Remember the Fountain of Love. Virtual Experience Helps Caregivers Understand Dementia According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 16.1 million Americans provide unpaid caregiving services to someone living with dementia. The right dementia care includes patience and kindness, and sensitivity to what the older adult is experiencing. To provide a better understanding for caregivers of what their loved ones are going through, two 2-hour Virtual Dementia Tour sessions were held Feb. 19 at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle (Dothan) by Lori Fitzpatrick, Director of Community & Volunteer Engagement at Covenant Care out of Tallahassee, FL. Specialized sensory tools and instructions were used to give caregivers a hands-on virtual experience that mimics the physical and mental challenges faced by persons with dementia. “It only lasted 4 minutes, but it seemed like a lifetime,” said Karla Dooling, event participant and current family member of a dementia resident at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle. “Your heart just broke all over again for people who have dementia. Some things are a lot more powerful than words and that experience was.” Karla shared her personal journey with session participants, recalling how her mother, Zelle Tatum, experienced 20 years of dementia with the last 10 in dementia care at Wesley Place on Honeysuckle, then Wesley Manor. Karla recounted, “When mom was sick, I remember praying, ‘God, don’t let my suffering be wasted. Let me help other people.’” Karla said that God has answered that prayer a million times over, and she was grateful to have the virtual experience. “I learned so much today. It was just incredible.” As a dementia and Alzheimer’s care provider in Dothan, Wesley Place on Honeysuckle is interested in educating family members and the community about dementia and its signs, symptoms and available caregiver support. Love Is In The AirLove was in the air on Valentine’s Day at  Wesley Gardens

(Montgomery). Dining services team members served a scrumptious lunch, accompanied by the beautiful harp music of Marie Barnes. It was definitely a place where the “touch of God’s love is ever-present and ageless.” Special thanks to Dollar General for donating the Valentine balloons!

Fair Haven (Birmingham) residents Bernie and Lila Barton shared some of their story for an article that appeared in February’s special Senior Section of Southern Jewish Life magazine.

It’s About Family “Jewish life is all about family,” said Lila Barton in the setting of her Methodist Home community. “As soon as we moved in, we felt like we had a whole new family.” Lila, 85, and her husband Bernie, 89, moved just one year ago to Fair Haven, part of Methodist Homes of Alabama & Northwest Florida, and say they couldn’t be happier about their choice. When giving directions to their apartment, Lila tells her guests, “It’s the one with the Mezuzah on the door.”

When asked about being Jewish in a predominately Christian community, Lila said, “It doesn’t make a difference. Some know about us and some do not, but it doesn’t seem to matter. Everyone is friendly and takes care of one another. If I need something, I can just knock on anyone’s door and say I need… and they know I would do the same for them.”

One of the Bartons’ favorite pastimes is just being with other people. They

Minister Devotes 13 Years & Counting to Methodist HomeEpworth House (Selma)  residents are blessed to have

Rev. Daniel Martin to lead a Bible Study every Tuesday morning. He has been coming to Epworth House since 2005. Rev. Martin is the pastor of Bethel Church in Selma. He is also a member of “We Care Prison Ministry”, which travels to Alabama prisons, preaching God’s love to inmates and reminding them that God has a plan for their lives. In addition, Reverend Martin travels all the streets of Selma carrying a large cross. In his “Crosswalk”, he gives out New Testaments to people as he prays with people and  shares God’s love.

also love playing bridge, local theater, and meeting new people. They have traveled extensively, and have found themselves particularly fascinated by places where the culture and lifestyle is markedly different from life in the United States.

On one such traveling adventure, Lila and Bernie found an unexpected family connection. While visiting a beautiful synagogue in Holland, they discovered the portrait of a man who had the same name as Lila’s mother’s surname. They took a picture of the portrait and reached out to their local historical society upon their return to the United States. The couple discovered that the man was indeed Lila’s great-great-(and many more greats) Uncle who had been a rabbi in Amsterdam in the 15th century.

BIRMINGHAM

The Auxiliary of Fair Haven (Birmingham) has been operating a Nearly New Shop on the retirement community campus for more than 45 years. The concept is simple, but the payoff is enormous. The Fair Haven Auxiliary collects donations of clothing, housewares, shoes, jewelry, furniture and more -- almost any resalable item. What they do with the donated items makes a difference in people’s lives.

Nearly New Shop Co-Chairpersons Caroline Thompson and Kathryn Ragland are the current volunteer organizers and operators of the Nearly New Shop at Fair Haven. Because of their efforts, Fair Haven enjoys a unique ministry for members of its retirement community and beyond its walls. Here are five ways that the Nearly New Shop is a win in Birmingham!

Nearly New Shop

Win #1 – Donations are tax-deductible. Fair Haven enjoys status as a Methodist Home for the Aging, which is a 501(c)(3) organization doing business as Methodist Homes of Alabama & Northwest Florida.

Win #2 – Shoppers take home clothing and other goods at bargain prices. Posted hours of Tuesdays 1-4 pm, Thursdays 10 am – 4 pm, and Saturday 10:30 am – 4:00 pm.

Win #3 – Fair Haven’s Social workers get items FREE for residents in need

Win #4 – 100% of sales support projects and programs for residents, including the Fountain of Love.

Win #5 – Overflow items are re-donated to Eastern Area Christian Ministries (EACM) for needy families.

Hospital Inpatient Rehab vs. Skilled Rehabilitation ServicesAfter an accident, illness, injury or surgery, your doctor

may recommend that you spend time in a rehabilitation center to strengthen your body and enable you to return to your normal way of life. Two types of rehabilitation centers are available for older adults (typically those age 55+), Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation and Skilled Rehabilitation Services. Both provide the same clinical care and rehabilitative therapy for recovery, but they can have vastly different schedules and timeframes for your rehabilitation, as well as vastly different physical environments. How do you know what is best for you?

Your insurance company uses the term “Inpatient Rehab” when referring to short-term rehabilitation in a hospital setting that requires 3-4 hours of rehabilitation beginning on the day of admission. Your insurance company uses the term “Skilled Rehab” when referring to short-term rehabilitation in a community (like Fair Haven or Wesley Place on Honeysuckle) which provides skilled nursing care outside a hospital setting with rehabilitation that can be tailored to the intensity needs and capabilities of a patient.

With both Inpatient Rehab and Skilled Rehab, you can expect Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy available to you six to seven days a week, in most cases. Both providers can include a regimen of intensive rehabilitation of 3+ hours per day beginning at admission. In addition, 24-hour RN coverage, wound care, and IV antibiotics are usually available.

Both will have discharge planning services to assist with the transition to home or to another level of care.

But when a patient needs to gradually build up a tolerance for rehab, or if more time is needed for recovery, that is when Skilled Rehab makes more sense. If you are in the Dothan or Birmingham area and find yourself in need of the services of a Skilled Rehabilitation center, we hope you’ll take a look at Fair Haven (Birmingham) or Wesley Place on Honeysuckle (Dothan). Both of our

Methodist Homes rehabilitation communities are built in the Household Model, where rehab guests direct their own care, enjoying a private rehab suite in a setting that reflects home.

Fortunately, most doctors and insurance companies will honor the patient’s choice of rehabilitation centers for their recovery. We would love to be YOUR choice!
