Topology

• The topology used in BISJ is called Flat network• Everyone is connected to everything.

VLAN

• A virtual LAN is a set of workplaces that can connect with each other as if they were on a separate LAN.

• You can only access the network you are on, eg Upper school can only access the upper school network.

• It is secure as other networks can not be accessed.

Blade Servers

• A blade server is a computer server but its size is small hence many can be added.

• A server can be added anytime.• One server can be used for multiple tasks.• If something fails, not every server has to be

rebooted. If that is the case, all the work is lost. But in blade server, only that specific server needs to be rebooted.

• It is one physical server, but there virtual servers.• Each blade can have different servers.• Eg of blade servers; email server, security server,

backup server.

Back up tapes

• Each tape consists of 1.8 terabyte of memory.• There are two different types of backing up: On sight and

Off sight.• On sight is within the school campus and the backup is

done termly.• The off sight is done yearly and kept outside the school

campus.• There is incremental data backup during the weekend,

and on weekdays its only new files

UPS

• If power goes off, there is the UPS to supply energy for 30 mins, this is enough time for the experts to go and shut the system down properly.

• If more time is needed, there are generators available for more power supply. As the generator supplies power to the UPS if needed.

Symantec

• Mail security system.• Filters out bad words, 97% of the email received in

school that is junk.• Blocks out no subject emails (but alerts sender to add a

subject).• Quarantine: Puts unsure emails into your inbox asking if

it is needed.

Network

• If the expert hasn’t specified websites, at the end of the system is a “deny” which denies all the websites that the expert hasn’t mentioned or allowed.

• If proxies are used, the expert will be aware as the system will detect the user trying to go through them.

• Rogue: A new device that is detected onto a network (mobile phones).

• If people are on the same channel, it causes the internet to become slower as it keeps colliding and killing the connection.
