Mr. Trinde has sent us a letter, asking us categorieally whether we have seen an authentic copy of the decision of the Poor-law Board in reference to the charges made against Mr. Clement ? If not, what means we have of judging that the charges have broken down? And if we have, why we do not give extracts to substantiate our opinion? We have seen an authentic copy of the decision of the Poor-law Board sent to the Kingston Board of Guardians. The best proof that the "charges" have broken down is the fact that Mr. Clement still retains his post of medical officer. The report of the Poor-law Board characterises the so- called giving a "false certificate" as " a mistake that probably arose from , his (Mr. Clement’s) omission to strike out the printed words to the effect that he had visited the case." The Poor-law Board further says: "It does not appear that Charles Smith stood in need of Mr. Clement’s professional services, being under treatment at the Hospital for Consumption." In regard to the charge of neglect, the guardians are requested to inform Mr. Clement, "that had it not been for the evidence given by the relieving officer as regards the circumstances of Caroline Harris’s previous illness, and for the fact that the order for attendance was not marked urgent,’ the Board would have been unable to allow him to continue in the office of medical officer." In other words, the charges have "broken down." A Studerat.-The date does not occur to us at the moment. Any medical bookseller would give the necessary information. H. W. B.-Yes, if qualified. THE communication of Dr. Wardell shall, if possible, appear in our next. MILK FOUND IN THE BREASTS OF INFANTS. To the Editor of THE LANCET. SIR,—In answer to your correspondent, Mr. Mitchell, regarding the above, I beg to state that on the 29th ultimo I was attending a male child, aged nine days, for obstinate constipation. Whilst manipulating the abdumen, I perceived the breasts unusually large. I examined them, and found a nodu- lated substance in each, about the size of a walnut. Applying firm pressure, unmistakable milk exuded, to the amount of about half a drachm, from each. The woman told me that her last child, now two years old, had the same when an infant. I was rather amused by the ready treatment the mother proposed to adopt. She said, " I must get a backening plaster fur it; that is what I cured the other one with." Yours truly, May, 1867. EDWARD M. OWENS. To the Editor of THE LANCET. SIR,—In corroboration of the value of the treatment recommended by Mr. Joseph Thompson, jun., for infantile lactation, I beg to state that I had lately a case in which the breasts of a female child were unusually developed at birth, and when she was seven days old they became hard, swollen, and nodulated. On the twelfth day they were larger than a full-sized walnut, and milk was easily pressed from the nipples. I desired the mother not to squeeze or in any way to irritate the glands; to apply bread-and-water couthees, and to give attention to the infant’s bowels. By this simple treatment the secre- tion and swelling gradually 3ubsided, and entirely disappeared in about twelve days. Yours faithfully, Hampstead, May 4th, 1867. W, HEATH STRANGE, M.D.
