    2014 SCHEDULE

The name will always connect fa-ther and son in the publics eye.

But when it comes to what Vinny Pa-pale has done on the football field atBishop Eustace Prep, the legacy heleaves when this season is completewill have been orchestrated on his own.

Theres no denying Vince Papale, the former Philadelphia Eagle and sub-ject of the movie Invincible, hasplayed a role in the maturation processof his son as an athlete. The two sharethe same drive, the same determina-tion, a similar work ethic. But therecomes a point when the name on theback of the uniform becomes irrele-vant and what gets done on the field be-comes the determining factor.

As a player, his dad separated him-self early on and let Vinny make a namefor himself when he was a sophomore, coach Rob Cormier said. Vinny has atremendous work ethic and has moldedhimself into what I think is one of thetop defensive backs in South Jersey.

As a defensive back, weve neverhad one like him. Hes separated him-self. Hell be one of the top players toever come out of here, at least sinceIve been here.

Papale had 49 tackles as the Crusad-ers finished 6-5 last season. He also hadfour interceptions, 10 pass blocks andtwo forced fumbles. He averaged 25.3yards on kickoff returns and 13.4 onpunt returns.

As a wide receiver, he had 28 catchesfor 367 yards and five touchdowns. Cor-mier expects those numbers to possi-bly double.

Hes an athlete, the coach says.At 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Papale is

likely to be on the field for just aboutevery play. He has a scholarship offerfrom Campbell University, while thelikes of Delaware, Duke and Wake For-est have expressed interest.

Im hoping for a big senior season offense, defense, special teams, hesaid. Im someone who wont backdown, someone who would never laydown on the field for anyone. Im just ahard worker and pretty determined.Im determined on every play.

If the ball is in my hands, I just haveto make a play. I need to do everything Ican to help my team get in the end zone, get an interception.

Papale played as a sophomore andmade great strides as a junior. As a sen-ior, hes now someone teammates lookto for leadership and playmaking abil-ity. Expectations are extremely high asBishop Eustace competes in the WestJersey Football League Royal Division, and Papale is one who will be in thespotlight.

    There was a tremendous jump

from where he was as a sophomore to hisjunior year, but this summer ... hes com-pletely different from where he was lastyear, Cormier said. Hes the guy. Hesgoing to lock up one on one with Cam-dens top guy (Brad Hawkins), Glassbo-ros guy (Juwan Johnson). The kids be-lieve in him, and he believes in himself.

A big punt return, a kickoff return, abig down where we need to throw the ballor he needs to lock down the opponentsbest receiver, thats the kid whos goingto do it for us.

Papale realizes this is it; this is the lasttime hell play on Friday nights withthose who became his brothers just fouryears ago. Its an exciting time and onehe plans to fully embrace.

Its been crazy. Being able to play as

a sophomore and now coming into mysenior season, its just flown by, he said.I cant believe Im a senior and have tostart thinking about college. Its been agreat experience, the best four years ofmy life easily.

Its a bittersweet feeling. I remem-ber like it was yesterday suiting up as afreshman. I never thought this daywould come. Time flew by completely, and I cant believe its my senior year.Im excited because we have a great sen-ior class and Im excited to go to battlewith them on Friday nights. I think wecan make a run at a lot of things.
