American GoldfinchThe American Goldfinch comes into town around September.

Males are brightly colored (as seen below) and females arebrown. They lay 3-7 blue eggs from May- August. Their favorite

foods are oil sunflower and nyjer (closer to the springtime).

American RobinThe American Robin is most commonly found on lawns

searching for earthworms. They are known for their happysongs. They can be found in cities, towns, and the wilderness.

Bald EagleThe Bald Eagle has many amazing characteristics and is

rightfully our nations bird. They have fantastic eyesight (it is 5-6 times better than ours). They can also see 1-1 miles away.

They can swim and fly up to heights of 10,000 feet.

Black Capped ChickadeeThe Black Capped Chickadee is a year round resident for us,

although they do tend to the more southern parts of the areafor fall and winter. They travel in flocks and have their own

social hierarchy (Males have more power than Females and the

elders have more than the younger ones).

Blue JayBlue Jays typically travel in small flocks. They are highly

protective of their nests. They have a talent for imitation ofother birds around them. They like to eat corn, grain, berries,

seeds, insects, and peanuts.

Carolina WrenThe Carolina Wren is common in this area in the summer. They

are small, but have a very loud voice. Which is ironic, becausethey are also shy.

Common LoonThe Common Loon has solid bones which means that it cannot

easily stay afloat. These birds, however, are very powerfulswimmers. Their most distinctive features are their eyes. In the

winter they have grey eyes, but in the summer they have bright

red ones.

Downy WoodpeckerThe Downy Woodpecker is the smallest of the woodpeckers.

They are permanent residents, but travel to the more southernparts of the area for winter. They drum instead of sing and love

sunflower seeds.

Eastern Blue BirdThe Eastern Blue Bird is very family oriented. Females lay 3-8

eggs. These are typically pale blue, but can occasionally bewhite. They will eat shelled sunflower seeds and they love to

play in birdbaths.

Great Blue HeronThe Great Blue Heron is a very cautious bird. They let out 3-4

hoarse croaks when alarmed and take flight to get way fromwhat they think is dangerous. They nest either in trees or on

the ground. They are year round residents, but head to the

more southern part of the area for the winter. They are very

adaptable and shy.

Great Horned OwlThe Great Horned owl is a very quiet bird. Their wings allow

them to fly almost silently through the air. They have greathearing and are extremely adaptable. These owls, like others

are nocturnal, so you cant typically see them during the day.

Northern CardinalThe Northern Cardinal (our state bird) are year round residents

of Virginia. The males are a brilliant red and the females are alight brown. The females also have a more complex song to sing

than the males. They lay 3-4 eggs and until they hatch the male

will feed the female.

Northern MockingbirdThe Northern Mockingbird is known for its imitation. Males

usually sing louder and more often than Females. They are alsoknown for their songs. The Males, however, sing a different

song in spring than in fall.

Ruby Throated HummingbirdThe Ruby Throated Hummingbird has a metallic green back and

a black bill. Their brains take up 4% of their bodyweight. Theyhave excellent memory, yet no sense of smell. They are also the

only birds that are able to fly backwards.

White-Breasted NuthatchThe White-Breasted Nuthatch is a small bird when compared to

others. While they may be small, they are loud. They lay 5-9eggs and are year round residents.

Wild TurkeyThe Wild Turkey is common in this area all year. You can see

them gobbling and walking around in the woods. For a whilethere was a decline in their population, but they have mostly

recovered.

Tufted TitmouseThe Tufted Titmouse is gray with large black eyes. They have an

echoing voice and are commonly found by feeders in theeastern deciduous forest.
