Entry slip: What is a corrective action?

Lesson 5.3 Homeostasis

I. Terms:

a.Homeostasis (p772):

i. The body’s maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment (i.e. water content, O2 level, temperature, etc..)

II. Homeostatic Mechanisms:

a.There are limited conditions under which the body will work. Example: if there is not enough O2, the body’s cells will die. Likewise, there are many functions that the body performs to maintain the desired internal environment:

i. Control of Breathing

ii. Control of Heart Rate

iii. Transportation of nutrients, wastes, gases, water, temperature, defence mechanisms

iv. Excretion of harmful wastes

v. Maintain proper water and mineral balance

vi. Has immunity mechanisms

vii. Various functions performed by liver

viii. Various functions of lymphatic system

III. Youtube search:

IV. Classwork-Poster Information:

a.The class will be divided up and each group will be assigned a homeostasis topic. Each group must:

i. Describe what internal condition the body needs.

ii. Describe what functions help the body maintain homeostasis

b.This will be a two-day assignment with work on the posters today as well as the first half of tomorrow, with presentations tomorrow.

V.Homework:

a.None.
