RENEW
A FP6 Integrated Project
Professor Shane Ward
Bioresources Research Centre (BRC)University College Dublin
RENEW
• classic example of how the EC FP can enable Ireland contribute to a global research project!
• DESPITE the fact that (in this case) we are “small players” in the global automotive industry
Bioresources Research Centre (BRC)University College Dublin
• We started in FP4 (Concerted Action)Contacts within the CA
EXPERIENCE – became an asset to the IP leader
•We co-ordinated a STREP in FP5
•Partner in an IP (RENEW) under FP6

electricity industries, energy research institutes & universities

• How did we get involved in RENEW?• I attended an INFORMATION MEETING in
Brussels – organised by the Commission in advance of CLOSING DATE
• I heard the VW presentation – a winner!!!• I presented VW with our potential contribution
- Biomass, English, Led a FP5• VW very interested!

Enterprise Ireland / Sustainable Energy Ireland
1) Got a travel grant to attend the meeting!
2) Now received matching funding from SEI for a shortfall in FP6 funding (an error due to AC v. FC followed by budget cuts!)
Bioresources Research Centre (BRC)University College Dublin
• The spin-offs from our involvement:• Now involved in formulating a 2nd submission
under FP6, emerging from the RENEW Partnership
PLUS • invited as a partner in another separate
submission, due to the fact that we LED a FP5 project!
Additional “softer” benefits:
• 1) Masters student placed at DC;
• 2) 2 masters students placed at TUV;
• 3) possible Masters student at Volvo;
• 4) aware of what’s happening and new opportunities! (e.g. the China factor!)

• CONTACTS and EXPERIENCE (Track Record) are essential for continued success!
• only ENGLISH speaking partner – so I’m proof reader!! – a pivotal role!!
Bioresources Research Centre (BRC)University College Dublin
To do (if you want to lead a project):• Read the CALL carefully! – your proposal /
research area must fit within the CALL• However, what’s written on paper (text of
CALL) may not reflect the reality of the emphasis in the CALL
• MUST contact / meet the key person in the COMMISSION – go to Brussels!
Bioresources Research Centre (BRC)University College Dublin
• Even if you are not the project leader, it is important to find out these details – perhaps accompany the project co-ordinator to Brussels!
• Be realistic – drop aspects that Brussels has no interest in!!
Bioresources Research Centre (BRC)University College Dublin
The project should address:
1. Relevance to the CALL
2. Potential Impact
3. S & T Excellence
4. Quality of the Partnership
5. Quality of the Management
6. Synergisms with regard to utilisation of resources
