nosing the air and ground, andacts as if it’s asking the cow,“Whatcha doin’?” If the calf issniffing the front feet and nosecoming out but still covered in thebirth sac, the neighbor calf islikely asking the cow, “What is thisstuff?” or “Did you know you gotsomethin’ stuck on your butt?”
The prying young neighbormight strike a conversation withthe unborn calf that is beginningto emerge instead: “Whatcha doin’in there?” or “Can you come outand play?”
In some instances, after having just calved, another cow’s peskycalf comes over to see what’s goingon. This is when a fresh calf fi-nally makes it to the outsideworld, is a little dazed and con-fused, and not on its feet yet, andan annoying neighbor calf asks thecow, “Can he/she come over andplay?” before the new pair has had
a chance to bond first. In othercases the nosy young neighbormight ask the new calf in the pas-ture if it can come over before thenewcomer has had a chance tostand on its feet for the first time.
Most often with annoyingneighbor calf situations, we seethe new mother cow busying her-self with her motherly instincts of licking her baby clean and oblivi-ous to any snoopy calves. Thesecows seem to tolerate putting upwith calves belonging to othercows busy eating hay rather thanwatching what their calves aredoing.
It isn’t until the annoyingneighbor calf tries to invite itself over for “dinner” that a newmother cow will draw the line. If the neighbor calf tries to moochmilk off the cow it usually gets thebunt.

Quasquicentennial farmranch award at SD Stat
Farm families who have en-dured 100 or 125 years of life onthe farm or ranch have the oppor-tunity to be recognized during theSouth Dakota State Fair onThursday, Aug. 29.
Century Farms have been recog-nized at the State Fair since 1984by the South Dakota Departmentof Agriculture and the SouthDakota Farm Bureau (SDFB). Twoyears ago, in recognition of theState Fair’s 125th anniversary, farms and ranches that have beenfamily-owned for 125 years ormore were recognized in aquasquicentennial event, and thattradition will continue in 2013.Recognition of the Quasquicenten-nial Farms will immediately fol-low the Century Farms program.
“Without the hard-working fam-ilies here in South Dakota, agri-culture would not be our No. 1 in-dustry,” said South Dakota Secre-tary of Agriculture Lucas Lentsch.
“We need to recognize their accom-

Garden Ga
Vertical GardeningWhat is vertical gardening? It
can be several kinds of gardeningthat features a vertical bed or con-tainers with a trellis that allowsthe plant to grow up verticallyrather than sprawling along theground. There are vertical gardenkits available at various gardencenters which tend to be a bitpricey.
You can create your own usingwooden or metal trellises, hangingbaskets, shelves, containers, awood frame, or any combination of these, to create a space-saving ver-tical garden. This type verticalgardening is great in urban areaswhere many homes and apart-ments have limited outdoor space. A combination of containers, shelves, and hanging basketsworks really well on a patio or bal-cony to create a complete gardenin a small space. If you can tacklea project like building a framewith cross-supports and shelvesbuilt-in, this works great and canbe an attractive feature in yourlandscape or on the deck or patio.
Vegetables are good candidatesfor a space-saving garden either inraised bed gardens, in-ground gar-dens, hanging gardens, or con-tainer gardens on the porch, patio, balcony or deck. Simply plantseeds or small plants as usual, in-stalling the support at the time of
planting to avoid causing damageto the plant roots or vines later.Climbing veggies ideal for a ver-
tical garden are: cucumbers, squash (acorn or butternut are
best), tomato green beans (polebeans. These wsystem such as tclimb upward.

This week has been mostly coldd dry. We did get a little showerst Monday night that barelympened the ground. May Day!ay Day! That old distress callas the first thing that crossed myind when our thermometer reg-ered 17 degrees early in theorning on May 1st. It has beenlow freezing every night all
eek long and that’s just too darnilly for spring. No wonder theay flowers haven’t shown up yet!ven though it’s been cold, I could-
help myself and I planted aboutlf of my big garden this week.
eub spent most of the weekanting barley and oats and nowe’re praying for rain.Grand River Grazing Associa-n president Tim Smith invited
e to the meeting with Denniseitzke, Forest Service Grass-nds Supervisor over the Dakotaairie Grasslands in North anduth Dakota, and the grazing as-ciation directors at the Dakota
dge in Lemmon Monday after-on. They wanted to determineho owned the fences that werestroyed and try to expedite theyment process for the ranchersd the local fire departments.Keith Winter, president of thecKenzie County Grazing Associ-ion at Watford City, ND also at-
tended the meeting. Their grazingassociation hired an attorney to re-search North Dakota law in regardto Fire Districts and the responsi-bilities and potential liabilities forpreventing or fighting fires withinthe confines of the McKenzieCounty Grazing Association. I’mgoing to ask our attorney in LRCto research South Dakota law tosee if we need to change any lawsin our state.
The Bismarck Tribune printedan editorial last week blasting theForest Service for telling ranchersthat it will be two years before thefederal agency will pay their dam-age claims. Here’s a quote from theeditorial: “That’s an unacceptabletimeframe, especially when a fed-eral agency was at fault and hadconducted the burn over objectionsof local landowners. Two years istoo long to have a dozen or soranchers carry the federal govern-ment. We’re talking mostly thecosts of feed and fences.”
I wasn’t able to go to Lemmonwhen South Dakota’s new Secre-tary of Agriculture Lucas Lentschand Courtney De La Rosa metwith the ranchers on Thursday, but I want to thank our Depart-ment of Ag for getting involved.
The High Plains Western Her-itage Center in Spearfish had its
volunteer luncheon Wednesday. Igot there in time to have dessert, coffee, and a good visit with sev-eral of these wonderful folks whoput in so many hours helping outat the Heritage Center. If youhaven’t visited the center lately, you should stop by soon. Theyhave so many interesting exhibitsthat it’s pretty easy for me tospend most of the day lookingthem over.
Did you see the article in theRapid City Journal this weekabout the teenager’s close en-counter with a mountain lion?Trevor Hanson did everything ex-perts tell you to do Monday after-noon when he stood face to facewith the big cat in the woods eastof Hill City, but none of it workedso he called 911 on his cell phonebecause the cat was between himand his vehicle. The standoff ended after the mountain lionslipped off into the woods whenGF&P got there 20 minutes later.
GF&P didn’t kill the lion since ithadn’t attacked Hanson, but thatwouldn’t have been my decision!
Casey eliminated more preda-tors in our neighborhood. So farthis week he’s shot three coyotesand a fox. Sorry to say, he hasn’tshot any coons lately.
