M.S. thesis research on normative supply responses for cotton and grain sorghum in the Texas High Plains (1965-67). Ph.D. dissertation research in environmental economics/water pollution (1967-70); developed project with major professor which was funded by Office of Water Resources Research, U.S. Dept. of the Interior. One-third time appointment with the Water Resources Research Center, University of Missouri-Rolla (1970-73); research in environmental economics.

Research on world food and natural resource issues (1973-75). Specific projects included projections of world production, consumption, and trade for grains and meat; estimation of demand for meats in the world and selected countries; simulation modeling of LDC economies; monitoring of contract research on grain trade modeling; policy analysis for U. N. Law of the Sea Conference; analysis of world fertilizer markets; and analysis of impacts of world energy conditions with emphasis on world agricultural production.

Developed and organized economic research program in fibers and oil crops, Natl. Economics Division, ERS, USDA at Lubbock, TX (1975-81), with emphasis on the western U.S. Coordination/cooperation/liaison work with cotton industry and other research groups and institutions, including Texas Tech University, Texas Ag. Experiment Station, Ag. Research Service, and Ag. Marketing Service. Research projects included assessment of new technologies in cotton processing (joint with ARS, USDA), economics of hulling undelintered cottonseed, market impacts of instrument grading of cotton (joint with AMS and ARS, USDA), and work on USDA's FEDS/Typical Farms System.

Research in rangeland economics and economics of the cotton industry (1981-1995). Projects included economic analyses of brush control and other range enhancement practices, marketing/production systems in semi-arid lands, and price and weather risk analyses (substantial joint work with faculty in Range and Wildlife Mgmt. Dept.). Other projects on land values, economics of variety selection, crop yield analyses, industry structure, international competitiveness, price analysis studies on cotton, and ginning costs.

Served on and chaired various departmental, college, and university committees and task forces addressing administrative matters, 1981-2008.

Department Chairman, Agricultural and Applied Economics, Texas Tech Univ., 1997-2005. Responsible for overall educational and research programs. Provided leadership for programs and administrative responsibility for a department of 15 faculty, about 300 students, and annual budgets of over $3.0 million. Directed the Cotton Economics Research program since its inception at Texas Tech and became Director of the Cotton Economics Research Institute on its foundation in 1997 (served to retirement in 2008).
