BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE, PILANI DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMMES DIVISION FIRST SEMESTER 2003- 2004 COURSE HANDOUT COURSE INSTRUCTOR: SUPERVISOR OF STUDENT CONCERNED COURSE DESCRIPTION: Consistent with the student’s professional background and work-environment, the student will be required to carry out work-oriented project independently . The student would be required to select an area of work that is considered vital to the employing organization. The student, in consultation with his/her Mentor, prepares the topic of the project and detailed project outline. The student carries on with the work- centered project, adhering to the guidelines provided in the course handout, taking all the prescribed evaluation components on time. At the end of the semester, the student should submit a comprehensive Project Report to the Institute for evaluation. The student will be evaluated on the basis of the various interim evaluation components, contents of the report and Seminar/Viva-Voce that may be conducted at BITS, Pilani. The final grades for Project Work are Non-Letter grades namely Excellent, Good, Fair and Poor. Non- Letter grades do not go into CGPA computation. PROJECT WORK EVALUATION SCHEME EC No Evaluation Component Scheduled Date to reach Pilani 1 Project Work outline Saturday August, 16, 2003 2 Mid- Semester Progress Saturday, October, 04, 2003 3 Final Report Saturday, November 22, 2003 Important Note: 1. Alongwith the Project Work Outline (EC-1) evaluation sheet, the student must give details of proposed topic of Project Work, objectives, methodology, references, particulars of Supervisor as well as one additional examiner in terms of Name, Designation, Qualification and address. 2. The Mid-Semester Progress Evaluation is to be based on Work Progress, Mid- Semester Report and the Mid- Semester Seminar/Viva 3. The Cover Page and third Page (Certificate from supervisor) of Final Project Work must be as given in Appendix- I. 4. The student should submit two word processed, hard bound, copies of Final Project Work to the Supervisor who will retain one copy and forward the other copy of the report with the final evaluation proforma (after the final Seminar/Viva evaluation) to the Dean, DLPD by Speed Post so as to reach us latest by November 22, 2003. Requests for extension of deadlines will not be entertained. 5. The student must be prepared to come to BITS, Pilani on the specified date between December 01, 2003 and December 24, 2003 to present and defend the Project work before a panel of examiners at BITS. Each student will be required to make a presentation for 20 minutes using Microsoft PowerPoint or Overhead Projector transparencies. The presentation will be followed by viva-voce for about 15 minutes. Students doing software development projects must be prepared to demonstrate their software product during their presentation. In case the demonstration of the cannot be shown due to some technical or business reasons, the student should bring a letter from the employing organization to that effect. 6. The final schedule for Project Work viva will be announced through the BITS DLP website by the second week of September 2003. 7. Any student who fails to complete the Project Work by the stipulated deadline and /or fails to appear for viva-voce at BITS, Pilani will be declared as Required to Register Again (RRA) in this semester and will be required to register again in Project Work with full fee payment in a subsequent semester. Topics for Project work must be chosen only among the following broad areas:

Each student should w ork independent ly on a chosen topic. Tw o or m ore students should not do any project joint ly . The chosen topic of work should be non- trivial, analytical, application-oriented and should involve substantial research and development effort based on a specific theme.

Students should choose a topic that they can present , dem onstrate, and defend the w ork done, to a panel of examiners at BITS, Pilani.

Mere configurat ion, installat ion and rout ine m aintenance, support or m anagem ent of system s or equipm ent will not be considered adequate for a Project Work. Mere survey of literature/data collection would also not be acceptable as a Project Work.
