    biocompatible prostheses, various

    diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices

    ranging from clinical equipment to micro-

    implants, common imaging equipment such

    as MRIs and EEGs, biotechnologiessuchas regenerative tissue growth, and

    pharmaceutical drugs&

    biopharmaceuticals.

    Subdisciplines withinBiomedical Engineering

    Biomedical engineering is a highly interdisciplinary field,

    influenced by (and overlapping with) various other engineering andmedical fields. This often happens with newer disciplines, as theygradually emerge in their own right after evolving from specialapplications of extant disciplines. Due to this diversity, it is typicalfor a biomedical engineer to focus on a particular subfield or groupof related subfields. There are many different taxonomicbreakdowns within BME, as well as varying views about how bestto organize them and manage any internal overlap; devoted to BMEdivides the major specialty areas as follows:

    Medical equipment is designed to aid inthe diagnosis, monitoring or treatment of

    medical conditions. These devices are

    usually designed with rigorous safetystandards. The medical equipment is

    included in the category Medical

    Technology.

    Medical Equipment

    There are several basic types:

    Diagnostic equipmentincludes medical imaging machines, usedto aid in diagnosis. Examples are ultrasound and MRI machines,PET and CT scanners, and x-ray machines.

    Therapeutic equipmentincludes infusion pumps, medical lasersand LASIK surgical machines.

    Life support equipmentis used maintaina patient's bodilyfunction. These include medical ventilators, anaestheticmachines, heart-lung machines, ECMO, and dialysis machines.

    Medical monitorsallow medical staff to measure a patient'smedical state. Monitors may measure patient vital signs and other

    parameters including ECG, EEG, blood pressure, and dissolvedgases in the blood.

    Medical laboratory equipmentautomates or helps analyze blood,urine and genes.

    Diagnostic Medical Equipment may also be used in the home for

    certain purposes, e.g. for the control of diabetes mellitus
