ALookattheSinner’sPrayer

For decades, crusades have been conducted around the world, and thousands have responded to give their lives to Jesus. Conscious of their sins, they are told to simp‐ly say the “sinner’s prayer.” Of even greater impact is the preaching by televangelists and church pastors who tell those who are lost

that if they will say this sinner’s prayer, God will immediately forgive them of all their sins.

There are slight varia ons in the wording of this prayer, but they all have this format. “Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. In Your name. Amen.” The lives of many have been changed, but a vital ques on must be an‐swered. Does the saying of this prayer bring salva on?

When did this prayer originate? Google to find the answer. “Some affirm that it evolved, in some form or another, during the early days of the Protestant Reforma on. Others believe it originated as late as the eighteenth century revival movement.” One study provides strong evidence that the sin‐ner’s prayer originated in the early twen eth century.

Think of the implica ons of the preceding paragraph.

It implies that the sinner’s prayer was unknown by the church in the first century. The church, directed by the apostles, told millions how to be saved, but never told them to pray this prayer. It is not found even one me in the Bible. It is not found in the Bible anywhere in any of the forms used today.

It is not found in the wri ngs of church leaders of the second, third, fourth, fi h, sixth, etc. centuries! It was never used for fi een hundred years a er the church began. It is not

from the mind of God but from the imagina on of mere mortals.

If the sinner’s prayer is God’s answer to the ques on of what one must do in order to be saved, then was not one single person saved beginning at the death of Christ un l the sixteenth century? Sure‐ly something must be wrong with giving this prayer as God’s plan to save mankind.

Let me suggest the path every man should follow in finding salva on. Read the book of Acts. It is the history of the church from its beginning un l near the end of Paul’s life. Read about the spread of the church around the world. Read the Divine record of people asking what they must do about their sins. Note that never was any man told to pray this prayer. The answer given was always the same. Honestly seek to find the answer to life’s most important ques on. Read the book of Acts. Discover for yourself. Then do what they did!

By Dan Jenkins

If this prayer was

never prayed un-

l 1500, was any-

one saved before

then?

WhatShouldWeCalltheChurch? In a recent religious blog, the author (a prominent member of a large denomina‐

on himself) reviewed what he called “Contemporary Trends in Church Names.” Space will not allow a lis ng of all the com‐mon church names that he found but no ce what is making the top of the list today:

“Point” has become ubiquitous: LifePoint; CrossPoint. Add an “e” to be fancy: GracePointe.

“Life” has a new life: Life Church; Real Life; New Life; LifePoint or LifePointe.

Five biggies the past ten years: Journey; Bridge; Foundry; Mosaic; and Genera on.

“Cross” has made a surge: Cross Church; Cross Fellowship; Cross Roads; CrossPoint.

Meaningful names: Impact; Poten al; Epic; Transfor‐ma on; Renova on; Innovate.

“Fellowship” can be found in almost any town. It usually has other words, but some mes just Fellowship Church.

“Grace.” Especially in the Reformed churches.

Many churches like the “New” factor: New Life; New Hope; New Song; NewPoint; NewPointe.

Moving on up: Elevate; Ver cal; Summit.

What do you no ce about these names being used for various groups today? In short, not a single one of them is found in the Bible. But, is that really a big deal?

Do you realize that without the Bible, we do not know a single thing about the church? Everything that we know about the church—its origin, its establishment, its organiza on and even its name—is found in the Bible! So, if we wanted to know what the Lord wanted us to call the church, there is one

source to which we must look! To use a name that is not found in the Bible is to use a designa on created by man rather than by God! Why would we do that?

The church of the Bible wears the name of its Founder, its Owner, its Savior, its Bridegroom. There are various designa ons for the church in the New Testament: “the church” (Col. 1:18); “the body of Christ” (Eph. 4:12); “the church of God” (1 Cor.

1:2); “the church of the living God” (1 Tim. 3:15); “churches of Christ” (Rom. 16:16); “the kingdom of God” (Mark 9:1); “the kingdom of the Son of His love” (Col. 1:13); “the house of God” (1 Tim. 3:15). Compare these Scriptural designa ons for the church with the ones that are popular today. The designa‐

ons in Scripture are given as marks of ownership, for the church does not belong to man but to Christ!

If a “church” today wears a name different than one found in the Bible, can it be the church of the Bible?

By David Sproule

To use a name

that is not found

in the Bible is to

use a designa on

created by man.

AnUnexpectedReminder Life has a way of teaching us. One of the lessons I learned as a teenager involved a rusty metal box. My brother and I were cleaning a yard and preparing it to be sod‐ded. We kept kicking around this old metal box that looked like an Altoid box. The guy we were working for eventually saw it,

picked it up and opened it. Inside was a wedding ring set. I couldn't believe I had been kicking that around. A missed opportunity. Recently, I saw a folded piece of lined paper in the church parking lot. My mind went back to those wedding rings, “You never know what it could be,” I thought. I picked it up, I opened it, and I read it. Wri en in pencil were these words, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My right‐eous right hand” (Isa. 41:10). What a treasure to be reminded of.

I am not one to go all “foot prints of Jesus” Hallmark card about these kind of things. However, consider this. The same prophet wrote, “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth and making it bear and sprout, and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; so will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty,

without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the ma er for which I sent it” (55:10‐11). In that moment, His word accomplished exactly what it was supposed to. I am not saying God had someone write that verse and leave it in the parking lot for me to find. I am saying thousands of years later, through different languages, in a different culture, on a different con nent someone copied down God’s message on common paper with a No. 2 pencil. In that moment, it was as

powerful to the reader as it was to those who re‐ceived it from the hand of Isaiah.

At the me, God was communica ng to His people about future deliverance. Who wouldn’t want a message of assurance from their God that He will strengthen, help and uphold you? Later in the same chapter He speaks about the false gods. “But when I look, there is no one, and there is no counselor

among them who, if I ask, can give an answer. ‘Behold, all of them are false; their works are worthless, their molten images are wind and emp ness’” (Isa. 41:28‐29). With the false gods there is no such assurance and no confidence of a god that claims us and reassures us of His presence. No one to comfort.

I found comfort and encouragement from the mes‐sage of my God wri en on scrap paper in the parking lot. No ma er what form we find it in, His message is s ll valid. He s ll speaks to His people. PSA, please don’t li er in the parking lot.

By Josh Blackmer

His message is

s ll valid.

Most feel it is morally acceptable It would not surprise you (or probably even bother or catch your a en on) to find out that 89% of Americans believe that birth control is morally acceptable or that 59% believe that wearing clothing made of animal fur is morally acceptable. But it’s some of the other things, that this Gallup poll found that Americans believe are morally acceptable, which should get our a en on, such as: divorce (72%), sex be‐tween an unmarried man and woman (67%), having a baby outside of marriage (62%), gay or lesbian rela ons (60%). Those numbers, as you would expect, are on the rise! The acceptance of these moral issues in our na on is not on the decline, which means that standing for and defending BIBLICAL and CHRISTIAN values and stand‐ards is going to become more necessary and, likely, more diffi‐cult. Are you ready? Are you up for the challenge? We must NOT blend in to the moral depravity around us (Rom. 12:2) or show acceptance of it (2 John 9‐11), but we must shine forth as the light and image of Jesus Christ (Ma . 5:16; Gal. 2:20). May God help us do just that! – DS

“Who can this be?” When Jesus calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee, the disci‐ples marveled, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” (Ma . 8:27). But, a er everything they saw that day, they should have known Jesus was truly Lord of all. Earlier in the day, leprosy obeyed Jesus (8:1‐3), then paralysis obeyed Jesus (8:5‐13), then fever obeyed Jesus (8:14‐15), then

demons obeyed Jesus (8:16), and then sickness‐es obeyed Jesus (8:16‐17). So, when the wind and the waves obeyed Jesus (8:26‐27), they were just falling in line with everything else that had obeyed Jesus that day! He is truly “Lord of all” (Acts 10:36)!

So the ques on today is—“Is He YOUR Lord?” If so, what evi‐dence would there be of such? The leprosy, paralysis, fever, demons, sicknesses, wind and waves obeyed Jesus without any “yeah, but” or any “what if?” or any excuses or any finagling of any kind! There was just immediate compliance! So again, is Jesus YOUR Lord? Or do leprosy, paralysis, fever, demons, sicknesses, wind and waves obey be er than you? – DS
