Nason, a subsidiary of Bird, is currently completing two projects for Strathcona Storage Limited Partnership and its majority partner, ATCO Energy Solutions, at their salt cavern site just east of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta — a brine pond and associated pump house, as well as a sedimentation pond and pump house. The brine pond will contain the salt water that is extracted from the salt caverns to make way for the hydrocarbon storage. The pond is designed to hold approximately 606,000 m3 of brine and is lined with a multi-layer HDPE membrane. Pumping brine to and from the cavern, the pump house contains three vertical turbine pumps that are capable of transporting approximately 340 m3 of product per hour.

The sedimentation pond scope of work includes the construction of one pond with two operating cells (each cell is 15,000 m3 usable volume for a total of 30,000 m3 in the pond) and a pump house to remove water runoff, facilitate primary water treatment and then pump the water to the various oil and gas facilities in the area for use as process water. Nason self-performed the concrete pump house structure, the pipe fabrication, pipe installation, and electrical and instrumentation scope. Both projects are being completed with tight schedules to meet the summer 2016 completion date. Schedule constraints have resulted in continuous shifts to complete the pump house construction on time.

Faced with regional factors such as extreme cold, sparse population, unique scheduling, logistical challenges and a four month winter shutdown, Bird completed the design and construction of the new Hay River Health Centre, replacing the existing hospital that was built in 1965.

The facility has 16 inpatient hospital beds and serves a population of over 5,500 people from Hay River and surrounding remote communities. It focuses on providing medical services on an outpatient basis, reflecting the continental shift to ambulatory care. The new build provides primary care, acute and emergency care services and medical/surgical day care.

The new centre is a single-storey, pile-supported, steel frame structure with a prefinished metal panel system that includes a cement fibre panel to withstand the extreme weather. Based on its size and location, a single storey building was determined to be more efficient and cost effective. A stringent code-compliant air handling system, exceeding the CSA standards for airborne isolation, was a priority to allow the facility to meet infection control requirements.

Pro Cycle, a motorcycle dealership, was built by Bird using 26 tilt-up concrete panels, each 25 feet high and weighing an average of 35 tons. The panels were cast on-site. Once cured, they were hoisted into place using mobile cranes and stabilized using a temporary steel support system.

Building information modelling (BIM) tools were used extensively throughout this project. From the onset, the owner had a conceptual Revit model that was used to convey their design requirements. Bird further evolved this model into many design iterations, using AutoCAD Civil 3D to provide site analysis of different site locations and layouts.

During the working drawing phase, all of the consultants designed in Revit with an add-in collaboration software that provided near real-time synchronization of the models. Additionally, the models were uploaded to Autodesk BIM 360 Glue software to allow access to all parties involved in the project. Our coordinated efforts ensured a timely delivery of the project, which allowed the client to move in two weeks ahead of the contractual handover date.

The new performing arts facility is comprised of four state-of-the-art performance venues for music, theatre, dance and film: a 775-seat concert hall, a 160-seat dance theatre, a 300-seat recital hall and a 200-seat film theatre.

Upon award of the project, Bird, together with the architect and the structural steel subcontractor determined that the development would benefit from embedding the virtual design construction process. Progressing the structural, mechanical and architectural model to the fabrication drawings in the virtual space allowed the team to employ clash detections between the facility’s components, review construction schedules and verifying site logistics. BIM tools were also used as a means to visualize the design in showcasing the project to potential donors.

In partnership with Brock University, the City of St. Catharines agreed to lease a portion of the theatre to the university. With its newly constructed performing arts school (also built by Bird) located directly beside the performing arts centre, Brock was eager to leverage the facility’s space for the start of the fall 2015 semester. However, due to the extreme cold weather experienced early in construction, as well as the owner’s request for significant design changes, the initial target date appeared no longer achievable. Subsequently, Bird proposed a phased approach to the remaining construction, focusing on completing the university’s leased area first. Successfully delivering the leased portion of the facility in time, Bird continued with the remaining phase in the following months. In early November, the second phase of the project was completed with a grand opening in the much anticipated gala.

Bird, and joint-venture partner Civeo Corporation, have been selected by LNG Canada as the contractor for the design and construction of the new Cedar Valley Lodge in Kitimat, BC. The new lodge will house a 4,500 person workforce required during construction of the proposed liquefaction and export facility.

The lodge will have a total floor space of over 111,480 square metres, including a number of core buildings at over 24,150 square metres with a kitchen and dining area of almost 7,430 square metres, entertainment areas of almost 3,250 square metres, and a sports and recreational facility of over 5,200 square metres. Final actual numbers may vary as the conceptual design progresses through detailed engineering.

We are confident that the Bird-Civeo Joint Venture will be able to successfully complete this project based on our past experience with major design-build industrial buildings; our established presence in Kitimat, including strong connections with the community; our solid partnership based on the

collaborative efforts in Kitimat to complete the Sitka Lodge; as well as our extensive and complementary knowledge of worker accommodations design, construction and operations.

In the coming months, Bird-Civeo and our design and engineering partners will complete detailed design and planning activities. Despite being in a challenging global energy market environment, LNG Canada’s joint-venture participants still plan to make a final investment decision in late 2016.

The new terminal features two car dealerships on the same lot, a 1,585-square-metre facility for Audi and 2,930-square metre two-storey Volkswagen facility. Bird’s scope of work consisted of a full build package including site services, foundations, masonry, custom curtain walls with glazing and infloor heating systems.

The Audi dealership features many custom signature finishes including speciality lighting, metal ceiling, large porcelain tile and honeycomb exterior siding. Pre-installation meetings and physical mock-ups of the 60-degree curved wall and large floor tiles were completed to meet the client’s expectations. As a structural component of the building, the curved wall is a floor to ceiling feature with a radius and sweeping angle. Precision work was completed to ensure the accuracy of the wall’s layout and finished with a speciality coating to resemble asphalt.

For all Bird projects, the management of subcontractors requires that Bird’s standards for safe production, quality of work, financial capacity and depth of resources are all achieved. As the project commenced, Bird met with all subcontractors weekly to outline short-term goals and address all queries promptly to ensure the project was completed to the highest quality.

H.J. O’Connell (HJO), a division of Bird, has completed the contract to supply and construct shoreline electrodes at L’Anse au Diable in Labrador, and Dowden’s Point in Newfoundland. Each electrode site location will be connected to a converter station at Muskrat Falls and Soldiers Pond respectively, as part of the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project. The electrode sites are high-capacity grounding systems that are installed at each end of a high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission system.

HJO completed the civil and marine portion of the electrode sites on time and on budget. Each electrode system was comprised of 80 perforated HDPE wells (approximately 15 metres long) placed vertically, to accept electrode element rods and buried in porous rocks of a breakwater for protection against ice and ocean waves. Major components of the civil scope included rock drilling, blasting and hauling over 150,000 tonnes of rock materials to each electrode location, construction of access roads, 80 electrode wells, buried cable duct banks, pull boxes, trenches and junction boxes.

Each electrode location involved the construction of the breakwater structure, which required approximately 90,000 tonnes of core material, 10,000 tonnes of filter and 50,000 tonnes of six to eight ton armour stone in the Atlantic Ocean, in water depths up to six metres.

As the first project completed by Bird for Memorial University (MUN), the team has completed a major renovation to the existing St. John’s College building on the MUN campus. The four-storey building was constructed in the mid-60s as a campus residence with an attached chapel and currently it is the home of School of Social Work.

Bird, assembling a team of local contractors, completed selective interior demolition; interior and exterior asbestos and lead paint abatement; partial roof replacement; exterior envelope retrofit including new masonry and a cultured stone façade; interior finishes and numerous mechanical and electrical upgrades.

On a tight campus site with only one access point and limited space for material laydown, all deliveries were handled on a just-in-time basis. With only a small parking lot that was used by the campus personnel during the day, the team had to schedule all deliveries to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening.

The team also encountered many obstacles during demolition due to undocumented renovation plans spanning the building’s lifetime. Working with incomplete drawings, the team processed multiple changes to the original scope, which were addressed with cost-effective solutions to tie-in the new work with existing systems.

Bird has completed the construction of a 4,370-cubic-metre below ground water storage reservoir and 1,750-square-metre pre-engineered water treatment plant with a capacity of 150-litres per second. The plant provides clean water to the residents throughout the regional municipality.

The scope of work included membrane equipment, process mechanical work, instrumentation, a raw water settling pond and pump house, upgrade of existing intake pump house, water main connections to the correctional centre, and underground pipelines for raw water, settled raw water, sewage, process waste, and associated works.

Bird Winnipeg self-performed all concrete form work and slabs — an increasingly important aspect of our business and services offered in the Winnipeg region. Over 2,570-cubic-metres of concrete was poured during the winter months. In order to meet committed delivery date, Bird designed and constructed cold weather mitigation systems including winter hoarding to deliver the project on time.

As the largest fire evacuation in the province’s history, the devastating Alberta wildfire is one that touches the Bird family deeply.

In order to encourage a coordinated relief response, the Alberta Government and the Government of Canada have matched all donations to the Canadian Red Cross from May 5 to May 31. Accordingly, Bird is donating $50,000 to the Canadian Red Cross, matching our employees’ donation of over $31,000.

Fort McMurray has long been a part of our company’s success story. While the devastation to property and neighbourhoods is severe and the impact on people’s lives incalculable, we remain thankful and amazed that due to the efforts of so many individuals, agencies, governments, organizations and companies, the loss of human life was not the story of this tragic event.

Communities can be rebuilt, and Bird is committed to being a partner in the long days and extensive work that lies ahead. In doing so, Bird has formed the Fort McMurray Community Assistance Committee (FMCAC) to explore opportunities for Bird to lend a helping hand. The focus of the FMCAC is to provide the opportunity for all Bird personnel to take part in supporting the Fort McMurray Community, including volunteer efforts for food and item donations, as well as temporary accommodations for residents who cannot yet return home.
