part o what we purchase in order
to deliver the products our customers demand. In
2010 on average over 36% o our products were
made up o renewable materials. O course the vast
majority o these materials are used in the production
o Marmoleum, which is our most sustainable
product, but as non renewables begin to run out,
their prominence along with other sustainable
materials will become more important in our uture
product developments
Examples:
Replacing wooden pallets by recycled cardboard
pallets in the USA. Less transport weight, less virgin
raw material, easy to recycle again
Using dierent sizes pre-cut lengths o paper or
the automatic packing machine at Forbo in France.
Reducing annual paper consumption by 2%
Rewinding yarn ends and reuse in producing
Tessera carpet tiles. Reduced waste and use o virgin
raw material
Reducing the amount o water to produce steamat Forbo Ripley. Reduced energy needed to
produce Flotex
Using warm exhaust air rom air compressor
installations or space heating at one o our Forbo
sites in Holland. Reduced energy needed to heat
production areas during winter time
Elimination o the cardboard cores in the Jumbo
rolls o Flotex without any compression damage.
Reduced cardboard use o 50 tonnes per year
Replacement o the virgin polythene, used to protect
carpet tile top cloth prior to backing, with reusable
wraps. Reduction in the use o virgin raw materials
Last year we rolled out an internal awareness programme The Forbo Way
to Win. We used this to introduce our sustainability policy and to strengthen
our employees engagement by providing a platform for them to contribute
to our efforts in reducing our environmental impacts. The programme
generated over 1700 ideas resulting in 600 possible projects, some of which
have already been successfully implemented.

1110 Reuse and recycling Reuse and recycling 11
Its important to recognise that recycling is not
always the best option in terms of energy usage
and recovery. If product has to be shipped a long
distance to a recycling plant, the environmental
impact of the journey on the LCA may be negative.
Its therefore important to understand all impacts
of the recycling and re-use programmes.
Firstly we must explain by what we mean by reuse and
recycling. Forbo deine reuse as being waste generated
that ater processing can be ed back as a raw material
into the same sites manuacturing processes. Our
deinition o recycling is material diverted rom the
waste stream during a manuacturing process that
is sent to a third par ty (other Forbo sites or external
recyclers) or them to use as a raw material.
2010 saw an increase in the amount o product
waste that we were able to both reuse and recycle
to almost 80%. I we include the waste used to
produce energy waste to energy then the igure
is approaching 95%
Only 5% o the product waste we generate is
landilled. This is contributing to less raw material
depletion and reducing urther the CO2
emissions
involved in producing virgin materials
Across the division, over 25% o our product is made
rom recycled & re-used materials. I ncreasing the
recycled and reused content will continue to be one
o our major deliverables in the years to come
Post consumer waste recycling
We are actively seeking ways in which we can
contribute urther in the ield o post consumer waste,
or example, we have acilitated the take back o carpet
in the UK which has enabled material to be reused
that would have ordinarily ended up as landill. We
have done this through our involvement with Carpet
Recycling UK (CRUK). See page 25 or more details o
CRUK and visit www.orbo-looring.co.uk/environment
or case studies on our carpet tile reclamation schemes.
Forbo Flooring is taking part in additional recyclinginitiatives all over Europe such as GBR in Sweden and
SFEC in France and is a ounding member o EPFLOOR.
EPFLOOR membership is composed o all the major
Western European Vinyl looring manuacturers
representing over 90% o the production. Since 2001,
the EPFLOOR members have provided increasing unds
or supporting the recycling o post-consumer vinyl
waste. The increase in collection o waste has been a
priority since 2004 resulting in 2200 tonnes o recycled
waste in 2010.
Save a Sample scheme
Sample material is needed to show decision makers
how wonderul our products look! These loose samples
are oten only used once and are then thrown away.
At the end o 2010 we i nitiated a trial o a take back
programme or both re-use and recycling o the
samples. The irst three month trial period proved very
successul with over 90% o samples returned being o
high enough quality to be reused again as sampling
material, thereby preventing
the use o virgin raw
materials. The trial
has now been
extended until at
least the end o 2011.
Installation waste
When it comes to renovation or new build projects,
installation waste o loor coverings normally gets
mixed up with the regular building waste. For
Marmoleum this doesnt present an issue as all
waste is bio-based and can be incinerated without
any harmul eects, generating a high caloriic
value. The amount o energy that can be recovered
rom linoleum waste is 65% more than we use in
production
For vinyl and textile loor coverings the quality oinstallation waste is vital. Forbo participates in a
number o proessional installation waste collection
programmes. With our participation in these schemes,
we hope to gain knowledge and provide motivation
or third parties to develop their expertise
Forbo is one o the participating members o
VinylPlus, an organisation committed to increasing
PVC waste recycling in Europe

Maintenance
Installation o our entrance system products can
stop up to 90% o dirt entering a building thereby
reducing the amount o cleaning needed and saving
on chemical usage
Our loor care instructions have been developed to
ocus on optimising the use o water and energy. We
have engineered many o our resilient ranges such as
Marmoleum, in such a way that we can saely advise
dry/spray maintenance in most cases
The PUR pearl inish on some o our project vinyl
ranges ensures that chemical usage through cleaning
is greatly reduced
Flotex locked looring can be easily cleaned using
standard equipment and without harsh chemicals
Forbos carpet tile ranges are suitable or cleaning
using Dry Fusion which uses little water and only
neutral cleaners
The less time, energy, resources and materials required
to maintain the appearance and performance of a
flooring product in situ, the less environmental impact
the product makes. The proven durability of a product
backed up by robust guarantees also lessens the
impact as products dont need to be replaced as often.
Durability
Durable coatings such as PUR pearl on our vinyl
ranges and Topshield on our linoleum ranges extend
the economic lie o our looring. The Topshield inish
allows a complete renovation o the loor extending
the products lie even urther and improves the LCA
(Lie Cycle Assessment) score by 14%
Most o Tesseras carpet tile ranges are oered with
an optional Sotbac backing. This backing is made
rom recycled plastic drinks bottles and it extends the
guarantee by 50%, which in most cases means to15 years
Nuway tutiguard, heavy duty, lameguard and FR are
all double-sided and are all oered with a structural
guarantee o up to 15 years

Waste
Reducing waste remains one o our main priorities.
It impacts both inancially (material usage, energy,
disposal costs) and environmentally. At the same time,
it is recognised that we also have a responsibility to
dispose o those wastes we do generate with minimum
impact on the environment.
Through reuse and recycling options
Our waste perormance index measured as mass
production waste as a percentage o input remains
very static. Although 2010 showed a slight increase in
comparison to 2009 this is well within the levels we
have seen during the last our years
All Forbos sites within the UK
participate in Shred It s shredding
and recycling programme and
saved 77 trees rom destruction in 2010
Examples:
Recycling of post industrial waste
Recycling o post industrial waste into our products
is one o the best ways to reduce our total
environmental ootprint. Many years ago we started
to recycle waste products rom other industries into
our linoleum products. During the last 10 years this
has been optimised. In our Ripley plant we have a
department where a mixture o internal scrap and
post industrial waste is recycled and reused into
backing or our Flotex tiles
In 2009 we increased our recycling eorts, developing
a backing or our Westbond carpet tile products
The Ripley plant processes the groups PVC waste as
well as that o our competitors, reducing the amount
o waste going to landill rom the looring industry
as a whole
Rubber and aluminium waste rom our Nuway
production at Telord is recycled. The rubber is used
in bowling clubs and equestrian centres
Investment in re-processing in one o our carpet tile
plants has resulted in reducing yarn waste to landill
by 75 tonnes per annum

For years we have been working to produce
products which have the lowest volatile organic
compound emissions (VOCs).
Both Marmoleum and Flotex hold
the Seal o Approval rom the British
Allergy Foundation or the positive
eect that they have on the lives o
allergy suerers.
AgBB/DIBt To establish the undamentals or a
uniorm and reproducible health-related evaluation
o building products, the Committee or Health-
related Evaluation o Building Products (Ausschuss
zur gesundheitlichen Bewertung von Bauprodukten
- AgBB) has developed criteria or testing and an
evaluation scheme or VOC emissions rom building
products suitable or indoor usage. The evaluation
scheme sets quality standards relevant to health or
uture production o building products or use indoors
and osters the development o particularly low-
emission products.
All Forbo Flooring products have been tested to this
standard and ulil all requirements.
LEED this is an environmental scheme operating in
North America and which some UK architects like to
use. Forbo has recently undertaken testing o some o
its product ranges in accordance with the requirements
o Caliornia Speciication Section 01350 which relates
to indoor air quality and low emitting materials.
Products rom our Tessera, Westbond, Coral and Flotex
ranges meet the requirements.

Forbos Marmoleum Flooring has been specified
extensively in hospitals and healthcare
environments throughout the world for its
outstanding performance characteristics, natural
raw materials and exceptional hygiene properties.
Forbo commissioned Independent testing by Proessor
Gemmell o the Bacterial Inection and Epidemiology
Department o the University o Glasgow, to determine
the bacteriostatic attributes o Marmoleum. Theresults o the tests support Marmoleums use as a
recommended looring product to be used in hospitals
in the ight against inection or both MRSA and
Norovirus (winter vomiting virus).
Testing by the Centre de Recherche Industrielle in
Quebec has also conirmed that Marmoleum proves
its bacteriostatic eiciency against Clostridium
diicile when tested according to the TNO seed
layer method, the AATCC 100 method and the vivo
simulations method.
Forbos Flotex also has anti microbial properties. The
anti microbial Sanitized treatment o the Flotex base
ensures continuous protection against bacteria such
as MRSA and E Coli and moulds such as athletes oot.
The Sanitized treatment is compounded into the
Flotex backing, continually rereshing the anti microbial
perormance without degradation through cleaning.
This makes Flotex the ideal loor covering or healthcare
and educational institutions.

Air quality Infection control
Over the previous pages, weve shown
how Forbo is working towards towards its
challenging sustainability target detailed on
page 5. Over the following few pages, we will
demonstrate how these global programmes
are reflected in the environmental profiles of
our products.
I was invited to test Forbos Marmoleum looring
or antibacterial activity as I had heard much
about its bacteria ighting qualities. I have to
admit, along with most o the scientiic world,
to having a degree o scepticism about these
proclaimed qualities. I am now delighted to
say that, ater robust testing, the claims are
shown to be quite true Marmoleum does
indeed inhibit the growth o several bacteria
including MRSA.

2322 Entrance Flooring SystemsEntrance Flooring Systems
At the time o print, Coral is the only
product to have BREEAM assessed
entrance looring products. For details
please see page 26
The construction o most Nuway entrance mats allows
them to be reversible, eectively doubling their liespan
The aluminium scraper bars in Nuway are made
rom 100% recycled aluminium
Rubber or aluminium waste generated by the Nuway
production process is recycled. Rubber pips are sent
to crown bowling clubs or gully lining and other
rubber waste is used in equestrian centres
Any yarn waste rom our Coral production is
reused by the yarn supplier
The Coral manuacturing plant has achieved virtually
zero landill. Waste yarns rom Coral manuacturing
are used in small entrance mats
Coral meets the requirements o Caliornia
Speciication section 01350 which relates to
indoor air quality
Entrance Flooring Systems
Installing an effective entrance system can stop up to 90% of the dirt and
moisture entering a building. As a result, this may save up to 65% of the
lifetime cleaning costs of the floor and reduce the use of cleaning materials.

A zoned approach
External primary mattingOutside the building entrance, primary matting
is the irst line o deence against ootborne
soil, scraping the coarsest dirt rom the soles o
shoes beore they cross the threshold.
Internal primary mattingImmediately beyond the external matting,
internal primary matting is required to remove
ootborne moisture and iner particles o soil.
Internal secondary mattingFlooring leading away rom the entrance
area in the reception, corridors etc must
be speciically designed to withstand heavy
traic and intensive cleaning regimes. They will
be prone to residual soiling and will inevitably
require a high level o cleaning to maintain
perormance and appearance.

This is the ramework by which a business addresses
the issues surrounding its environmental impacts,
including legal compliance.
BRE
The Building Research Establishment was
established 80 years ago and has a growing ocus on
improving the environmental perormance o buildings.
BREEAM
Building Research Establishment Environmental
Assessment Methodology. This scheme measures the
environmental impact o a material or product over a
set time period o 60 years.
The scheme was reclassiied in 2009 and now the
environmental rating o a product diers depending
on its application e.g. the same product could achieve
dierent BREEAM ratings i being used in a school
rather than an oice.
Also, where the manuacturing process or a category
o products is similar across many companies, e.g. vinyl,
the manuacturers may choose to display a generic
rating rather than one or each speciic product. In this
case, individual BREEAM product certiicates will not
be available.
Please see chart overlea or BREEAM ratings or all
Forbo products.
UK Green Building Council
Their mission is to dramatically
improve the sustainability o the
built environment, by radically
transorming the way it is planned,
designed, constructed, maintained
and operated. Forbo is a member.
LEED CHPS 01350
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This is
the leading green building certiication programme in
the US. LEED is a points based system or evaluating
the environmental proile o a building. Unlike BREEAM,
no single product can obtain a LEED credit.
Green Label Plus scheme
This orms part o the LEED scheme. This is
a voluntary industry testing programme or
carpet and adhesive products which aims
to establish the highest standard or indoor
air quality ever set by the US carpet industry.
The Carpet and Rug I nstitute o America (CRI) created
Green Label Plus to identiy carpets and adhesives that
are tested by an independent, certiied laboratory and
meet stringent criteria or low chemical emissions.
CRUK
Forbo Flooring is a member o Carpet Recycling UK.
CRUK has a target to divert 25% o carpet
waste rom landill by 2015 recovering
valuable raw materials. Since its inception in
2008, the landill diversion rate has increased
rom 2% to 10% with more than 40,000 tonnes o
waste carpet being recovered in 2010.
Carpet Recycling UK commissions research and
provides technical support to recyclers, Regular
regional meet the recycler sessions increase the
awareness that carpet can be recycled and have led
to increased reprocessing capacity being installed.
Specialist carpet recyclers have increased rom 6 to 30
in the last 2 years.

CRUK on carpet tile reclamation schemes, please visit

Flooring Sustainability Partnership
Forbo Flooring is a member o the Flooring
Sustainability Partnership.
The purpose o the Flooring
Sustainability partnership is to improve
the sustainability o all looring types
at all stages o the supply chain. FSP
aims to provide a single voice or the UK Flooring
industry to lobby and advise government o progress in
reducing the total amount o looring waste produced
and sent to landill.
Guide to green certificationThe way forward
Energy
We expect that the use o renewable electricity will
increase. In 2011, 10 o our 12 production acilities will
have some or all o their electricity supplied rom
renewable sources taking us to more than 95% o
electricity used rom renewable source over all our sites.
Reuse and RecyclingOur R&D, Engineering and Innovation teams will play an
important role as we analyse the way we engineer our
products and processes. In terms o waste we generate,
we will build upon our sound reuse and recycling
opportunities to minimise environmental impact and
maximise economic opportunity.
Water
We recognise that although most o our production
processes do not use water, in 2011 we will gather data
in respect o our water usage. Water is becoming an
increasingly important resource and we shall determine a
baseline rom which we will measure our improvements.
Green Design and Innovation
We believe that design, in environmental terms, is a very
important link in the chain and i we are to improve our LCA
result then design has a central role to play. Forbo Flooring
is placing great emphasis on Green Design and Innovation.
It is recognised that i we are to achieve our divisional
goals o becoming a sustainable and environmental
leader then we have to do things dierently.
SuppliersDuring 2010 we have been exploring how we can work
together with our main raw material suppliers to create
a better environment through the reduction o our LCA
by 25%. We have learned that many o our suppliers
have set their own targets to improve their own
environmental ootprint. In 2011 we will begin to use an
environmental scorecard to evaluate the environmental
perormance and the selection o our suppliers.
Forbo Way to Win programme
These projects are part o the total environmental
improvement program we are executing in 2011.
Forbo is continually looking for opportunities to create better environments.
Below are some examples of the areas where we hope to make further improvments.
