Introduction and Unit 1 by Frankie Nevin The CDC was called into Bangladesh to save a small village north east of Chittagong, a major port city and metropolitan area. In this small village, there are eight homes which borders a thirty foot wide river. These families live by farming on small plots of land beyond their houses. On these farms they grow vegetables and raise chickens, for their eggs, in pens around the house . Just beyond their farms is a marshy jungle filled with thousands of creatures, birds and insects where they occasionally hunt for large creatures to add protein to their diet. Recently, many members of this small village have fallen ill and died. Each victim suffered from similar symptoms prior to death including fever, watery stool, vomiting and headaches. We need to know the contents of the stool, the contents of their stomach (whether something they ate was infected), water samples and blood samples. A living thing must be composed of cells that are organized. They must be able to metabolise; obtain energy, as an autotroph or a heterotroph, use that energy and dispose of it. Another necessity of life must be that it be able to grow; not just in the common sense of growing as if getting taller and/or bigger but cell division, to make more cells, and cell differentiation, the cells becoming unique. Another must have for being considered alive is being able to reproduce asexually, one cell splits into two, and sexually, two different cells combine and become the first cell of a new individual and then be able to pass on their information. A living thing must respond to stimuli, maintain homeostasis and evolve. For something to be considered a living thing, it must have some of these characteristics. Learning the difference between living and nonliving was made easier by doing the activity
