CGIAR Framework
4
Global challenges in Agriculture
• World Development Report 2008
• New food price equation
– Population growth
– Urbanization
– Water/land scarcity
– Climate Change
• Renewed donor interest in agriculture

The Consortium of CGIAR Centers play a role to meet these challenges
7
CGIAR Reform
• Harmonizes donor support for research Fund
• Unites 15 international research centers Consortium
• Rallies donors, centers and partners, for the first time, around a common approach
Strategy and Results Framework (SRF)
• Provide the focal point for all CGIAR research

Development Outcomes
1. Reducing rural
poverty
2. Increasing food
security
3. Improving nutrition
and health
4. Sustainably
managed resources
CGIAR trends
Move towards outcomes:
• From research outputs and outcomes to development outcomes and impact
• Demand-responsive research
• Theories of change and impact pathways, with measurable indicators
• Results-based management (RBM)
• Need for research and development partnerships
Networks such as BAPNET critical for research outputs in
response to regional/national demand, and for bringing
research results to scale
CGIAR Research Program (CRP) on
Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB)
• Reorganization into flagship projects and clusters of activities
• Upstream research organized into discovery flagships and clusters
• Downstream research organized into delivery flagships and clusters
• In addition, learning and support flagship and clusters
BAPNET critical for downstream research on Foc
TR4 and BBTV, and upstream research on Musa
germplasm conservation and use
CGIAR Research Program (CRP) on
Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB)
Banana/cross-cutting clusters with close linkage to BAPNET:
• Access to Musa genetic diversity
• Improvement of Musa germplasm
• Next generation breeding
• Fusarium wilt
• BBTV
Regional networks particularly relevant for clusters
with downstream research (e.g., Musa genetic
diversity, Fusarium wilt, BBTV)
Bioversity's Strategy 2014-2024
Vision
Agricultural biodiversity nourishes
people and sustains the planet planet
Mission
Strategic objectives (1)
Four strategic objectives:
SO1 ̶ Consume: diverse and quality diets
SO2 ̶ Produce: resilient production and ecosystems services
SO3 ̶ Plant: quality planting material
SO4 ̶ Safeguard: priority agricultural biodiversity
Conservation of genetic resources as point of departure
(SO4), dissemination through effective seed systems (SO3),
for resilient livelihood systems and landscapes (SO2) and
improved nutrition (SO1).

Conclusions
Working through networks like BAPNET fully in line with CGIAR's and Bioversity's partnership strategies
CRP RTB and Bioversity's strategic objectives as framework for joint banana work with BAPNET conservation and use of Musa germplasm (SOs 3 & 4); Foc TR4 and BBTV management (SOs 1 & 2)
Move towards development outcomes and impact requires both research and development partners
Way ahead: increased pooling of human and financial resources for higher impact
