FYI
This PowerPoint presentation was specifically designed to be used with UMD Biology 1012 lab manual (2004-2005) – Exercise 6 Seed Plants – Gymnosperms and Flowering Plants
So WHY do you have to do this
Familiarize yourself with the variety of trees that are classified as gymnosperms
Learn how to use a taxonomic key Identify local gymnosperms Incorporate some random trivia into your
knowledge base This is MN and sometimes the weather is just to
yucky to actually go out to the trees, so we bring the trees to you.
Keys to keying gymnosperms
Note key traits of leaves (shape, size, etc.) Note key traits of cones (size, location,
etc.) Note key traits of bark (color, texture)
Raised leaf stem
Bases of leaves raised on stem
Bases of leaves running down the stem
Bases of leaves not running down the stem
This is typical of a spruce where the leaf grows off of a small stem
